Apple has 3 notebooks that cater to everyone's needs. Everyone can justify why they need one. Having used all three - the MBA suits my needs as a traveling computer - weight savings is a priority and it's quick enough to perform iWork/email/internet tasks. I've gotten a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and really the one USB port isn't a big deal to me.

As long as we are all using OSX - it's all good! Remember that.

Oh and one more thing - the MBA will serve as the basis for future developments on the MB and MBP - to make them even more thin and light, while keeping the features that the power users need.

Indeed, you're probably right -- maybe we'll even see the multi-touch trackpad installed onto other MacBoo...oh, right. ;)

Ha, I guess my point flew over the COO's head;)

Apple had an idea how well the AIR would sell.

When they first arrived at stores and I tried to purchase one they "werent available for sale artificially inflating demand. When AIR's finally became available they had short supply and still receive small incremental shipments to Apple stores. This creates an artificial "selling like hotcakes I have to have one because they are in such short supply" hysteria.

The stores arent receving huge amounts. I don't doubt it's selling well, but it's not hard to sell out a few, we're not talking iphone supplies. Air is a wonderful niche product and people should keep that in perspective when proclaiming it's the next ipod.

And how did you even BEGIN to address his point?

Money. Table. At least TRY to discuss.

*sigh*

There definitely is a market for it -- even though it might not appeal to all of us geeks at MR! :D

I agree, this is a very small percant of who's out there, and we think as geeks, not as everyday people. I still want one, even though it's not as powerful as i would want.

I didn't want one until today, when I found out it was in short supply.
Now I can't live without one :p

i HIGHLY DOUBT IS DEMAND.

everytime i go to an apple store
people play with it but then look towards the macbook.

I really dont understand the logic behind apple putting demos of the air next to the macbook. When people start comparing they see that for the money the macbook tops it in every way.

They should promote it next to the mbp's since both are silver and give a pro feeling.
Sell them a pro-entry computer.
or simply on a desk by itself.
Not clever marketing wise at all and apple should know better then to do that.
"i HIGHLY DOUBT IS DEMAND"... what, did you type this on your iPhone... with your feet?

Apple's stores are expanding while so many have closed their doors. They are gaining in market share in many markets. They are the the #2 music seller in the world and are #1 in the Education market AND YOU want to critique how they set up their displays? That's funny.

You're watching the "casual browser" -- checking out the whole store and seeing the new stuff. Perhaps they came in for a MacBook and while they were there, they wanted to at least see what Apple has been up to. Every time I go into an Apple store, I check out the whole store AND THEN seek out an associate to go get what I want so I can leave. Nobody buys and then roams the store. They leave.

I bet that 99% of the people wanting the Air buy the Air and are very informed on the pros/cons of the machine. It's the kind of product that isn't really an impulse buy. You know going in that you want one. Also, for the people wanting this, it's not a matter of saving a few bucks to get the MacBook. They can afford this -- their big decision is getting the HD version or the SSD one.

best buy macbook air ?

I work at a best buy and they sent us in five of them a couple days after the apple store got ahold of them and we have only seen one fly off the shelf. They are super sturdy and built well seeing that we put them through a couple drop test at work.

I wonder how limited the supply is on the custom chip that Intel built for the macbook air? It is possible that only a limited number of Air's were built to test the waters and now Apple is just dribbling them on to the market.

Since Intel is dropping merom cpu's I wonder if they will keep making the new custom motherboard for Apple or if they will switch these out with their new ultra-low power cpu line?

I personally expected the Air to sell really well the first six months much like the cube did in it's initial run. But once that niche of buyers are saturated I wonder how well sales will continue. Maybe Apple is purposely keeping supply low to extend the life of the Air hoping that new tech will get cheaper and make a less expensive Air that appeals to a larger group.

Watching carefully, Apple sends constrained supplies of new devices out carefully on a near daily watchlist (Air, iPhone). They seem to be doing customer supplied QC for the first 2 weeks or so before they really ramp up the production lines.

This must be the new style of bleeding edge (insanely great) releasing method technologies.

Short Supply In Columbus

My Dad sure had difficulty getting one here a week or so ago. They got new shipments every day and sold them out - granted not huge numbers (5-6 daily, I think) - and after several calls they agreed to hold one for him for an hour so he could get to our local Apple store and buy it.

It is a very well built machine - but as many have pointed out not for the power users likely to be on MR forums. A firewire connector would have been nice to include.

Our local Best Buys didn't get any at all - but if poster above is legit (?) they would have just drop-tested them into oblivion anyway:rolleyes:

Why is the Air selling so well.

Well try carrying a mbp in your backpack almost 24/7 and your get a good idea.

The macbook air replaces my vaio t150 which seems primitive by comparison.

I couldn't care less about the RAM (2GB is plenty), the processor power, and can even make out with the wimpy graphics, and no optical drive, because you can hook the Apple one up if you need to. But what makes the MBA a no-sale for me is
1) The price
2) The small HD

If those problems were fixed, the MBA could be a primary laptop for me. And after giving that thought, I'm surprised it's that simple of a list. I could buy one in a few years with better technology for sure.

The price is definitely an issue, the small HD, not so much, I suspect I live and work like many other IT folks do now or will soon. I connect to my work pc via remote desktop and secure vpn so no need for a harddrive there, at home everything is virtualized and on servers.

The air was the first machine I had to really spend some time thinking about before buying, but when I walked into my local bestby and picked up an macbook air and then picked up a mbp sitting next to it, I was sold, there is a big weight difference, and it can even fit in a large handbag.

man, I hope they can make more by the time I need a new laptop...I can probably only hold out a year :)

Money!!

Well this sounds like AAPL going back to 200 after all the releases??

What do you mean? Did you mean that you saw one fall off of the self, or that you only saw one get bought?

I know that where i live you basically can't get one. I keep trying to go to London drugs (a big drug store that sells tones of apple stuff) and staple and future shop (basicaly the canadian best buy) and i still haven't seen one up close. I was also told by the people there that they were almost instantly sold.

Oh, and what do you all think is planned for tomorrows release? :p hahahaha

hm I wonder what is planned for days ahead?.. By the way, at my local best buy they've had a few macbook airs but don't think anyone wants to spend that much money to save on having to carry something just a little bit lighter with less features. I asked how many they had in stock and the girl said 3 and they had only sold 1 the entire weekend. Not sure if it's true..
