Ah the good old days... I wish I had appreciated them more. That's when Mac and OS X was the apple of Apple's and SJ's eye...

Yeah but that was before Apple realised they could make 'Killer Profits' with iToys.... Still look at the Mac, it's still awesome and totally stomps all over Vistas ass, so so with Windows 7. But it is much easier to use then Windows 7 IMO :D

I don't have time for the paperwork for the second mortgage not to mention the extra cooling the house will require with that heat-box around.
Heat-box??? Are you out of your mind?
2008 Mac Pros are probably the coolest running Macs ever built!!!
Even when rendering HD video I can't hardly ever push my 2 x 2.8 GHz over 40°C .

What this means for someone like myself is I am VERY dependent upon new hardware. Since Apple has left the Mac Pro behind with very late product cycles it makes it impossible for me to continue their support. The Macs I have now are relegated to server status for part of my render farm. At this time I have gone back to building my own custom computers and most likely will never go back. For family and others that do not work with programs like this, I would certainly recommend a Mac. But if you are really into 3D art design, then the choice is clear in my opinion.

You sir have hit the nail on the head. The target market for the Mac Pro is creative pros who require heavy processing power, but Apple has let this market slip away with such time between updates and also the huge cost associated with upgrading the components to be suitable for such work. For example the hugely expensive but not very effective RAID card, or the massive ramp in price if you want more than 8Gb of RAM to actually be ABLE to utilise the power of those lovely dual processors.
I don't know who does Apple's accounts but they got it wrong with the Mac Pro, and I doubt unless there is a significant price drop that many people who left will come back to the Mac, and doubt that many who need to upgrade will choose Apple hardware in the future. Which is a shame, because the Mac Pro has all the potential in the world, if only Apple would actually support it and its target market. Kind of a no-brainier, one would think.

Why are some PRO'S say they are PRO users.

You make music, video etc. like a PRO?
Then you also know that there are PCI-e cards that you might want.
Like Universal Audio, TC Electronics, Solid State Logic and many many others.
Or what about the power of more USB & FW slots with PCI-e?
Or the many fast hard drives PRO user need for the tasks they're working on?

Good luck sticking all that in your IMac ;)

Now I'm not saying the IMac can't be used in a PRO environment but there are many many times PRO users need more flexibility to configure there needs.

BTW. I would love to see a smaller version of the MacPro next his bigger brother.

I think the later the update the more likely there will be USB 3.0. If the update is July 27th I don't think there will be USB 3.0. Why? Wouldn't Apple have released USB 3.0 with the new Mac Mini from last month if it were making the transition?

As for Blu-Ray. Never. There will never be native Blu-Ray support or a Blu-Ray drive in a Mac. I wish Apple would but clearly they've gone all Flash on Blu-Ray.

mmmm...good point on the USB 3.0 thing.

me personaly i think that since they are about to update the imac also, they just might add USB3.0 in the MacPro and not the imac, just to keep some distance between the two machines that are fairly close when it comes to performance. if they are to charge 2000$ more for a MacPro than just another case design and slightly better CPU isn't going to justify the price difference.

BlueRay : this has passed the revue thousands of times, and lets not go there again. To all you guys expecting BlueRay, its not going to happen, point blank! there's pages of blue ray discussions on here so don't mess up this thread by wanking about how you so hope to get blue ray and why Apple should add blue ray/why not....

New mac pro update eh? I predict:

6 core Xeon processor
6 gigs of ram
1tb harddrive
Geforce 460GTX (PLEASE DO THIS APPLE)
New case redesign to make it more unibody
Completely redesign of the insides

At the same time introduction of new 27 inch Cinema display and discontinuation of the old 30 inch cinema display.

Built that spec computer with six core non-Xeon i7 & BD burner over at New Egg for $1,700.
If your prediction of the new base Mac Pro is right,
will the price be less than $2,500 for the current base model?
Minus the BD burner of course. :apple:

It's not BlueRay. Your attempt to prohibit discussion of BD in Macs is a bag of hurt.
If you don't want to talk about it, everybody else will be better off.
Your credibilty is gone. Stay tuned.

Lol Was this supposed to be a tongue in cheek play on words? This is exactly what Steve Jobs stated about Blu-Ray, especially the "bag of hurt". I love.

I hope they replace the case, IMO it's fugly!! It's what some people would call 'not a bad old hector' note the OLD. It looks so outdated next to the rest of the range.
They can easily make it unibody design, but not as in a single block of aluminium (By the way, they COULD do this and recycle ALL the cuttings!) but they could make in on the unibody principles. Strong, clever machining, clever design. Meh it the Pro just looks old. Nothing like a new case to sell the computer either ;) eye candy FTW.

Yeah, because when I'm kicking out a show a week, working 14 hours a day, my main concern is that the Mac Pro underneath my desk looks really cool.

Will you guys STOP asking about Blu-Ray?! Nobody uses it anymore. The only things that come out on it are Disney stuff and a few things like Avatar. It's overpriced and overrated. It uses high compression H.264 to achieve stunning, crystal clear ragged edges in HIGH DEFINITION (being sarcastic) :p.

A DVD player with upscaler does the job for a lot less $$$ and no loading time.

Dude, you've been watching too many movies on your cell phone. And you've obviously got no experience with HD and no knowledge on this topic.

But, for the sake of education, Blu-Ray isn't just about stunning video. It's about stunning Audio. Are you upscaling your audio, too?

Ladies and gentleman...

This rumor is weak if stores are stocked.

Originally posted by ValSalva:
My local West Hartford, CT store shows the single quad available but the dual processor Mac Pro unavailable.

All four connecticut stores show that both are available for me. are you sure?

I've yet to see a store with Mac Pros unavailable at "reserve and pickup". Unless a bunch of people start posting that they are seeing "unavailable" mac pros, it would seem that there is no truth to this rumor.

So... is anyone having luck or is this rumor dead?

You are joking, right? This thread has tons of reports of unavailable all over the country.

to all you must have BlueRay people, buy a PC BlueRay drive put it in the second optical drive slot, and use bootcamp with windows when you want to watch a BlueRay disk it's that simple.

Or even better yet, buy a standalone BlueRay player and use it with a TV. it's not like a MacPro is all that portable.

You don't need bootcamp. There are native solutions.

Actually I'm DEAD serious. I've checked them all. The three New York stores mentioned in this article all have both MPs available. The other stores mentioned in these comments are all available.

Cmaier, I really want to believe but this whole article is worthless if these same stores now have stock. am i missing something?

If they have them today then that's new since yesterday

This never had anything to do with the online store.

I love it. :D

So, would that be the iPro?

Ahh well, the iMac and the Mac Pro are now forged together, so it would be more logical to call it the MacPadPod!

It also doubles up as an iPad by simply removing the stand and placing the unit on your lap. The kids will love it, apparently... :D

You are right, the Westfarms store Mac Pro availability has changed. Yesterday only the quad was available. Both are now available today. Maybe this was a computer glitch or preparation for the Mac Pro no longer being sold in Apple retail stores soon. Seems like another non-story about the Mac Pro :(
