The only thing stopping me from getting an Air is that I feel the better brightness and color gamut on the Pro is worth the extra $200.

Well, my rMBP early 2015 is worth $460 in trade, but my processor is technically faster than this one.

And you have a better keyboard. Oh and don’t forget you still have the Apple logo that lights up?! It’s a keeper. Well that’s what I keep telling myself. I have a 2018 MBP. I hated the feel of the keyboard. Never had any issues with it. Just didn’t like the feel. Sold it and went back to the 2015. I do miss USB-C but I do love MagSafe.

I still don't get the hate for the Touch Bar. I like it. Especially with Better Touch Tool. To each their own I guess.
Why look down at your keyboard to interact with your screen?

Why display controls that could be represented in a toolbar or inspector on-screen?

Why lose the Escape key, one of the most valuable keys?

Why pretend that remapping Esc to Caps Lock is viable?

Just to be clear (because the article and comments are a bit confusing) the updated MacBook Air retains the physical function keys; it does NOT have the Touch Bar. (The low-end MacBook Pro now has the Touch Bar.)

Well I think this means no-scissor-mechanism-keyboard MBA in 2019 as predicted by Ming-Chi Kuo?!

Could there be two Air updates within 2 months? I doubt it. Maybe – just maybe – that means there'll be an additional smaller machine with an all-new design? (crossing fingers)

Picking one up and returning the “old” one. Student discount and selling the free Beats headphones to recover the costs is a better deal to me.

Seeing as most users will need 256 GB, even the $1,099 is basically a lie at this point. Greedy son-of-a-bitch company.

The number of companies out there selling $1000+ computers with 256GB is sickening. Apple is one of them. I'm sorry let me rephrase that (upon searching) - the amount of companies selling $1000+ computers with 128GB is sickening. I didn't think I'd find any.

I will crawl back into my hole now.

Wouldn't you rather it be included instead of being out of luck if something went bad?

That's what the normal warranty is for. IMHO, this is Apple basically saying, "Here's a new computer, and we're pretty sure you're going to have keyboard issues..."

Funny, I'd think people would be complaining if it wasn't on there.

No, it's Apple saying that you have an extended window that if something is to go wrong they'll take care of it. If anything I would imagine this means they have a lot of confidence in it. I can't imagine they want people bringing computers in for repair.

Having to constantly purchase Lenovo’s for work (which are great), I agree. Starting at 128 is just nonsense these days.

You're not the first person I've seen bring up Kuo's prediction for the return of scissor keys. Every piece I've read on the subject stated the scissor keys were part of a predicted refresh in 2020. Since we are still most assuredly in 2019, there should be no surprise as to the lack of scissor-style keyboards. o_O

(Honestly, where has reading comprehension gone? What do they teach kids in school these days?)

The verbiage in that article is wrong. It's the fourth iteration of the butterfly keyboard. Google around. 3rd gen was 2018. 4th gen is the keyboard on the pro's just released and now the 2019 Air. Some kind of subtle change to the membrane.
The mere fact that the average consumer knows (or feels they have to know) about keyboard generations in a laptop is a huge red flag, and puts the lie to the quality of a product that should "just work."

Since this is now a True Tone display would the NITS be higher ? Brighter ?
It doesn’t seem to be a improved display, you can compare specs vs the MBP over here https://www.apple.com/mac/compare/

Truetone is probably just the sensor plus software.

Still a limited colour gamut, or has the screen been upgraded to be the same as the MBP?
Still sRGB and no P3 yet. Can’t find the specs on the product site, but it’s mentioned in the comparison table.

I’m 1-2 days out of being able to get the student promo with cheaper prices and headphones. Bought my air 16 days ago...

Always have the BEST timing

But sad about the MacBook - the most beautiful, elegant device they had. The writing seemed to be on the wall for it for a while though. The new MacBook Air was obviously intended to replace it. Now it has. :-(

You have got to be joking. That 12" Macbook was a terrible piece of trash with pathetic processor, very unreliable design, crap keyboard and puny single port. I've take a few apart and they were pretty badly built unlike the rest of Apple's lineup. Really, I'm glad it's gone.

It also seems Apple nixed the 12" MacBook. I can't find it anywhere on the store...

EDIT: there's likely still refurb models. I'm talking about new.
EDIT 2: yep, the 12" is discontinued.

Just remember, the 2017 MacBook was 20% faster under stress (video & photo editing) than the 2018 Airs in real world tests, due to thermal limiting on the Airs.

This anomaly could not stand. An upgrade to MacBook would have left the Airs in the dust, and despite the higher price, it would have embarrassed the ‘everyone loves MacBook Air’ (buy an Air) strategy Apple is pushing. Tough luck if your student ever has to submit a video!

Pundits really shouldn’t be giving the Air a free pass if its performance is so limited, but they know that following Apple’s PR line will endear them to Apple.

I never had problems with my 2015 MacBook and it takes a pounding, including a lot of photo and video editing. I don’t know what you have to do to stuff the keyboard, eat every meal and snack off it????
