If speculating on MacBook Pro having Blu-Ray drives could the extra port be HDMI? HDMI is equal or better then the DVI. Since they are using NVIDIA motherboard and chipsets why not be HDMI since that option is on ALL new motherboards from NVIDIA. That would be nice to have 1080p with 6-8 channel of uncompressed audio through one port! Apple-TV is currently the only Apple product with HDMI. I say HDMI!

This exectly I was thinking. HDMI would fit perfectly it to the MBP line.
Another idea I had was the apple remote could probably fit in there too.
It could just be a slot for the remote. The are so many thing apple could do with that port( or slot ). It could also be some new port that you can switch out. Example: Say you want FW, you just push in some kind of card that has with a FW port on it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

shut up and wait until tuesday. Goddamn you'd think some people had their families abducted the way they're acting. "No, it's not possible, not my FIREWIRE!". Go buy a mac that's actually good for video editing and stop depending on your plastic MB. Oh, and don't buy crappy external hard drives that only use FW 400.
Stick with your iPhone and let us worry about our Macs. :)

Well this sucks. My LaCie external HD is only FireWire. How am I supposed to connect that to the new Macbook (if Apple doesn't support FireWire through Ethernet)??

Apple is making a big mistake if they do leave out Firewire.

I understand product differentiation, but I also understand that the Macbook outsells the Macbook Pro 20/1, and all those Firewire users are not going to spend an extra grand for a Macbook Pro just to get Firewire.

With the supposed new pricing schemes, there might not be a grand separating the low-end MBP from the MB.

Why the hell is USB so much more popular than FireWire?
Cheaper and pushed by intel resulting in a massive PC presence resulting in everybody creating USB peripherals resulting in USB wins.

Worse Is Better always works.
I haven't read all the responses, but like I've been saying in much older posts, I think Apple got rid of the Ethernet port.
Well you're still wrong.
I don't really use it on my MacBook, and you can get the Ethernet to USB adaptor they have for the MBA anyways.
Adapter is 10/100 versus gigabit and burns through CPU while native eth doesn't. Furthermore eth is a requirement in much more places and many more settings than FW.
That first port is NOT a magsafe port
It is. You're delusional.
If Apple can do FW over the Ethernet RJ-45, fine, but will this allow the new spec of 3.2 Gigabit Firewire.
No. FW over rj45 is FW-S800T which -- as its name implies -- is FireWire 800.

Yeah all of the cheaper interfaces use USB...
my point is that firewire is heavily used in media... Especially for someone tracking drums. They need the firewire hard drive as well.

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree, only a fool would depend on a USB interface for more than just a bit of editing, I was just having a dig at Digis lack of support about fixing the Core Audio issues that they have with their interfaces at the moment (well for the past year or so).

And that dig comes from me having to use a Digi interface to do some editing at home, I wish they'd open their LE platform at least to allow me to use an audio interface I choose (i.e my OTU 828 Mk3), rather than their dodgy ones. And there's no way I'd go for the 003 for a bit of editing, seems like overkill really.

it would be sad to see FW go just to save a few bucks. i dare say it's rather an un-apple-like move. it's rather perplexing, then, for apple to take two steps forward incorporating an nvidia integrated GPU (which i hear is 2x faster than intel's offering) and an aluminum body in the upcoming MB's and then take a step back by foregoing FW???? the idea that this and that person will not need FW is a ridiculous argument. because this and that person is a non "Pro" user? the fact is that FW is more reliable than USB when it comes to streaming video and other highspeed data devices. do you think a nonpro user, or your average consumer, will not mind if their video has dropped frames after capturing it through usb? and then find that when they are editing in iMovie that it's dropping more frames because their external hdd device is also connected through USB? not to bash USB or anything, but, i just don't see why "pro" products should have the convenience and reliability of FW and the average consumer be given to the dogs when this average consumer might also want to edit video once in a while. so, there.

one word: DisplayPort
one hint: references to a mini-displayport built for apple by a taiwanese company
another hint: when was the last time a mac notebook had two different display ports? Cause we know that the new macbooks already have one near the USB ports.
i dare say it's rather an un-apple-like move
Un apple-like? The kind of un apple-like of not providing mini-dvi->DVI or mini-dvi->VGA with the macbooks? Or not bundling free remotes with the macbooks anymore? Or not giving any kind of dock or dock adapter in the 3G iphone bundle? That kind of un apple-like?

I strongly think there going to be 15" Macbooks -Non Pros...

in that case we ll have
-entry level semi plastic macbook-no firewire
-full Alu Macbook 15" firewire..
-macbook pro full alu full port equiped
that s why we have 12 items rumors....

is anybody thinks the same?:p

They actually designed it in 1391, headed by Steve Jobs Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, but couldn't get the spec finalised until 1394!

They had to wait for it to be officially sanctioned by the Church. A group of bishops had to inspect the specification and rule out any possibility of witchcraft.

I never heard any rumors about a 15'' Macbook, and neither saw a leak showing one.

People are just having wet dreams. And they beleive it could happen...

I sure as hell don't think the same, but your ideas are shared by several here.

Is it just me or is that one covered with tape an iRdA Port? They normally come with protective plastic over them...

Maybe the new MacBook has USB 3.0 (is that even out?).

What about the newest FireWire (I can't remember if it's 1600 or 3200).. seems kind of silly to eliminate FireWire from the MacBook.

I know i could be wrong but on the 15 inch i think it personally goes power, ethernet, usb, usb, FIREWIRE 800, two audio ports, then DVI

i think the DVI i could be wrong about for the size but, i dont see how that cant be it.

I didnt see the 13 inch other side so I dont know if there will be ports on the otherside or what. I know the drive is, but either way they could possibly put the mini DVI on that side. I dont see an HDMI going anywhere since the 15 inch model doesnt have an obvious spot for it.

I guess we will find out tommorow.

You forgot to mention one more thing.

Firewire is more expensive to put on a board than USB. If they do kill it, it is for a reason. How many people use the SCSI connector on their laptops or dekstops anymore. Firewire has a life cycle, we are just lucky enough to be living through it.

HDMI port FTW

Yeah Firewire is a tad more expensive to physically implement. Buuuut from what I understand the real reason Firewire is "more expensive" is due to the per-port license fee that manufacturers pay to Apple when FW ports are used (anyone care to confirm/deny this? I am too tired to go on a fact-verification search right now).

I bet Apple could get away with removing FW from MacBooks. Using the audio interface example: There are *plenty* of USB2 audio interfaces that work for light audio work (podcasts, garage band, etc etc...). However, I don't know of any audio professionals who run higher level audio apps with Firewire interfaces on MacBooks. Usually they use MacBook Pros.

We'll see.

PS: I have no need for HDMI. I do need eSATA.

Peanuts! FireWire costs 25c a system to licence. THAT IS RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP!

This exectly I was thinking. HDMI would fit perfectly it to the MBP line.

Odds and ends:

1. HDMI is possible, but so is Displayport, as they both have the same footprint. Displayport would be the better long-term choice.

2. If it's either of those, then the rumored mini-displayport beside the usb would be wrong, thus renewing the mystery about what that port is (and I think it will be video out).

3. The taped-up hole could be a docking port (my bet at the moment) for the rumored dock. But few seem to think this is likely.

4. It *could* be esata, which would be great, but why would they do that when they have FW3200, which is bus-powered? So many more devices, including bus-powered external drives, could use this. Esata needs a separate power source. That's so old-school.

Unless... that small hole next to the taped-up hole is a special power source for esata. Then Apple could sell their own proprietary cables for their new, "powered" esata. Or they could allow for two cables to run to the esata device: data through the esata cable and power from the power output beside the esata port.

But again, with FW3200, why bother?

I think it's a docking port also, so it slides nicely into the back of the new cinema displays.
