I have to agree with tabaczka. This is becoming a big waste of time and very annoying. I have never owned a Mac, but now that Mac's have Intel processors and I can dual boot windows for gamming and run Linux using parallels I thought I'd give one a try.
I accidentally stumbled on to this site while looking for MBP reviews, and learned about this WWDC thing. There seemed to be some basis to the rumors that the MBP would see and upgrade to C2D then (or at least an announcement of the upgrade date). That's worth waiting a week I told myself. That was a no go. Ok, then it seemed that it might be a non keynote announcement...nope. Ok, maybe one of these super secret, stealth, Black Op, Tuesday, store updates... 3 Tuesdays later...nothing. Ok maybe an early September Tuesday...Then the store was down today for a few minutes...heart racing...still nothing but more disappointment. Maybe the 12th at this Paris thing...then again maybe not...how about the 25th, it is a Tuesday after all...yea right. I know! Maybe Dec 30, 2008...that's a Tuesday!
I could have bought a high-end laptop with a Memron processor from a half dozen venders for over a week now. Come on Apple...what's the hold up? If Apple is actually waiting around for some big Mac meeting in Paris to announce a simple hardware update (that their competitors have already made) so that they can make a big to-do about being last in the market with this update...well then honestly that's just stupid. OK I could understand being secretive about this upgrade and making a big deal about the announcement if they were going to be the first in the market with a memron laptop. But that ship has sailed and Apple wasn't even on the dock. Even if they release this update this month, the only thing they can brag about now is that, "Hey, a month later, we finally caught up with Dell!"
Every Mac user I have ever met was practically a fanatic about Apple. From what I have seen over the last month, I couldn't tell you why. Honestly, Apple should have a little more respect for its customer base by being a lot more forthcoming about updates/upgrades. What's the big deal! At least release the date, so people can make plans to either upgrade or not. Every computer manufacture in the world knows that most schools start around August, and students looking to upgrade or by new computers will be looking either shortly before or after school starts. I have read dozens of post from students trying to decide whether to wait or not. How can they make this decision without even knowing WHEN (or even IF) this upgrade will happen. Did anyone happen to look at the poll on this site last week? Almost 3,000 people waiting for a C2D MBP and that is just the people that took the time to do the poll. There is probably really 10x that many.
I'm sorry, but IMO, given the 64 bit improvements that will come with the new version of Mac OS X, every MBP Apple sells/has sold between WWDC and the announcement (not the release... just the announcement) of a C2D MBP is a disgrace. If you know when the upgrade will happen, and decide to buy now any way (or don't do your pre-purchase homework) than that is your problem. If you buy one today and three days later they start shipping C2D's that is borderline unethical IMO.
Come on, Apple, how about actually giving us some information to work with? I have waited this long, so unfortunately I'll probably still wait and by a Mac. Why... I don't know. The only thing that would make this wait worth while (and justify the release delay) is some crazy announcement like they were upgrading the GPU from the x1600 to the x1800 as a surprise. Some how I doubt there will be any surprises.
