LOL its a partial screen shot... and (2) 27" monitors... still about $1500 less then my MacPro. Its really really fast, the one i built with the nvidia 680 is even better....

Okay.. Makes sense. I have the Mid-2011 27" iMac right now and want to get the 27" Thunderbolt Display but I keep putting it off for some reason. :p

Me too. Far better to be prepared to be disappointed with the possibility of being pleasantly surprised.

Still think it's too soon and any update or replacement for the Mac Pro will come later this year.

I'm not too sure why people think it won't come until later this year. My guess is that apple can keep their progress on mac pro secret in a way they simply can't with the OS system or IOS devices. Mostly because the amount of people who are interested in knowing what apple is going to do next with that line is fairly limited, and it's not like an iphone where they need to take them out into public to test them.

But then again, I thought it was going to come out last year so... :(

Finally this will put an end to the constant whining on every thread.

And an end to condescending comments like yours. Many people rely on the Mac Pro for their business and their livelihood. I don't think it's "whining" to complain that Apple have not upgraded it for over 3 years, leaving many users wondering whether or not they would kill the product.

We have to make investment decisions about the future and spend thousands of pounds/dollars on software. We need to know whether or not to continue investing in Mac based software for the Pro or whether to simply jump ship before they kill it.

Please go back to your bedroom and play with your iPod while the adults talk.

Really?

Is that why HP & Dell are nearly bankrupt?

----------

I didn't know you could find a Xeon workstation from Dell & HP for cheaper than Apple?

News to me.

Nowadays people migrating to Apple to buy the iPhone, iPad, maybe a few iPod Touch and Macbook at most.

Only a very select few get in line at Apple Store and order a MacPro.

If Apple only sell MacPro, or iPod Classic it'd be nearly bankrupt too.

I don't think it's hard to understand?

Don't worry, it isn't.

ok, it should be fun for geeks, that's for sure

If they do release a Pro computer, it most likely will be Extreme, considering how powerful even the Mini is now.

I love this stuff :D

This feels like when we nerds were waiting for The Phantom Menace to come out, only to have our dreams shattered.

If they don't announce a MP, I'll probably choose to go elsewhere. I've never bought an Apple, so I find the secrecy on a high end product somewhat silly. That's just the way they do things, so whatever, but I know I would need to budget big time for an expensive machine.

If the don't announce anything, I'll be very disappointed, but not surprised one bit. They don't come off as a company concerned about the Pro level user and that's understandable considering the money they make in other areas.

At the end of the day, I'm the customer. I want an expandable/updatable machine. If they don't want to provide that, I can go elsewhere with my money.

I'm not opposed to building one, I'm just apprehensive due to potential stability issues if you don't get everything just right. Some people may be happy with something that only crashes once a week but not me. Waiting to see what WWDC presents before I spend any time designing the "perfect" Hackintosh.

I can't even remember the last time I restarted my Mac Pro that wasn't for a software update that required it or a hardware installation. OS X on genuine hardware is incredibly stable. Heck, I've got an OS X server running with an uptime of 209 days. I've heard less good things about hackintoshes.

Now, if the Mac Pro was ever discontinued, I'd go hackintosh all the way, because I'm not giving up OS X.

I think that this is a rare case where Apple would be good with announcing an update to an existing product line that won't ship for a while.

I think that August is about the earliest a new Mac Pro could ship if they are going to use the Ivy Bridge E5 Xeon processors.

An announcement at WWDC and a ship date of August-September might be better than silence.

I agree wholeheartedly... tell me something, please, if for no other reason that to reduce my angst and disappointment levels. I'm frustrated.

Note... I said frustrated. Not whining. Just not happy either.

If I was Apple, I would dispense with all 3 1/2 inch drive bays and replace them with 2 1/2 inch SATA III bays, add four standard Apple flash memory module sockets, while still providing 1000W power supply and multiple 16X PCIe III slots for GPU's. That would bring the package down to a 3U rack size or possibly even a 2U with current Xeon's, and would meet the needs of almost any pro.

Having a lot of fast, onboard hard disk storage is an anachronism in a world of SSD. Better alternatives exist outside the box.

Biggest issue is compatible pro graphics cards, but mid and high range Quadro Kepler models are already or soon will be available from Nvidia for the Mac, and AMD has some excellent pro cards as well, though few if any are Mac compatible.

the real problem

Processor availability isn't the issue. There are plenty of Xeon chips to go around. The Xeon line isn't modified as frequently as other Intel chips, but it doesn't have to be.

The real problem is Apple's lack of willingness to build products that people want. There is a long history of "their way or the highway". When it comes to product design, Apple thinks they know better than everyone else what people want - and that means the people themselves ("no you don't want that, you want this").

While they've had great success in building new categories of devices that other people never imagined (iPod, iPhone, iPad anyone?), I still don't understand why they can't do that cool stuff AND build some items that their customers have been asking for (like a real desktop computer).

Professional customers have been clamoring for a new Mac Pro level machine for several years now. Building a completely redesigned machine could take some time, but building a modified unit isn't that hard. PC companies crank out modified towers every time you sneeze.

It isn't always about a processor bump. How about incrementally refining the internals and the physical size of the Mac Pro once per year? How about basics such as more/faster SATA busses, adding Thunderbolt, more internal disk storage? How about taking the same internals, re-orienting them and making a case that is 2U in height and shipping it with optional rack mount handles?

At this point I seriously question Apple's commitment to any professional market. It seems they have completely embraced the consumer space to the detriment of all else. Problem is, that is not a successful long term strategy. Why would any organization of size embrace Apple on the desktop or in mobile if Apple provides no back-end support systems? I know many organizations who have realized this fact and have jumped ship. History repeats itself, and I fear Apple will have to learn their 1990's lesson again.

i can see it now,

lights come up at WWDC,

Tim Cook walks out on stage

a silhouette of a Mac Pro on the screen behind him,

He turns to the crowd, welcomes them to WWDC

The Silhouette is then illuminated as a MacPro shaped gravestone and Tim then shouts "The Mac Pro is DEAD, get over it people and buy an iMac instead"

THen he goes on to show case Windows 8 for iOS and its new "flat" design .

Is it me, or since SJ died, and Jonny Ive has had more say in stuff, has apples product line got prettier, but less functional for anyone except the no-nothing on the street ?

just my opinion, your millage may vary

----------

And 50% less useful.

And 100% less upgradable, it wouldnt surprise me for them to introduce an iMac-Pro to replace the MacPro line.. completely missing the point of the need of a macpro line in the first place.

But thats typical apple, we tell them what we want, they produce what they say we want, and we buy the stuff anyways , as i sit here with my MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhone , iPad and iPad Mini , its not like there not getting money out of me anyway

It's just like Windows users telling Microsoft what they want in Windows 8. Then Microsoft ignores them builds goofball features.

Maybe intel gave it to them early ? I seem to recall this happening once in the past already.

They launched 4 weeks before Dell, HP etc one time. 3 months is a bit of a push. Especially when you consider other companies will be NDA'd until September.
