I got the $999 Air. This will be a casual use machine so not much power is needed. One of the first things I'll try on it is a Zoom meeting. I remember the last intel Air the fans would go full blast using Zoom.

A macbook air with function keys and working vscode extensions (in a couple years?) could be a nice machine.

I don't really understand why the pro is more expensive and needs a fan. Higher frequency?
Thermal architecture reduces/eliminates the need for artificial throttling, unlocking the full potential of the chip.

It's an interesting paradigm shift from how things work in the Intel world, and I am here for it.

is there actually a 7 core gpu in the lower config vs 8 on the higher config or is that a typo?

Looks like both MBA and MBP have same display, SOC (except the GPU), RAM, USB/TB ports, and storage. MBP has better battery life and the touch bar, but IMO that's not worth an extra $300. Disappointed in the MBP upgrade, especially the max 16gb RAM, but the MBA seems like a good value for money.
You're missing that the MBP's M1 will have much higher output, especially for sustained and graphics-intensive workloads because of its thermal architecture (having a fan). It's a different way of thinking of things because in the Intel world we would have two different processors, but now, we have the same M1 just managed differently to account for the different chassis capabilities.

i think next year we will see a whole new design
14.1 microled
M2

24hour battery life
CPU generations change every year and Apple cannot stay a fully year without a replacement for the 13 inch High Spec Pro. I suspect will have a 14 inch pro probably in Q/21 and the only difference in the chip will be the ability to address 32 Gb or more. They might call it M1X

I think you're right for the foreseeable future, but they'll need GPU and memory options for the Mac Pro.

They have memory options now - I was just saying they aren't user configurable after purchase and I don't think they will be ever again due to the SoC fully contained design

I really don't understand what Apple is doing with their pricing schemes online. They make it look like they have two different models to offer, but they don't. Because if you click on the 256 gb model on the left, you can upgrade it to 512 and have the same specs and price as the model on the right. It makes no sense. They should have just one model and then let you choose any upgrades you want.

The newly announced MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models that Apple announced today are equipped with the same 8-core M1 chip that also offers an integrated GPU, with Apple offering no CPU upgrades.

macbook-air-m1-models.jpg

There is, however, a GPU upgrade available for the MacBook Air. By default, the MacBook Air ships with an M1 chip with a 7-core GPU, while the MacBook Pro has the same M1 chip with an 8-core GPU.

If you choose the $1,249 MacBook Air model with a 512GB SSD, it upgrades to an 8-core GPU instead of the default 7-core GPU, but there is no custom configuration option to choose the lower tier model with the upgraded 8-core GPU option.

Both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro can be customized with more RAM and more storage space. The Mac mini also has the same M1 chip with 8-core GPU as the MacBook Pro with no GPU/CPU upgrade option available. The new models are available today and will start shipping out next week.

Weird they state the Air's M1 is 9X faster while the Pro's M1 is 11X faster since they're comparing to the previous Air and Pro respectively. Shouldn't that be the other way around if it's the same chip in both? Otherwise that means the previous Air was faster than the previous Pro...

I may end up buying one of these two. The only difference is the lack of a Touch Bar and slightly lower battery life on the Air?

Obviously it's going to be a less powerful system too, with lowered clock speed and throttling when it goes too hot.

Interesting way to structure the lineup. I'm honestly surprised there isn't a little bit more to differentiate the Pro from the Air (no ProMotion :() but I can see a clear direction to the structure. Likely an M2 or M1X coming next year to replace the Intel chips in the high-end 13" and 16" MBPs.
Yeah I'd imagine the next refresh will add a few more CPU options. M2-A, M2-B, M2X or whatever naming convention they settle on.

No because obviously the chip is clocked different in each system - it performs much better in the Pro because it has fans and a big chassis for cooling.
