Xfujinon - Several old macs, but primarily a Dell Optiplex that is slowly dying.
I don't really know much about computers, but the pattern of failure for this Dell is curious to me. I have had it for six years now, and it has (over the last year) done the following things:
1. It will no longer run iTunes. It locks up every single time.
2. It cannot use the backspace in Word 2003 anymore. I have to highlight and use the delete key specifically.
3. It will not read CDs unless they are music CDs, which ironically won't play in iTunes but will play through Windows Media.
4. Windows Media will cut off the last 10% of any visual media played, regardless of what it is. It does this every single time.
Naturally, as you may imagine, I have come very close to beating this computer with a stick many, many times. I DO have a G5 iMac, a G4 iMac, and a Cube, but I have relegated those to other tasks (servers, wife's computer, etc.). With the pain I have endured from this Dell, I feel that the only solution is to get a fully powered hulking beast of a computer so I can not worry about use for another half decade or so. This crappy Dell (256 meg RAM, 60 Gig HD, 1.8 Ghz CPU) has made it through a Bachelor's degree and most of a Master's degree... I imagine the Mac would make it through the doctorates.
I have, however, come across an article that says the FB-DIMMs won't be used anymore, will this have an effect on upcoming Mac Pros? What would the alternatives me?
