mine is on the floor (carpet) under my desk - no problem moving my hand down six inches to reach the CD drive - but i was worried i might back into it with my chair if i left the drive open for some reason.... My "desk" is actually a 42" x 64" dining room table - but with the two monitors, a printer, two firewire drives, the router, and cable modem on the desk (not to mention keyboard and mouse) there's no room for the box (which is truly beautiful and should be mounted in the middle of the living room on a aluminum pedestal). i did start with it on the table - but its just too massive.

I open up my computers (if possible) and air can them to get dust out of there once a month. I have been told that is exsessive, but i have seen cards go bad cause of shorts due to dust and other crap that gets in. This MP case is pretty tight though, so i dont see it being a problem on the floor. Unless you have pets - or never clean - it shouldnt matter where you put it as long as theres good airflow around it. I'd worry about putting it in a cabinet or other enclosure for that reason. I think the worst thing is smoking - if you smoke near your box you should get a small fan to blow the smoke away from it - i have wokred on smokers machines before and i have found them to be far dirtier inside (and have more problems) then non-smokers boxes.

also - i cant even tell its running its so quiet - it has freaked me out once or twice, as i am used to the loud fans of my last POS dell.

In the bathroom, kind of behind the toilet. Long story...

You can't leave us dangling like that. Spill it!

Mine is on my desk. I have ceramic floors so I don't want it to scratch up. The fan noise isn't welcomed but it's a worthy sacrifice.

Under an Ikea Galant Desk and love the placement. Keeps it off the floor and easy reach for SuperDrive and front ports on the machine.

are you all tidying your desks for the photo or are they always that clean!

I'd love to be able to keep my desk that clean

sits on a shelf built in under my desk. it gets a little dusty, but i feel better about vacuuming nearby than i would if it were on the floor

Under the desk

Just under the desk, off the floor to improve circulation and to save it from static off the carpet. Runs very quiet and very cool

Yeah, all looks a bit un-natural to me ;)

After all, they are work machines - where do all you people keep your paperwork? I've got a weeks work just trying to find my desk to put mine onto :p

Mine sits on top of my desk about 8 inches to the right of my Dell 30" monitor. I didn't want people to get the wrong assumption as to what I'm running if I only have the Dell 30" openly visible. :p

Fan noise or not?

I just ordered a 2.8 Octo with the 8800GT card (will add lotsa RAM and three more HDs when I get the machine). I wanted this MP because of three things: Expandability, raw power, and because I read reviews saying the MP is very quiet.

But then this very thread gave me the following information:

Intranut:
Runs very quiet and very cool

supercooled:
The fan noise isn't welcomed but it's a worthy sacrifice.

crm114:
i cant even tell its running its so quiet

badlydrawn:
couldn't stand the fan noise/hdd chatter

Spikeanator6982:
Ya my only worry as to the loudness was the superdrives in it, wow..I thought they could be a bit quieter.

khosna:
It isn't very loud except when the superdrive is active -- then it sounds like a jet taxiing fro a take-off.

pprior:
it's too loud to have up on the desk

JesterJJZ:
I thought my MP was broken because it was so quiet.

I guess "quiet" sometimes can be a subjective term, but with so many contradictory comments, I'm now a bit confused

Sorry to go off-topic like this...

Another vote for it being quiet here...

that said, as for others' comments, it looks like when the superdrive spins up it gets loud. Otherwise, it's quiet.

Welcome to the "pro" family!

Having used a mac pro at work for sometime, I'm used to a really loud mac. Here at work its under my desk - which reduces the noise quite a bit, but it still gets loud. I don't have a desk at home big enough for my mac to fit properly underneath yet, but I was pleasantly surprised at how silent mine is.

I've had a loud ass computer at home for sometime now, so loud, that I had two pillows (one on either side) to dampen the noise so I could sleep with it still on, and not have to use sound-canceling headphones (I like to hear when my phone rings or my girlfriend is talking to me).

I bought this with the expectation that it too would be ridiculously loud, but it has been silent. Even when running graphics intensive games, the thing doesn't even get remotely loud. However, once I start crunching video or reading/writing to a DVD, the beast roars its noise. Its nice that it isn't doing it as much as I expected though - quietest machine I've ever owned.

All I can hear right now is the hard drives whirring. If I'm doing something video-intensive I'll hear the video card fan spin up, but that barely increases the noise level. Only time I do really hear it is when a CD is spinning up.

When I get mine, it's going to go right on the desk where you see the MacBook. Right between the Cinema Display and the laser printer. I can't picture spending $3000 dollars on a computer and just leaving it on the floor to get hit with Hot Wheels and Power Rangers. (I have kids.) I figure too, it won't get as dusty if it's up on the desk, and I can also marvel in its wonder if it's right in front of my face.

I keep mine under my desk. I tied the wires and tucked it behind my bose companion subwoofer.

[snip]

Wow! Is that an Apple mouse pad, or a MacBook Air! Just kidding, I know it's an Air. PS, where do you keep the keyboard? A Wireless in the desk drawer?

mac caddy

I keep mine under my desk in a Mac Caddy, it is a piece of 3/4 plywood cut
out for the tower with casters on the bottom. It is a direct copy of one sold
on G5 users group on the web.

The Mac Pro that arrived in February sits to the right of my desk. Sitting to the right of it is my PowerMac G5. Sitting to the right of that is a Tyan dual AMD 2800+ system in a Lian Li chassis.

The only time of the year that I've heard the PowerMac G5 fans is in September and October. I'll probably have to wait until then to find out if the Mac Pro is quieter.

If I want to hear fan noise, I just need to power-up the Tyan system. This weekend will, most likely, be the last time that I hear its fans after converting its Windows XP and openSUSE system disks to virtual systems that will run on the Mac Pro.
