Do people really need Ultra? I have Mac Studio with M1 Max and it handles virtually everything for me....
"virtually" everything? So by your own admission, it doesn't actually handle everything you need. You've answered your own question, you need Ultra ;)
Myself, no, I didn't need Ultra. But I wanted one and at the time, I had an unexpected windfall so that's what I bought.

As soon as they release a 27inch iMac this thing will go the way of the cube. Most people that want a desktop also want a decent screen and the iMac offers much better value in that regard.
They're going to have a long, long wait. I don't think there will ever be another 27" iMac.

Well yea :D otherwise noone would buy it :D
"Need" is a vague term. I don't "need" my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, but it makes some tasks slightly faster and it makes me happy. If I had a lot more money I might convince myself I "need" an M1 Ultra. I have a friend who did just that. No way he "needs" his Mac Studio for the work he does, but whatever.

And that is the “carrot” that Apple waves in front of us with the Mac Studio.

For those who “know” they will not need or can afford the next Mac Pro (I am sure the cost will be eye watering), the Mac Studio is a tempting offer in its place…

Well with that definition noone “needs” an M1 mac, period. An intel core 2 duo CAN do what the M1 can, just far, far, far, slower.

Your own definition of “need” actually makes your own observation pretty useless :/

Have you tried to buy a new car recently? You would be crazy happy when dealership offered you a 2 month delivery.

As for the main issue - looks like a fake availability issue to pump the sales.
Not really. People that never worked in high volume manufacturing should stop making comments like this.
there were shutdowns in Shanghai and other parts of China like 2 months ago.
And new problem in China is heat wave and power shortage.
Factories are shutting down for days.
suppliers producing screws are shutdown means assy has to stop, even if single part is missing assy has to stop.
it is difficult to recover from 2 days shut down.
All manufacturing tools have to be re validated, product has to be re validated.
i work in manufacturing, factory in China was shutdown for 1 week.
they started making parts with out tuning/validating manufacturing equipment and we started seeing defective parts as soon as they started making parts.

It would be interesting to see what are the yields for these M1 chips and how many can they actually make.
The Mac Studio is anyway a low volume product while the M1 Ultra is a server grade chip in terms of size. Developing such a chip exclusively for such a product is generally not worth it.
Most of the companies bin chips based on what kind of chip is needed, performance vs energy consumption.
It is rare to have different manufacturing process for every chip they make.

I'd have loved the Mac Studio... if it didn't have those blasted ports in front! Keep them in BACK, like on the M1 Mac Mini! Ugh! 🤮
Does putting the ports up front make it easier to charge phone/ipad, etc though? I kind of like that idea.

It does. I also like using it for a USB flash drive and the dongle for Logitech's peripherals. I have found the Logitech stuff works better when the dongle is in the front as opposed to the back.

Depends on your needs I guess. For instance I do NOT want to go the back of my box to plug-in my DJI Drones for file transfer when I don't want to remove the card (MavicPro2). I do not want to search the back for a port to connect my Gnarbox Backup drive from my daily field work. I do not want to go to the back, if I want to quickly charge my phone while I'm working... etc., etc., etc.

Yes…this comment is correct…but

you hear a lot of people say “people don’t need all of the power…”. As if they are telling Apple that they are developing and creating to much power for users that is not necessary or telling them there is no need to do this.

Average users have the Mac mini or MacBook Air. Some of us do things that require CPU and GPU power like scientific calculations, 3D rendering, video work etc. Those who are actually “Pros” where time is money or need to get projects out at the shortest time possible or they loose business NEED the power and speed.

Internet, MS Office users, social media junkies and self-y picture Narcissus users don’t need it.
I think you missed my rather thick and blunt sarcasm somehow.

I think I missed it because I read users on this site constantly say that people don’t need the power and it is over kill. I have worked with under powered macs for too long and now have something that is not limited or throddled down due to heat or purposely limited for various reasons…

Apple keep it coming!!!

Um, you didn't look at my sig, did you? Rafiki: "Look HARDER..."
As a matter of fact I didn’t. Signatures don’t appear by default in mr if you browse it on an iPhone vertically.

Hope you’re glad with the mini, it’s an awesome, very capable machine. And no front ports 😂.
