Well this is disappointing. I have only had my MacBook Air 2018 for a few months and now they introduce True Tone? With a price decrease and improved keyboard? This only shows that they could have had True Tone on the MacBook Air 2018 from the beginning with the current price, but chose not to so that they could sell more iPad Pros with that feature. The sales tactics of Apple are really discouraging... I hope we don't have to hear Tim Cook or anyone else at Apple dismiss the claim that Apple overcharges for its products (and worse, that holds off on great features for some products just to make a quick buck on others...)

Not at all. But there’s a difference between technology getting cheaper over time (always welcome) and Apple holding off on features and playing with pricing to see how much they can squeeze out of their customers (particularly those of us who are invested in the Apple ecosystem). I just feel that Apple is not trying to be competitive, just plain greedy.
 
Am I the only one who fears that a functioning, scissor keyboard will be a new luxury feature of Macs, just like FaceID is for iPads? If so, there won't be a new upgrade to Macbook Airs in this respect for years to come (and the rumored new keyboard for MBA 2019 is actually the "improved" butterfly keyboard we just got), while the new $2,999 16" Macbook will be the one featuring a new scissor keyboard.

So you don’t think this has anything to do with the newer components now being cheaper, and therefore Apple being able to sell a better device at a better price?

I don’t. I was expressing an opinion, not a certainty. I haven’t heard any news about the technology used for TrueTone undergoing a production cost decrease of any sort. Instead, all I see is articles and users commenting on how the technology Apple sells does not justify its cost. It’s the Apple tax at work, paying to be in the echo system and with a hardware-software integration that, granted, you can’t beat. So yes, I think they only reason that they are offering TrueTone and a lower price on Macbook Airs is because they weren’t convincing enough people to buy them at that price and so they had to sweeten the deal. It’s just my opinion, of course, and we will probably never have the full story as Apple conveniently stopped reporting unit sales...

The 2018 Air has been available for at least 8/9 months so you have no argument here. I'd expect to see at least 1-2 spec updates/refreshes in a 12 month period. That's how the industry has worked for nearly 40 years.
 
Did the brightness of the screen also change with the “true tone” upgrade. I notice they quote the brightness for the pro 13” 500 nits in the spec page but not for the Air (checked yesterday)

I guess they needed to add this (TT) to “discontinue” the 12” macbook, but did they match the brightness to be able to claim its as a full replacement addressing the only one USB C and the 8GB limit

The brightness will be 400nits like the 2018 MBA after the update. Just with TrueTone added.

The fact that this shocks you shows how new you are to...everything. This isn’t the first time they’ve released a new version of a product and decreased the price. And even then, what’s it matter? Does your MacBook just stop working or something?

I know that products get updated as new technology is available, and prices decrease once a product starts not being so new, and I welcome that. What I criticize is Apple's desorbitant pricing (e.g. why, instead of lowering the price of the MBA now, simply release it for the same price as the old one from the get-go?) or holding on to features that they could afford to include in their base models while keeping competitive pricing (e.g. TrueTone), only to keep their premium products premium. What not try to be leaders in innovation instead, and offer new exciting features that the competition does not have? Apple has every right to have this business strategy, but it's a crappy one in my opinion. Like airlines making conditions in economy class worse only to lure people into first class, instead of actually improving first class...

These new MBAs are shipping fast. Ordered on Tuesday (late afternoon) and received both the MBA and Studio3s this morning. Haven't opened the MBA yet (it's a gift for my wife) but I did open the headphones. Even though I was intent on selling them, after trying them out this morning I've decided to keep them.

The way I see it, this not only creates more room for premium seats, but it also makes premium seats more appealing to a customer that might have the money for business class but who would be happy traveling economy if the seat wasn't so claustrophobic. But we digress XD

Actually, that's exactly what they're doing. Airlines make significantly more money on business and first class on international flights even though there are fewer seats. They want you to pay for the business seat.

Hate to tell you all this, but each airline almost has an entirely different strategy... southwest vs. Delta or Lufthansa....and what's worse? strategy always changes.
