Quick question - regarding the PC benchmarking of Core i7 chips to date - how valid is it to assume that the performance of the chips will cross over into a hypothetical future release Mac that had i7 (and the board, memory etc).

The performance will cross over. The Xeon X5550 (2.66GHz) which is the is most likely candidate for the Mac Pro is the practically same as the i7 920.

Have been reading some other forums and seems some people from around the US have noticed the 2008 mac pro, mac mini and 30" displays have been taken off display recently and replaced with ipods. One person asked an employee at the store where did the mac pro go and he replied with "It's out the back". I think it is safe to say the new Mac Pro will be released at Mac World Jan 5th-9th :) So over using this stupid PC to do crap since my MBP karked it

This PC gives me grief just turning it on... has a lil freeze tantrum at the loading screen and have to restart it from 'Last known good config settings' ahhahahaa

No ^_^, its saying "during christmas we sell a lot lot of Ipod sor we need more room in the store, something we sell less is PRO COMPRUTER that cost 3000$ so we took mac pro in the back to have more room for IPODS... during christmas..."
^_^

only my opinion....
Mac Pro might be ANNOUNCED in Janury.... not Shipped...

It seems unlikely that there will be new Mac Pros before early March so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

That sounds more like bad hardware than anything else. Healthy windows computers don't freeze often. To be honest, my G4 gets the infinite beach ball much more often.

How do you reckon? DELL or HP have alluded to such a release schedule?

Apple have launched Mac Pros six weeks and eight weeks after Xeons were released in the past.

Intel said production would start on Xeons in January. No release date has been set but the rumoured release date was February the 9th. The current thinking is that now the date will be pushed to the end of March so they still get a Q1 release. So the earliest we are likely to see them is March, but it is more likely it will be June and WWDC.

I was in a store this weekend in MA and noticed the same thing. It didn't jump out at me but I glanced around and the Mac Pro wasn't in it's usual spot or anywhere else. I wasn't really looking for the mini so I can't say anything about that.

The Mac Pro isn't exactly Apples' cash cow. Anyone who wants one knows about it and won't need to be wowed by some kid in an Apple shirt.

I'm about to format this PC hopefully I will get some better use out of it after I am finished setting it back up again. I was really hoping for the Macworld January for the new Mac Pros I dunno if I can wait till March because of work related issues. I am going to wait till macworld and if they don't release it there I will just buy the 2008 mac pro :)

Ooh... really bad decision, though.

Wow. When I first made the WWDC prediction, I seriously thought it was right on the late end. But now WWDC seems to be close if not the actual announcement/release date.

I'm thinking we'll have a fairly substantial update this time.

Ok, I have read these threads to exhaustion.

My main issue is this: I do graphic design. This includes daily creation of small web graphics, but on a larger scale I produce an entire 150 page magazine each month. Obviously I am using Photoshop and InDesign, with the occasional Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc thrown in.

Will I see a major performance difference with the new models coming out (presumably) sometime early next year? Or will any gains be negligible over the refurb Pro for $2300 on the Apple site?

I have to admit I have been using macs for the better part of a decade now, and currently use a one-year-old MBP 17". I am not very well versed when it comes to all the different specs available on the Mac Pro. The laptop has served my needs to this point, but I really think with the large amount of data I am pushing with the magazine, the Mac Pro would serve me better.

Can anyone give me their thoughts?

Thanks!

I think you would be fine with the current Mac Pro. You are using applications that tend to be waiting for user input rather than the processor so I wouldn't wait for some extra speed.

Get the refurb. I don´t see much use for newly gained CPU Power other than HD editing / encoding, or professional number crunching / science.
