Mac Studio Still Facing Up to 10-Week Shipping Delay Nearly Six Months After Launch

I can understand why the demand is so high. It’s the best Mac I’ve ever owned and for the first time in what feels like forever with Apple I feel like I got good value out of the buy for what I paid. The base M1 Max model has been perfect for me.

As soon as they release a 27inch iMac this thing will go the way of the cube. Most people that want a desktop also want a decent screen and the iMac offers much better value in that regard.
Really? And if you want a second monitor, you have to get one that doesn't match the iMac, and blerk, you have an unsymmetrical, mess of a desktop just like that.

Or, you can buy a headless Mac, and match it to whatever matching monitors you like, upgrade them, change them, whatever you fancy. You can even use it as a semi-portable if you're heading to any location that already has monitors you can plug into, say, off to work, a drop in rent-a-desk office, a friend's house, or a lab at uni.

I have four displays hooked up to my Studio Ultra. Three are 32" LG 4K USB-C displays; left canted inwards at 45°, center at 0° (straight ahead), right canted inwards at 45° for X-Plane flight simulator. And an independent Studio Display on another table for general computing and photo processing.

I'm a fan of most Apple offerings (as in iMac, Mini, old cheese grater) as I have had the older ones and a 2015 MBP.

Not sure that the iMac would be in the same niche as the Studio so I'll have to disagree with your comment. However it seems that Apple has done some sort of marketing calculus that tells them how much to overlap models and which feature to hold back on to leave people wanting more ... as in buy again within a couple of years no matter what model one buys. The iMac may not be considered as "pro" as the Studio and those that buy the Studio may prefer other monitors that are specific to their tasks.

Yes…this comment is correct…but

you hear a lot of people say “people don’t need all of the power…”. As if they are telling Apple that they are developing and creating to much power for users that is not necessary or telling them there is no need to do this.

Average users have the Mac mini or MacBook Air. Some of us do things that require CPU and GPU power like scientific calculations, 3D rendering, video work etc. Those who are actually “Pros” where time is money or need to get projects out at the shortest time possible or they loose business NEED the power and speed.

Internet, MS Office users, social media junkies and self-y picture Narcissus users don’t need it.

The problem may not be the Ultra chip itself, it may be the min 64 GB RAM required for the Ultra. On Apple's US site, the Max Studio with 64 GB RAM has the same ship time as the 64 GB and 128 GB Ultras (8-10 weeks). I.e., what determines if a Studio has long ship times is its RAM size, not whether it's Max or Ultra.

Yes, the M1 Max MBP with 64 GB RAM has short ship times, so there are probably additional complexities as well....

Edit: Saw your earlier post right after I posted mine!:
What I don’t see in the article is that the 64gob memory options pushes the Max out 8-10 weeks as well, in addition to the base Ultra. Definitely appears to (still) be a constraint on those RAM modules.

Edit: Is it a different part than the MBP’s use? I note that 64gb doesn’t affect the lead times for M1 Max Macbook Pros. If its the same part then I’m sure it’s easily prioritized for the more popular MacBook Pro lineup... still seems kinda wild to me.
They both use LPDDR5-6400 RAM and, since the chips are (presumably) identical, I would guess the RAM would be identical as well. But I don't know for certain....

I ordered a Studio Max with 1 TB and 64 G of Ram. It wasn't 8-10 weeks. Maybe now it is. As I mentioned in another post, mine came a few days earlier than what they stated as a delivery date.

Ordered July 21st and delivered August 2nd. For those having to wait longer, I do feel for them as I have had other items take weeks and one item (from indiegogo) take well over a year and finally demanded a refund.

Waited around 12 weeks for my Ultra. Well worth the wait - the time doesn't matter in comparison to the lifespan on the machine in the studio here. Probably get 5+ years of effective service out of it. We'll supplement it with a new Mac Pro when they come out. Over the years every Mac Pro we purchased - apart from the trashcan - we got up to 10 years of effective use out of them. Solid investments.

Around the time that Microsoft Vista came out (my team had to put it on the bench and run it through rigorous testing)...I opted at home to leave that world and go to Apple. I felt good about the familiarity with Intel and that the OS was now based on a Unix type of system. In turn, my very first Mac was an early Mac Pro. To be honest, I really enjoyed the experience, engaged all 4 sleds, added to optical drives and upped the RAM .... during that time I was doing various projects that enjoyed that system's abilities. I really do miss the how easy it was to upgrade those machines with today's offerings. Since then I have had Minis, iMacs, MBP and now the Studio. If not for the memory management issue, I would say this latest purchase has been my finest tool for computer work and pleasure.

And, poor me... here I am with my M1 Mac Mini 16/512 (purchased when it was "the new thing") and happy as a lark. 😆

Imagine if his was released by Apple. Hopefully next time?

If you really need a Mac Studio, Best Buy has one version of the M1 Max in stock. Apple's refurbished is an alternative as well with rotating stock, but if you can find the model you want, you can get it quickly.

A 64GB Max uses half the chip at double the capacity.

What might be an issue is lead times between assembling the SoC ( the RAM size is set here) and assembling the Studio.

Might very well be that they still have plenty 32GB Max but everything else is delayed upstream.

Sorry, I'm not following what you're trying to say with either of these statements.

Do people really need Ultra? I have Mac Studio with M1 Max and it handles virtually everything for me....
Some people do need it. Different people, different needs. For many people an ancient Core2Duo with an up to date linux distribution will handle everything for them.

Apple does their homework, if they took the time and resources for developing the M1 Ultra, rest assured that there’s a demand for it.

Can't agree with this. Buying a mini or a Studio gives you the choice to buy the screen you want, and update it when you want. That's why I've done it that way for the last decade.
