I'm seeing the word NEW being used in numerous places on Apple's website surrounding the MacBook Air.

Mainly in the heading here...

http://www.apple.com/macbookair/

I don't know the old specs of the MBA, so I have no idea if the store indicates it is new. There is no NEW badge in the store right now.

Also saw this...

The store indicates no update as of Monday.

Yawn. Who buys Airs other than pretentious people who think it looks good? Why would anyone spend more money for less power, less functionality and thickness that is 80% of the MacBook Pro at its thickest point, which is the critical benchmark.

Apple should yank the optical drive from the MacBook Pro 13, add another hard drive (large mechanical + smaller SSD is the way to go) and make it a bit thinner with an i5 or i7 and a bigger fan. Now I would pay a premium for that.

The fact that it is 3lbs is what makes it attractive. It's effortless to hold it with one hand. I don't see how people who want an light laptop are "pretentious".

I don't own a MBA, but I've often wondered what life with one would be like. But I like to have lots of pixels and need more than 2GB of RAM; a slow CPU I can live with even though I do software development. If they could get the RAM to 4GB (ideally with an option for 8GB) *and* increase the resolution of the display (seems unlikely, even though the 15" MBP got a higher res option) I would think about getting an MBA.

What I really want is a 17" version of the MBA. No optical drive, as thin and light as you can possibly get a 17". Not going to happen, I know.

I think we can both agree that optical drives are a waste these days. I would love a 2nd drive option to replace the optical drive (for SSD + HDD like you said).

I would get me some popcorn and follow the uproar throughout the internet if Apple should dare to replace the harddrive with soldered-to-the-board NAND (remember the decision when it came to the new battery designs?).

But i think you're right - Apple is offering SSD's already (-> reliability should be no issue anymore these days) and volumewise they should get good prices on NAND anyway, so why not abandon the connectors and "bulky" HD housings for a couple of simple motherboard bugs...?! Some netbook makers are going this route for some time now...

There's already an option "in-between" the soldered on and the "bulky HD" - Mini-PCIe SSDs.

I don't see any larger than 64 GB right now, but larger ones might be in the pipeline.

We'll see ....

First off, what's wrong with people thinking the product "looks good" and making a purchasing decision with that as a deciding factor?

I didn't buy one of these, largely for the reasons you stated. I thought it looked really good, but when I tried one out in the Apple Store, I was disappointed by how sluggish it felt launching applications compared to any of the other Macs I already owned. (In some ways, it felt like my old Powerbook G4 17" notebook, speed-wise - except for the fact it was running current software and OS X 10.6.)

But some people won't have other Macs to compare it to, and/or will find it sufficient for their purposes. There are a lot of people out there in the business world who are concerned with their image. It's part of what they're paid to do ... to give presentations and network with potential clients while giving off a positive, "upscale" image about the company they work for. Wouldn't you get the feeling a company is more "successful" if their sales staff were armed with Macbook Airs, vs. carrying around beat-up Gateways or Dell Inspirons? For that matter, if they wanted to use OS X but were bent on saving money, they'd probably issue people plain Macbooks. Perfectly good machines, but won't impress people that much, especially when they're associated with entry-level laptops for high-school and college students.

+1.5Lbs on a 13" MBP isn't hurting anybody, unless your like... 80Lbs?

That's 1.5lbs of other stuff you can't carry, especially when your luggage allowance is maxed out.

Am I the only one who thinks that 8GB is more suitable for a machine that I am going to use as a primary for the next three years?

I love mine to bits, but I wouldn't use it as a primary if I was a heavy user. I'd get a Macbook Pro instead.

Am I Pretentious?

All of those that don't like the MBA, uh, don't buy it. I have one and it does what I need it to do. I am strong enough to carry a heavier machine, but like the fact that I don't have to. People can quibble over 1.5 pounds all they want, but when you carry around the 3 lb. MBA and then pick up a 4.5 lb. MBP, there is a big difference. If it's not worth your money, then don't buy it. But what is wrong with choice? Also, I think Apple likes having a "cool" ultra-lite in the lineup.

K87 might just be MBA because remember rumour K59 was for the 27" inch LED but I do hope the 27-inch comes out this week because I've been waiting to long for a display but if Apple does release the 27" inch this week I'm going to wait until after WWDC to buy one because I want to see what GPU Apple is going to put in the new Mac Pro's and will it work for my 2008, I hope Apple decides to put the ATi 5970 in the 2010 Mac Pro because the 5970 has mini display-port but will it fit in the Mac Pro or Apple may but Geforce 480 GTX Mac Edition either way I want to see would either GPU will work for my 08 Mac Pro if not I will buy a new Mac Pro.

Back in 2001, I was given a ThinkPad A20p which had a hot swappable DVD drive that could take an extra battery or I believe an extra HD. You could also replace the main HD with the removal of a single screw.

Good machines, those IBMs. Their designs were (are) hideous, but in a way rather charming!

this is another cube,
a great product with no market
especially that the ipad is out now

Macworld.com.au claims that Apple's MacBook Air could see updates as early as this week. They cite a "well-placed source" who identifies the new product number as MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. This source was previously able to pinpoint the recent MacBook Pro updates a week prior to their release.

It seems it's not entirely certain that the product number necessarily represents a new MacBook Air. Macworld Australia speculates it could also represent a new Apple LCD. Either way, several thousand of these items are presently on their way to Australia which indicates a major product launch.

According to our Buyer's Guide, a revised MacBook Air is overdue for release. It was last updated in June 2009 and was not updated alongside the MacBooks and MacBook Pros last month.

Hi,

Were the Macbooks updated?

s.

It could use a glass trackpad and a glass screen with black bezel, like the MacBook Pros! Or maybe just a glass trackpad (the MacBooks don't have a glass screen, so maybe the MBA won't either). I would like to see it redesigned a bit, the design looks a bit old since we're all so used to it by now and it hasn't changed at all since its release. I'm sure specs will be better but I can see that Apple isn't pushing the MBA as a high-spec machine but rather as a very portable, normal-spec laptop.

I find it hard to imagine buying any other laptop but the Air. My 24” iMac sits collecting dust because this tiny Air has all the power I need for my work. And I can pick it up with only one hand free. The extra portability really does matter.

I hope the delay means some significant changes of some kind or other. But I’d settle for more speed and buttonless trackpad!

Bring it on,

I travel constantly and I am damn sick of lugging my heavy Macbook Pro around, the iPad can't do zip that my Pro can do for work so its not a viable option.
I have been waiting for almost a year to buy a Air........ I will and I want to, as long as it's got some serious grunt, if it is a pisspoor upgrade (lets hope not) I guess I am stuck lugging, then again there always is Hacintosh and the Vaio Z.........
