Well i had a macpro 3.0ghz sold it last week to a friend....i been dealing strictly with my reliable thinkpad t61 but boy do i miss my mac.....
upon waiting last week since teh money was on my bank and no release date or rumors.i decided to invest on this little stock called rimm.

Bought in @ 82 bucks and sold 80 shares @ 114.74 so now not only do i have the money to get a bto with the latest video card (fingers crossed) i can now go after that 30" ( i hope apple updates soon).

Come on apple i am so ready to buy......Is like a never ending waiting cycle with apple and their pro lineup....

Does apple stock always go up after announcements? I was thinking of investing my Mac Pro money in apple, then selling after they announce the new mac pros and there's a mini spike in the stock.

Oddly, Apple stock tends to go down after announcements for a day or two. It doesn't always, of course, but I wouldn't recommend a short-term investment like the one you're proposing anyway; the market is too volatile and you could just as easily end up losing a lot.

Apple stock from what i have seen usually do go up with release info news etc....
I was studying rimm for a month or two before i decided to jump in.
Like nugget i do not recommend investing like i did without
proper research.... Sometimes short term can cost you more then money...
Trust me i learned the hard way a couple years ago.
Initially when i bought rimm i actually went on the negative
but i knew the price for rimm was too low it had to pick up.

But anyways thats another forum and show :)

when do you guys think a macpro release date will be announced?

count me in...

my G5 is not cutting it on 60+ minute Mpeg2 encodes. 5 hours for a 2 pass encode makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

The next 5-6 weeks are going to be LONG....

I'm on a 2.5ghz G5 with 4.5gb RAM x800 and Raptor scratch disk.

I'm filling that new mac pro up with tons of HD space and RAM. I'm really hoping Apple adds ZFS read/write in 10.5.1 or .2

This list is SO stale. Is it ever going to be updated again? I am sure that many of us are curious as to how many MR members have enlisted, and hence each of us counting manually seems silly.

Yeah I have the ABC test lab here:

A. 2GHz Dual Core G5 with 2.5 GB ram
B. 2.5GHz Quad G5 with 4 GB ram
C. 2.66GHz Quad Mac Pro with 5 GB ram

I have to concede the DC G5 is extremely weak at multitasking. But it makes a handy HDTV recorder since I can pop in and out 700 GB (net) SATA drives easily.

While the Quad G5 is perfect for everyday multi-tasking of mundane tasks, if I want to crush video, I have to quit mail - which is a core HOG and even Safari to max out all 4 cores. Even then it's no match for the Quad MP which is about twice as fast at both Toast MPEG DVD image encoding as well as Handbrake crushing from there to mp4s.

Side note: I just discovered that the new Handbrake 0.9.0 will let you continue to add jobs from multiple images while it is crushing work previously put into the queue. I'm pretty sure this capability did not exist before this version 0.9.0. This means that if you can keep crushing DVD images ahead of the Handbrake queue, you can keep Handbrake busy indefinitely. This is a huge productivity advancement in the world of mp4 creation. But without an 8 core MP, this kind of workflow can still be very slow without multiple Macs - and even so without at least 2 or 3 Quad MPs.

Things are awfully quiet regarding the Leopard Gold Master status only little more than two weeks from the drop dead Store Party release date of Friday October 26. You can cut the tension with a knife.

What's the cutoff for leopard? I was running the WWDC leopard seed on my 1ghz G4 laptop a couple of months ago.

I believe it's an 867 G4 or better. Yeah, I'm screwed with a 733 and 800 G4. That's why I'll wait for a free Leopard on the updated Mac Pro. I've got many hours of video encoding waiting to do. If no update comes out before the new year I'll get a current Mac Pro refurb and probably Leopard discs will be included once Leopard is shipping.

867 MHz G4 Is Now The Minimum System Speed For Leopard

What's the cutoff for leopard? I was running the WWDC leopard seed on my 1ghz G4 laptop a couple of months ago.
867 MHz now. At first the Leopard developer previews ran on 800 MHz systems. But recently engineers decided it runs too slow on those systems and raised the minimum to 867 MHz.

9.24.07 AppleInsider: Updated Leopard requirements to exclude 800MHz systems
Updated Leopard requirements to exclude 800MHz systems said:
Though seemingly mild, the 67MHz increase will exclude a handful of Mac system, namely the 800MHz PowerBook G4 (Titanium), 800MHz PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver), 800MHz iMac G4, 800MHz iBook G4, and 800MHz eMac.
That's a lot of systems if you ask me. Looking back at my Mac history, those systems were for sale for more than a year dating from:

800MHz PowerBook G4 (Titanium) April 29 - November 6 2002 then 867
800MHz PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver) January 28 - August 13 2002

BUT the 867 model was already out from July 18, 2001 through January 28, 2002 according to EveryMac.com's database. Is that right? Looks like a mistake there.

800MHz iMac G4 January 7, 2002 - September 8 2003 then to 1GHz
800MHz eMac August 13, 2002 - October 22, 2003 but from May 6, 2003 a 1GHz model was also available.

So the range of time that 800 MHz systems were for sale was from January 7, 2002 all the way to October 22, 2003 almost 2 years. That's knocking a lot out of the running. Oh well. That's progress. ;)

I wonder where the dual processor models fit in? Theoretically a dual 450 G4 would qualify since the OS is fully multithreaded right?

My plan though is to install it anyway by putting it in Firewire Disk Target mode and install it from another system.
Curious if that will work.

Hey Multimedia... I could have sworn that i posted my name on there to. That's:

Digital Skunk - Single chip/Dual Core 2GHz 1.5GB RAM

I am thinking about getting a 17" MBP when they get updated with the 2.8GHz processors, then getting my Mac Pro. I may spend some cash on filling my trusty G5 with more RAM and better GFX card. The longer I can keep it going the better my Mac Pro will be, unless the next Mac Pro is a must have with 8 cores across board or a lower price.

I hope the SR MBPs get replaced soon. They weren't that much better than the previous models and need the have the larger HDDs that have become available.

I haven't really been following all the hubbub about the Stoakley-Seaburg business (I barely know what it means), but I will be very curious to see what the GPU situation looks like when the Mac Pro is updated.

I'm also wondering when they are planning to change the enclosure design...the G4 design remained relatively unchanged for 5 years or so, with only a couple face lifts to the same basic chassis. The current enclosure is almost 5 years old...not that I have a problem with it, just curious.

I might be picking up a 800 MHz Quicksilver from work once Leopard ships. Imaging should be able to skirt the processor check but I'd rather not fight it since it is quite an old machine.

Mine's older still, the Digital Audio is going into it's 7th year.

All told I've thrown about $1200 in upgrades into it over the last three years (not including the display, which will pass on to the next machine), and paid $550 or so for it used. I'm happy with it but I want my next Mac to be brand spanking new. All my Macs save one have been bought used, and I'll be ready to leap to the bleeding edge this summer. :D
