I think now it's FFmpeg that does the GPU offloading (via VDA) in Movist, as its Mac App Store page says:

Thx been a while since I looked, efficiency of both these players under OS X is equally impressive. Same as your observations VLC can exceed 30% of CPU, so unfortunately I dropped it some time back, as for me a Notebook must be portable and have a sustained run time of the "cord" applications that are needlessly power-hungry I will look for more efficient alternatives when ever possible.

Is there a 'normal' for these figures? As ever - I've not really been worried until I read the forum.. Just installed Coconut Battery and found mine is at 96.5% after 7 cycles. Max charge 5119mAh. Should I just forget about it until it looks really bad (given I've got a year of Genius time?

Your advise to yourself is sound, I would not worry unless you observe a significant downward trend, "Coconut Online" can give an indication of average battery performance, equally I wouldn't obsess. Remember people flock to tech forums with issues, rarely praise.

After using my macbook pro for 2 months, the battery has decreased around 350 mAh.

I agree about the necessary efficiency. Please do share your findings ;)

Probably better in a separate thread, all the same;
  • Preview use QuickView, or change to Skim (Previews PDF rendering engine is broken, and results in poor performance)
  • UBlock prevents unwanted AD`s from loading, reducing the load
  • VLC use Movist or MPV (open source) 30% of global CPU versus 7%
  • Handbrake use Ripit or MakeMKV (open source) don't expect the same functionality as Handbrake these App`s are designed to Rip your physical media, equally they can produce good quality MKV`s, without the associated massive load Handbrake places on the system
  • Sublar Remuxes/repackages video to MP4 format and more, why transcode video, when often you can simply repackage the data to a new container in a faction of the time and resource cost
  • Chrome users use Chrome Canary far more optimised for OS
  • For AV, use ClamXav (now a paid app) and set up sentry & scanning intelligently
  • Apply 10.10.4
If anyone knows more, add then on...

I started seeing drops as well. 20 cycles and 93%. Took it to the Apple Store and they said there is something wrong with the battery and are replacing the laptop. I'll be getting a new one next week.

replace an entire laptop because of a bad battery? does this sound like a design problem to anyone else?

Read the thread, Apple wanted the complete system back for analysis as they consider it to be an an anomaly, typically Apple will just replace the bottom case of the unibody in the case of a battery exchange.

Q-6
now that makes sense. thank you.

I find that the battery degrades quickly in the first month/s to around 90% then plateaus. My last Macbook Pro dropped to 88% within a few weeks then slowly dropped to 82% over 3 years.

My month old MBR is currently at 94% design capacity.

Ok this is just the thread I was looking for. I asked someone with a 13" retina MacBook Pro, and after 22 cycles he's still at 100%. Here with the MacBook I'm at 95% (5041/5297 mAh) after 13 cycles. Definitely something weird with those batteries I guess.

What is the original capacity of its battery? Mine is currently at 5168 mAh and has fluctuated to below 5048 at times. The original capacity was about 5200 mAh or slightly more if I remember correctly. I cannot bring it for servicing unless it falls below 4160 mAh (80 percent) and 1000 cycles.

As mentioned its original capacity is 5297. I'm currently at 5041.

I was at an Apple Store today. Did a random check of some RMB12s on display. It looks like most of the units had between 4997 to 5080 mAh after about 15 cycles of use.

i made a thread and recorded my battery health since day 1... now i'm at 92%. :(

am I happy that Apple warranty covers it?? Doesn't help me now. does it?
rMBP Late 2013. 123 cycles. Still at 98% capacity. Such a great computer!

I've had my rMB (1.3GHz, 512GB) for a little over a month. Currently I have 16 cycles, 96% with 5075 mAh current max. I am going to try to use it plugged in a bit more often to save wear on the battery. I was shocked to find out that I had 16 cycles racked up already – I thought it would have been only about 7 cycles or so.

Question 1. – Is it good to mix it up (using it plugged in and using battery power) to extend the overall life of the battery?

Question 2. – What is the best battery percentage to re-charge? When it's down to 25-30%?
