Mac Shipments Down in Q3 2019
Apparently not, or else you'd assume one of the many people whops job it is at one of the richest companies in the world could have predicted this and correct for it.

maybe we just need to wait and see for the 2020 refresh

I guess that much of decline is still acceptable to them.

Mac has been floating between 9-10 percent market share for years already.

So the market has grown, Apple has gone the opposite way....
Perhaps if they dropped the stupid high pricing, ditched 5200 rpm hard drives, chang the designs once in a while, like more then several years.. they may sell their computers! Oh and get rid of the utterly useless failed keyboard design they came up with!

Right now it seems the best computers they sell is the iPad Pro if you call it a computer, and the upcoming new Mac Pro, unless it thermal throttles too...
[automerge]1570790170[/automerge]

Thermal Throttling is the new feature in all Apple computers...
It is good for winter...NOT!

yep, that's, why i dont, feel guilty hackintoshing.
i prefer MacOS i'm more productive because of it. if they are Ok with declining sales that are projected to continue a decline i won't feel bad because ive told them what they need to do to get my money back.

I realize I'm just one person but as one person my annual Apple bill averages between $5K-10K a year through various products I'm sure that I'm not alone, they can only ignore money so long till the spreadsheet notices.

Perusing builds over the years, it seems to have actually gotten a touch easier than it used to be. I certainly can’t attribute it to Apple making it any easier for users, but even Apple knows that there is a segment of users that it does not sell a product for, and has zero desire to sell into, given the overall direction Apple has been heading in for years.

As long as Apple continues to sell 5m Macs a quarter and they’re content with that, they aren’t going to change their product mix very much. Even then, it would be to simply rework their portable offerings and possibly update the iMac, but that’s about it. They won’t ever embrace a mid-size/full-size expandable tower even at some sort of premium pricing. That ship sailed the day the 2006 Mac Pro was launched.

Makes sense as their computers got to be more expensive than the competition with little to nothing to differentiate them. And then there are the keyboard issues.

I used to be a HUGE Mac guy - 2001-2017. Had a bunch of Macs and there was nothing that could compete. They were priced at the upper end of the price spectrum. But you got more for your $$ and they were not much more than a high end PC. iPhone, iPad, iMac, etc. I just bought it.

Then things changed. The obsession with thin and light and removing ports. So you had to have dongles. And then the price kept going up while the features stagnated and the PC prices kept going down.

In 2017 I bought an HP Spectre x360 as I wanted a touchscreen machine and the iPad was a joke. Since Apple refused I bought that machine. Paid $1800 for a 15", 4k screen, 512GB SSD, 16GB. It's been an awesome machine. Dropped a few times, goes everywhere and keeps on working reliably. Liked it so much I built a beast of a desktop (Ryzen 7, 32GB, 1TB SSD) too for around $1100 that same year.

Got the craving for a tablet and picked up a low end Surface Pro 5 last year. Other than the constraints of only 4GB RAM it's been great. It works good as a tablet and is light enough to throw in my computer bag. Cost $700. Didn't expect to love it but I do.

Should I have stayed in the Apple camp I'd be over $2500 for a comparable computer and missing touch which is great BTW, have about $1-2k in an iPad, $4k+ in a MacPro or iMac Pro. For what would that have been better? Windows 10 is quite good, no issues with all 3 machines and MacOS could honestly learn a few things form Win 10.

The Wife is up for a new computer soon - her MBA is getting long in the tooth. The budget is $1800 or so and she can pick anything but a Dell. Will be interesting to see what she picks as I encourage her to try it out.

I think Apple is simply pricing themselves out of the market compared to PC's. It doesn't help that Microsoft seems to actually be trying on the hardware and software front. The new Surface stuff looks quite good and interesting. Will be interesing to see the reviews, especially of the ARM Surface.

As an Apple stockholder it somewhat concerns me as I hope I can get out with good profits. As an innovative company, Apple has lost its edge. Time for Tim to go.

macOS has not materially advanced since Snow Leopard, the hardware is less reliable and more expensive, the entire lineup suffers thermal issues when actually used (not just refreshing a social media feed) and you get less for your money. It is filled with gimmicks and compromises and is not worth the money.

Windows 10 is just as good as macOS, with equal or better hardware being available from other vendors for much less than Apple is charging.

$800 for an i3 Mac mini with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. That's a $350 HP.

But they're making more money, so that's all that matters I guess.

The real question is why Gartner is still making charts and tables in office in office 95.
because the News business isnt exactly flush with cash at the moment its been a hard few years, plus they wouldn't want to have to learn new keyboard shortcuts :p

No problem, keep producing Starbucks notebook's then we'll continue to look elsewhere. Only question is when will Apple get it that it's professional audience need more than variations of the MacBook Air...

In the mean time, enjoy selling $3K-$4K notebooks to students, that likely have no real need, with ever diminishing professionals on the platform...

Poor performance, poor reliability, endless excuses, Vetoed all Apple's computers some years past...

Q-6

Wow, that’s awesome. None of the numbers correlate between the two reports, including historical sales, which I would think couple be found in public ally available material or investor news.

The absurdity of “news” and statistics aside, how does HP rank as number 1 (or 2) in PC sales? Thinking back over 25 years of PC ownership, I can’t remember a single time an HP looked like either a good value or an attractive option. The HP brand signals cheap construction, low specs and crappy design, to me. 🤷‍♂️

Hopefully things will turn for the better after Apple recently kicked their washed-up bald bozo to the curb.

Very happy here with my 17in Dell Inspiron.
I’m glad you're happy with your computer. I’d like to think that at least some of those PC customers are making wise and informed choices. (And despite my own decided preference for Macs, I’ve occasionally advised friends to buy PCs when that seemed a better choice in their own particular circumstances.)

Note that I did not write, “Show us where it says any PC customers are happy.” I was merely responding to falainber, who asserted that the article said that “for each happy Apple customer (Mac user) there 10 happy PC customers.”

In fact, the article said nothing at all about the level of customer satisfaction of those 10 PC customers. (But even if it had, given that the article also says that the iMac wasn’t updated in 2019—which is manifestly false—I’d suggest taking anything this article says with a grain of salt.)

Not much of a surprise. Apple doesn't put much attention toward computers anymore. Also, they could make nice with Nvidia again (for cuda apps - like some super popular ones in the Adobe Suite). Maybe Apple should spin computers into their own division. At least the Pro level ones.
I'm just glad someone is finally sticking it to Nvidia.
You know what I'm not glad about? The ****ing keyboard.
[automerge]1570921229[/automerge]
A lot of comments about the keyboard, but I’ve had a 2019 MBP for 2 months and haven’t had a problem yet.
I think the very first thing I typed on that keyboard was a typo. My 2016 MBP at work has an external keyboard semi-permanently placed atop it. Fits really nicely.

No, you're not, as a family of five (2 adults, 3 children) and looking back just 2 years, every one of us had an iPhone, iPad and either an iMac or MBP. For several years everything was upgraded swiftly on new releases.

Today, only 2 iPhones, 2 Ipads and a Mac Mini. Everything else is now Windows and Android. I expect to have less Apple products this time next year.

I deeply regret buying the 2016 MBP and waiting for the new keyboard before I make another purchase. I have $3000 set aside whenever that new MBP keyboard materializes.

Yeah, because how much hair someone does or does not have is a totally valid indicator of a company’s commitment to product quality.

Troglodyte.

Apple are you hungry enough? You could blow them away with such little effort! Don't be so pigheaded.

Please make a system people want.
  • The Monarch Butterfly has flown! Scissors are reliable & quiet! Don't ruin them when you redesign it this time.
  • Serviceable system - Even MS see's the light!
  • Upgradable RAM & Storage (2nd drive) Really need to embrace M.2 SSD's for second drive (T2 primary)
  • Cooling & Power! The CPU needs better cooling to get what it's designed to offer for performance. I shouldn't need to throw my system in an Ice box for a long vid render as the AC charger & battery can't offer the needed power to run it at room temp.
  • Ports! Back onboard! Please give us two USB-A ports with the four USB-C ports modify the back USB-C ports so a MagSafe plug can be flush mounted with a charging LED! And lastly give us Ethernet & SD card support. Even MS see's the beauty of a magnetically attached power connection (which you did first! And then abandoned!) and they have USB-A & SD support onboard in their Surface units!
I'm tired of waiting if this next series doesn't offer what I need I'm moving on.

Great summary!
that is the SIMPLE reason for me or other potential new buyer to buy or upgrade, since they "lock" the system and unable for us to upgrade just a basic RAM and storage, apple need to wake up otherwise some of old diehard will abandon the boat.

my last purchase 2011 and 2015

LOL. I have MSI stealth, this keyboard is tragic. Butterfly is 100 times more convenient.
And best of all, you have four years (!) of replacement program protecting your 100 times better keyboard from Apple. Nice job.

I can't imagine that this doesn't have something to do with the fact that Dell, HP, and Lenovo don't all have strongholds in the Enterprise in ways that, despite maybe some of Apple's recent gains, Macs simply do not. Then again, iPad and iPhone are finding their way into Enterprise IT even in places that don't and never will have Macs in their environments.

That’s because there are many people out there (like me) waiting for some meaningful product change to upgrade - that isn’t going to cost us £5k+ ($5k for our American friends).
No that is $6.2K+ (at current exchange rate) another $1.2k can make a lot of people think again, I totally agree with the rest of your comment tho. And no this was not ment as a nit pick a 20% price difference ( well price difference is a bit in accurate as it is actually the same price but due to currency difference the us price seems higher and it consumes more dollars) is rather significant.

Perhaps if they dropped the stupid high pricing

You might wanna reevaluate your answer there. :) Have you seen the price of the latest Surface Laptops or the high end Lenovos?
