store down

The apple store has been down for hours, so hopefully something good is coming. I think it might be a mac pro, though, rather than a new air.

How many of the Air haters have actually used one? My Rev A/64GB SSD has been an excellent and highly portable work-horse for the last two years, well worth the premium I paid for it at the time - and we'll get another couple of years out of it. The thinness and weight makes it considerably more portable than my previous 12" Powerbook in pretty much every scenario, and pretty competitive for portability with the netbooks I'm acquainted with, without sacrificing as much function.

I admit, I have never used one.

I carry my 2.2 GHz 15" MBP to and from Uni (a ~2 hr commute each way) every day in my backpack, along with all the associated equipment I may need, and don't have a problem with its weight. I would be quite happy to buy a 17" in the future. Which is why I dispute the portability aspect.

Get some gym work people! :p

You wouldn't know until you traveled with one.

I travel extensively with a 13" MBP. Other than the reduced weight it's not going to make a profound difference in my carry on. But for that I pay a huge price in performance. That's my point, it's not really much better than a 13" MBP.

Yeah, now add a baby and associated paraphernalia (even if you avoid the worst of the over packing you see) and get back to me on that, especially if you're packing hand luggage on low-cost airlines. Day-to-day, that extra inch in your bag makes a big difference.

No it hasn't.

EDIT: or which store are you talking about?

Yup, you're an idiot. There's nothing wrong with the new Macbook Pros, they are fantastic. Unless you're talking about the 13" MBPs (which I care about only slightly more than the MBA) in which case you are correct.

Disagree. In my opinion, the MBPs are so fantastic not because of the operating system (which is a win by itself, but shall be ignored for the time being) but because they are fantastically well rounded. They have fantastic CPUs (ignoring the Core 2's of course), pretty good GPUs, lots of storage, a sufficient number of ports, fantastic battery life, and still manage to be unbelievably sexy, while not being overly expensive. I am unaware of any computer that can beat a MBP in speed, weight/size, battery life and price.

So what's wrong with a Macbook? Or a 13" Macbook Pro?

My question is, why can't we have better specs in the much more portable 13? They need to ditch the optical drive and use the space for a better processor, better graphics and bring the specs closer to the 15", along with the price, of course.

If you had ever used one then you would understand. It is much easier to pick and carry around than those specs imply

You need to go to the gym. I can hold my open 13" MBP on its very corner, between my thumb and index finger and stretch out my arm. It's only a pound or so different to the Air.

It's up now, but remember today's launch day for international iPad orders, so it might have been down for that reason?

That's not the point. If you haven't traveled with it, you wouldn't understand. Ever slide the MBA into the pouch in front of you during a flight? Makes a huge difference.

odd

I'm in Canada and the Canadian store is still down. The US store has just come back up in the last few minutes from where I am. It seems that for some people, the US store has been up for a while. Strange. Just came online for me.

Anyway, looks like it was just maintenance.

I think the answer depends on what you need. There is nothing "wrong" with a MacBook but if you don't need the power and do want to save some weight then a better question is "what's wrong with a MacBook Air"? I would argue that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Air and that people shouldn't look down on those who buy one.

Don't see how they would be able to put a Core i3 or better in the refreshed MBA's... the 13" MBP's didnt get it due to space right?

No, the 13" MacBook Pros didn't get the Core iX series because they have to have the Intel integrated graphics as part of the package. And Intel integrated graphics suck..

El Jobso said they chose the Core 2 Duo over the Core i3/i5 for the 13" MacBook Pro because it allowed them to pack in greater video performance (by use of a custom-made nVidia integrated GPU).

I'm just hoping that whatever it is that is coming that it isn't a refresh of the iMac since I ordered a 27" Core i7 version on Friday last week...

I bought two MacBook Airs in November and love them. Definitely looking forward to an upgrade with 4 or 6 gb of ram. Higher res screen of 1440x900 would be nice too.

Apple could easily do that, but the cost-benefit isn't there. The 13" MBP you describe would sell a few more to the enthusiast market, but would not sell well to the average consumer.

I do not believe that the extra engineering design effort would reap the necessary profits for Apple. That is what Apple is all about (profits), not making highly configurable computers with high logistics costs and low prices (like Dell).

Dell aren't all about profits? Better warn their shareholders.

I don't get why people worry about companies making a profit.

The complainers would not work for FREE ?

So?...............

Nobody needs to give anybody their money. It just so happens that Apple has changed how we do things and made our lives easier many times.

BTW: I am ready for that 23-27 inch portable, a slim imac with everything in it. No track pad it all happens by touch. Only a matter of time

Yawn. Who buys Airs other than pretentious people who think it looks good? Why would anyone spend more money for less power, less functionality and thickness that is 80% of the MacBook Pro at its thickest point, which is the critical benchmark.

Ooooooh I don't know. Maybe someone that wants to carry a light laptop around, wants to fit a small laptop into a smaller bag, prefers the design (yes you are allowed to buy a laptop that's aesthetically pleasing)...

There are a number of reasons people would purchase an MBA over MBP ;)
