Ahhh.... this marks the official countdown to the kvetching. 11 days to go and counting.

Personally, I can't wait for a smaller footprint, optical-driveless machine. That's my guess at what we'll see & why the Mac Mini no longer has discrete video. I DO remember the day when having dual optical drives was a must, but even a single is almost overkill now. A new Cinema Display is a must too for so many obvious reason, or Apple should just get out of the display business like they exited printers.

Yes they are.

16-cores, 512GB RAM support, PCI-E 3.0 with every graphics card working and the option for SLI or Crossfire, 3-5 year on site warranty coverage. PC workstations are superior in hardware performance and support to what you get with a Mac Pro. Not to mention Dell are considerably cheaper. Granted build quality might not be as great, but I'd take that lacking to get work done 40% faster.

Actually, this is one area that I'm really annoyed at Apple about. Why can't I just buy the "latest super cool gee wizbang" graphics card, and drop it in my machine, for the same price the other 80% of the market buys it for? Yes, yes, I know you can flash the ROMs, but that's beside the point.

Btw way, Dell T7600 with dual Xeon E5-2650 (Eight Core, 2.0GHz), 64GB ram, dual 2GB NVIDIA Quadro 4000 video cards prices out to $6,700 on their store. The current "state of the art" MacPro dual 6 core, 64gb ram, and the antique dual 1GB ATI 5770 prices out to $6000.

This gets my vote. Kill the damn thing already. It was a beautiful machine way back in the 1800s when it was first released, but it's done. Apple can pack just as much power into something a lot smaller and less bulky. I'd love to see them merge the Mac Mini and Mac Pro lines into a series of machines going from low-end to high. The iMac is a great machine but it would be great to give some real choice in the headless Mac line-up for once. No reason to make it a choice between small and underpowered or huge and expensive.

As long as that new system has the expandibility necessary for a "pro" system.

Anything without real graphics cards is DOA.

"Kill It"

Or Kill it....

Really? What would all of the studios, professional designers, and makers of animated films use, Microsoft machines???

I think some people here are confusing the Mac Pro with the iMac.

I would like for them to bring back a larger laptop since I do a lot of work away from my home machines and being a photographer I didn't mind putting a 17" in my bag. This movement to only Pads does not come near offering me the applications I need for post-processing I need to do on the spot to upload to clients ASAP. My 15" Mac Book Pro has served me well but I could use a bump.

Agreed!!!!!!

That is the problem with Apple. I loved the way I could do that with my old Dell machines. Practically a DIY in the end but it had everything I wanted.

I know it's sarcasm, but I think they won't change the body at all. Just internals :)

I know people are happy with the body, after all, who really moves the thing a whole lot, other than for the occasional dust removal? ;) I wouldn't mind seeing the handles drop down on the top, I bang my knees into it a lot ;)

This time, MAC PRO update is about form factor and features such as USB3.0, Thunderbolt, and better graphics card.

CPU performance hasn't improved much in the past few years. The MAC PRO can be shipped with Sandy-Bridge-E and then replaced by Ivy-Bridge-E. Remember when the new MBA came out, it was Core 2 Duo + Geforce 9400

Earlier this month, we reported that Apple resellers were seeing dwindling numbers of MacBook Airs, and it appears that many outlets are also experiencing low supplies of Apple's Mac Pro.

According to MacTrast, the entry level quad-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro is backordered or out of stock at a number of online stores, including MacMall, B&H Photo, CDW, PowerMax, Adorama, and J&R Electronics.

Popular Apple reseller Amazon.com has just nine of the low end Mac Pros in stock, and other retailers like MicroCenter, Frys, and Best Buy also have limited supplies.

Dwindling product supplies at third-party Apple retailers is often an indication that a refresh is imminent and the Mac Pro may be a prime candidate for an update announcement at WWDC in June, as it has been more than 1,000 days since the product last saw a significant release.

The Mac Pro received a slight update at WWDC last year, which included a small processor bump. Many Apple customers were dissatisfied with the update, but an Apple spokesman later confirmed that a new Mac Pro would be introduced in 2013.

One issue for Apple is likely to be processor availability, as the company has traditionally used high-end Xeon chips from Intel in the Mac Pro. The next-generation Xeon chips, Ivy Bridge-E, are not expected until around September of this year, a date far enough off that it would be difficult for Apple to announce a new Ivy Bridge-E Mac Pro at WWDC but close enough that Apple would have a difficult time justifying use of the current Sandy Bridge-E chips that have already been on the market for quite some time.

I really hope they reveal it at WWDC. As I've stated before I cannot wait until late summer or fall to upgrade my desktop and I will build a Windows box if need be. I'd much prefer the Mac Pro, though, so this is very hopeful.

It's also been hard for me to imagine a later summer or fall MP release for various reasons: It can't currently be sold in Europe for some time now & new graphics cards from Nvidia & ATI that, from what I understand can't reach their full potential on current MP hardware (correct me if I'm wrong on that).

Perhaps you missed the part if the article that said Intel is coming out with its new high end processor in September. That might put
Apple in a pickle.

I didn't know you could find a Xeon workstation from Dell & HP for cheaper than Apple?

News to me.
If that is news to you, you are probably living under a rock. You can easily get even tower servers with better specs from Dell than a Mac Pro. But that´s no wonder, since Dell is way faster is bringing out the latest technology, while Apple didn´t feel the need for it. Not even talking about all the pro options to choose from and the ability to tweak the system exactly as you like. I did exactly that yesterday and was amazed what kind of performance I can get under $3000.

However, a Mac Pro is not going to go away. Even with Apple´s focus on mobility, there is NO replacement for a beefy powerhouse that serves your home. Not even talking about storage needs.

I'm not a "Pro" but even I wouldn't pony up for a current MP. I can't see spending an insane amount of money on something that has no USB3.0, no Thunderbolt, etc. Sure, you could opt to install some fiber HBAs ($$$) to connect to SAN ($$$$), etc but that just drives up the cost even more.

As for "Pros" not caring about USB3, really? 5Gb/s isn't worthwhile? Yeah, man, definitely not much of an upgrade over USB2 or FW800...

Since we're dreaming and speculating, here's what I'd like to see...

Minitower with at least 2xUSB3 and 2xThunderbolt, 3-4 PCIe 3.0 expansion slots, no ODD, 4 HDD bays, 8 DIMM slots, and upgradeable video cards with SLI/CrossFire support.

I'd ask for a more reasonable price, but to get a dual socket system with 8-12 cores takes Xeon CPUs and that's where a lot of the extra cost comes from.

I just want something that can be upgraded, has current connectivity options and doesn't come with an attached display. If I wanted to be stuck with a built-in display and lower-end GPUs then I'd buy an iMac. Sure, they're better than the MBP GPU but not enough better to be worth buying a whole new system that can't be upgraded.

I'd love to see some sort of clustering solution as well, maybe cut the MacPro down to a single hex-core i7 with an attractive price and the ability to cluster multiple together. Three hex-core i7 MPs clustered for a little more money than a single, loaded, 12-core current MP? Yes, please!

laugh so much if they kill the mac pro and instead release an iMac with a dvd drive and call it iMac Server
i feel sorry for video editors.
music people like myself aren't as needy

Well this music person certainly is.

;) j/k.... or maybe...

Some dude was selling a machine similar to this on ebay for $1400, it was a cracking deal as the 5780 is $400 a piece - but his was quadcore I think. Are you the same dude, I was tempted as I need to upgrade my 2012 mini for FCPX although it handles 1000 clip events just fine if you know what you're doing!

Graphics Cards

But even with a new mac pro the highest end graphics cards never have OSX drivers and cost at least 50%!
GTX680 nope, they have a 690 now but now apple support.
AMD is same.

Forget the Xeon chips and go with Haswell as most MP users are video artists. The imbedded Intel 5200HD with QuickSync is good enough. Lower the price to capture the entire market, for the difference in $ between Xeon and Quad is a about $600.

Well go to the HP page and see the machine alot of the edit houses are using, it's $10k + I think. The lower end machines are probably cheaper than the base Pro but the higher ones are a lot more expensive but have better performance.

Looking forward to see exactly how controversial this update is going to be.
—And to hear Apples take on the Pro market and what it needs.

My problem w/ the current case is that it's become a throwback to when desktops needed to be huge. Dual optical drives aren't needed anymore. Heck, single optical drive isn't really needed, but maybe put in a slim drive as a transition. Deleting that space give Apple lots more options to slim it down. It'll still be large b/c Apple can't drop PCI slots, but at least improve the footprint.
