You are kidding right? right?
No I am not. The i7's in the iMac have a higher geekbench than the base MP, and approach the 8 core MP. It was on the front page back in november.
The i7 iMac is faster then the base Mac Pro. The base Mac Pro uses a quad-core 2.66 GHz Xeon CPU. The i7 iMac is a quad-core 2.8GHz i7 CPU. The reviews and benchmarks have all shown the i7 iMac is faster.
Thanks

970 and 980X could end up in the single socket Mac Pro, but I seriously doubt it, as Apple will be using Xeon's.

By the way : 970 will only launch in Q3, only 980X (6 core extreme edition, with X for extremely expensive) will launch in March.

The new parts in the lineup that are known at the moment :

* Core i7 980X "Gulftown": six-core, LGA-1366, 3.33 GHz (turbo: 3.60 GHz), March 16
* Core i7 970 "Bloomfield/Gultown?": quad-core or six-core (almost confirmed now), LGA-1366, 3.33 GHz (turbo: 3.46 GHz), Q3, 2010
* Core i7 930 "Bloomfield": quad-core, LGA-1366, 2.80 GHz (turbo: 3.06 GHz), February 28
* Core i7 880 "Lynnfield": quad-core, LGA-1156, 3.06 GHz (turbo: 3.73 GHz), Q2, 2010
* Core i5 680 "Clarkdale": dual-core, LGA-1156, 3.60 GHz (turbo: 3.80 GHz), Mid-May
* Core i3 550 "Clarkdale": dual-core, LGA-1156, 3.20 GHz, Q2, 2010
* Pentium E6700 "Wolfdale-2M": dual-core, LGA-775, 3.43 GHz, Q2, 2010

So your logic is that the brand new i7 is faster than the old dated Xeon therefor the new 6core i7 will logically be faster than the new 6core xeon?

Wow man, time to go redo logic 101.

A Nehalem based core is still a Nehalem based core.

There are plenty of Lynnfield vs. Bloomfield reviews to look at.

I've been looking forward to MP rumors since I'm currently in the market for one, but I'm hoping they look more promising than last year's models (price/value wise).

What's funny is that my dual G5 that I bought in 2003 still runs like a champ and does everything I need it to do, but it won't run Snow Leopard and other intel-only apps, so I'm losing out on new features/software and have no choice but to upgrade.

Are you in the wrong thread?
Steve already discussed blu-ray (It won't happen this year)
Do I need to report you?

Only if you want to make yourself look foolish. :D

You've only just joined this forum, so relax dude!

If you still need a clue: I was kidding. And sort of making a point.

One thing that bothers me in this age of incredibly cheap RAM is that ECC is still considered a "luxury" feature.

Because you know, only professionals are hurt when their data is corrupted.

Thank you Intel, this is your fault.

Oh yeah and FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! GIVE US DEVELOPERS NEW CINEMA DISPLAYS!!!!! :)

24" MODEL DOES NOT WORK WELL WITH A MAC PRO, NOT TO MENTION IT'S NOT EVEN DESIGNED FOR IT. :mad::rolleyes:

I could not agreed more. I am really looking for a 30" or larger display.

I Won't look foolish actually :D

Just joining doesn't imply anything :cool:

Made your point now move on.... nothing to see here :p

And like I said to the person defending you. Claiming the new 6core i7 will be faster than the new 6core xeon based on benchmarks from the OLD xeon processor and the NEW i7 is just a moronic assumption. That Xeon is dated and should be beaten by the i7.

Do we need to report YOU to the stupid police?

Seriously, who threatens to report someone?!? Furthermore, who threatens to report someone based on some incredibly obvious irony that flew right over their heads?

Lets just report everybody??, you, me, steve, john, phil, peter, mickey, donald, dilbert, pointy haird boss, wally, alice, dogbert, catbert, ratbert, the milk man, obama, bush,

I wasn't even talking to you and besides any report anyone does is Arbitrary :rolleyes:

.................

In other news, The 6 cores are going to be impressive hopefully, with some new ACDs

There will likely be absolutely no differences on the die themselves apart from support for ECC and multiple CPU arrangements. Arguing about which chips Apple will use in the new boxes is pointless, partly because of the impossibility of a DP config with consumer silicon. Could they use the new i7 on the lame duck quad (soon to be hex)? Yes, but while they could use the same socket, they would have to use a different type of RAM, which would make things too confusing.

Nor was Frazzle talking to you, but you still chose to chime in with your own 2c. Why object now that the boot is on the other foot?

Back on topic, your logic of futureproofing a machine is a flawed one imo. Trying to futureproof anything in the computing world is a really bad false economy. Given the premiums charged for cutting-edge parts (especially from Intel), maxxing out a machine with the top spec components with a view to making it last 7 years would set you back somewhere in the order of around $5k at least. On top of this, you won't even begin to tap the full potential of this machine for a couple of years (unless you work in an incredibly specialised field), so you'll be paying a huge tax for performance that you won't even benefit from for a large % of the machine's working life.

Rather than spend $5k now in a monolithic purchase designed to protect you from the inevitable upgrade path, it'd make much more sense to spend $2k on a machine now, and then sell that on (or put it to use elsehwere) and spend another $2k on a new machine 3-4 years from now. Not only will that save you money in the long run, but it will ensure that you are making much more optimal use of the computing resources available to you during your time of ownership.

Most people have the mindset that they will change the machine every year or two. Like you, I'll keep and know that my Mac Pro will last until the next futuristic/startrek OS X upgrade.

Yeah but I bought my PowerMac G5 Dual Core 2.0 with the last versions of Tiger on it, brand new and I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard on that machine...

Snow Leopard isn't THAT futuristic of an upgrade compared to Tiger... :rolleyes:

BTW... WANT A REVISED CASE FOR THE MAC PRO!!!!!

Good to know... about those on the 24 month-computer-buying cycles... they must be made of money. I plan on buying the top of the line and dress it up over time with Terebytes of HD space and max out the ram over time... both super drive and blu-ray, perifs out the wazzoo and a *****-load of software -- I am making an investment for the long term. This Mac is suppose to grow with the user over time.

I don't want to turn around in 2 years and upgrade again -- crazy talk. :confused:

I can see consumers doing that with an iMac or with a laptop. They're cheaper. Mac Pro equipment should last a little longer, unless you have a lot of time and money on your hands. Even then, the computers coming from Cupertino are so nice, you could wait a long time with something bought today before an upgrade. Personally, I am typing this on my Powerbook G4 17" model from 2003. I bought it just when Apple released the first 17" books -- I've bumped it to 2GB ram and 320GB HD. Runs great, even 7 years later. :D

As my grandpa used to say "Buy what you need and think about you want."

Secondly, Nehalem and Westmere are here to stay for some time in the server market. Sandybridge in 2011 is aiming for mobile and desktop parts first.
True. 6 and 8 core desktop successor to Bloomfield/Gulftown expected around Q2 2011 (don't know about DP server but I assume it's the same).

You are right that Intel will more then likely split the CPU lines into 2 markets "SandyBridge being mobile and Nahalem being server side" It's still to early to tell
The split appears to be fairly high up in the range, it looks like Westmere-EX (2P-8P) will coexist with Sandy Bridge-EX (2P/4P). They are coming only a quarter or two apart.

No camera?
No blu-ray?

This is just an oversized Mac Mini!

Does it even multitask?
:D :D :D :D

Is that like Pro-E? Last CAD (well something close) on Mac for me was formZ :)

Yes, although most consider Pro/e one of the top tier applications, and Solidworks more mid range, essential they do the same things, MCAD (mechanical computer aided design), or PLM (Product Lifecycle Management).

Either way, this is good for the mac platform.

Is it me, or did the first couple of MP revisions seem to have more value for the money?

I think the major issue with people future proofing and the cost of new machines is that users have this thing about buying a new workstation every two years or so.

You don't buy 2008 Mac Pro then compare it to the 2009 and whine about how much you'd pay for it for a slightly faster machine. The users with 1st gen Mac Pros approaching four years of age or dual and quad core G5s are the ones that should be drooling.

The faster clock speeds on the Mac Pro help those that need it. Being able to render out HD footage in half the time is worth the $6000 you'll pay for that octo or hexa core Mac Pro, especially when coming from a 5-6 year old G5.

I too pray that Apple doesn't charge us our first born child for a new Mac Pro, and I really hope Apple doesn't jack the price up or the sweeter deals, but realistically, if they did... there's always buying previous gen.

p.s. None of the Mac Pro had value for the money. Only the dual 1.42 GHz Power Mac G4 ($1499), the Cube ($1299), and the last revision Dual 2.0 GHz Power Mac G5 ($1799). Ever since these models were replaced it's been a rip off.

I think Steve is an idiot for not making a Mac Pro with an X58 + i7 combination already. It'd slot nicely in between the iMac and Mac Pro, and offer something that neither has, eg:

* X58 is a better chipset than the P55 and the "i7"s the iMac has as a high end option
* Probably cheaper. $1599 would be easy even with the fancy Mac Pro case
* No need for the ECC RAM the workstations have, thus lower prices

!! Please!

If all else since the old Power Macs were more like fancy desktops than full blown workstations, they could just call it a PowerMac i7 lol. I'd be down with that ;)

And it'd keep the snobby "Mac Pro" owners happy! We wouldn't be treading on their pride with our inferior machines!

Even previous gen hardware from Apple or PowerMax only saves you a couple hundred.

True. My whole office is ready to switch to PC if Apple keeps going this way. We love their laptops and consumer electronics, but for reasonably priced power, we are going to have to start looking elsewhere unless Apple steps up to the plate.
