Apple seems to think you need an appointment for more "customer service" at their stores now.

I just bought one without an appointment. However, they are not set up in the Apple stores yet. The sales person had to go in the back to get a demo for me to try out. It also took some convincing on my part to see it. They said all the new models will be out for viewing on Thursday.

I asked the guy how to get iwork from my imac to new macbook and he said to use my firewire port. NOT kidding! Then he caught him self and said, oh that model does not have that. You can use your ethernet connetion. I am not the most computer savy, but this all seemed to rediculous.

They still got my money though. Love every apple product i have bought. imac & iphone 3g.

Loss of Firewire no surprise

I bet that less than 20-30% of Windows laptops purchased these days come with Firewire. Firewire is well on its way to extinction in the consumer market. If you must have Firewire Apple still sells the old low end white MacBook.

As for HDMI doesn't Apple have to pay royalties? I think DisplayPort doesn't require royalties.

Apple lost a golden opportunity to lower prices and give their competition headaches. An across the board $200 or $300 price reduction would have created a big stir.

i only have used firewire once on an old ipod mini my sister gave me and i gave to my little sister (thats a mouthful) and it doesn't make a difference for me, sorry. maybe in the future i will need it. but for now, im happy with buying my macbook!:p

Apple has never competed with pricing. And they never will.

Have you called 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask to file a consumer complaint? I did, it took 2 minutes. The consumer relations rep told me that they are getting hammered there today because of the lac of FireWire. She said it perplexed her as to why Apple didn't include FireWire in the new Macbook.

I think that voicing our umbrage by calling Apple is the best move.

I left a comment at the MacBook Feedback link:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html

I will consider calling the number above as well...

another thing i noticed...

since the whole monitor side panel is glass... if/when you open the macbook, wont you have a fingerprint on the top of the glass Every time you open it up?

correct me if i am wrong.

That's very likely. I'm surprised it doesn't come with a microfiber cloth. hah

Good Job Apple

Great refresh - seriously all the whiners make me sick. These laptops are way better then any of the competition can offer.

In terms of the glossy vs matte - I have all three variants if you like with my current Macbook (glossy), MacBook Pro (Matte) and my iMac 24" - Glass glossy. The glossy display on the MacBook is subject to reflection and finger prints etc but overall I much prefer the iMacs extremely bright and vibrant display - I believe the brightness combined with glass make a great combination.

At least give them a chance and go see them in the flesh so to speak before making asinine and uninformed comments.

Quoted for the truth. :)

agreed.

i, too, have one of the new imacs and love the display.. the only time i notice a reflection is when the background is all black and even then it is pretty minimal.

unless you people work outside in the sun 8 hours a day, i see no reason to complain about the glossy screen.

i have already purchased one of the new MBP's and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive, i have no doubt that it will exceed my expectations.

How about commenting on specific "asinine and uninformed comments" instead
of making sweeping generalizations? No doubt the new MacBooks are awesome,
however, I can import DV footage with my 8-year old, 400 Mhz iMac DV (Summer 2000),
and yet I can't do this simple task with the latest and greatest MacBook? Uh, hello?

My first thoughts: I was somewhat upset at the lack of a matte screen, as that was one of the big reasons I wanted a Mac. I was also upset about having to buy a display port adapter. Skimming through the messages I see others that are very upset about some of the changes. There are always disappointments to be taken with the joys of new technology releases.
My only real concerns are the strength of the glass components (screen and trackpad). I am very careful with my laptops, but they do get lugged around everywhere with me. I hope this MacBook Pro is as durable as my old consumer HP.

On the good side of things I’m really thrilled about the two graphics processors in the Pro, although I have read that you have to log out to switch from one to the other. I can live with that I guess. I can’t wait to use the new trackpad, have Bluetooth to HotSync my Palm, and most of all I really can’t wait for my copy of Adobe CS4!
I placed my order for a new MacBook Pro and now that I’m broke (literally – until payday), I can’t wait until it comes! I really hope it was money well spent!

*sits impatiently waiting for packages to come*

It's all over now.....

the new macbook/pro design is a piece of sh... it looks like all other notebooks that are out on the market. the soul of the macbook fromerly known as powerbook is completely thrown into the rubbish. who ever decided on this design is a dum..as.! delete the black curtain "around" the screen, make the keyboard silver again, add a FW400 and 800 either to the macbook and the pro! and please let me have a nonglossy screen! this is so sad! i'm really disappointed! of course i can think about the other new inventions, yes, they seem to be great. but please please please put them in s.th. like the old design!!! oh no!!! very very very sad!

In all honesty, the design should persistent with the rest of the product line. All aluminum and glass. It might help you actually see it in person.. I went to my Apple Store and boy is that thing a beauty. I bought one. I'm a happy camper.

I really like the new design of the laptops,

I have an aluminum iMac, and it has the same look

If I ever feel the need to go mobile in the near future, I will definitely be getting a MacBook.

Eh ? Maybe you should take a look at the camcorder market nowadays - increasingly USB is the connector of choice. In fact with the increased number of devices capable of recording direct to DVD or SD the matter of Firewire becomes even less of an issue at the consumer level (which the MacBook is targeted at).

Uh, hello ?

tell me one good reason if it is not only money that something has to be persisten with soem product line. it was apple that was differnet from other computers. now they are the same. have a look at a toshiba tecra, it looks the same. the powerbook and the the old line, yes, they were different!!! thats it! and not to talk about that missing firewire.

I am glad that Apple does not listen to you when they go design the most advanced laptop today. Have you seen the manufacturing video posted by Apple?

In any case, I am not sure why you complain so much. If you like the previous model so much, you still can go ahead and purchase it for less money than last week. Where have you lost any thing?

If you need FW so bad, go can still go ahead and purchase a MBP that has one.

If you do not know what to do with your money, you can always donate something to third world country causes that hope to get a $100 laptop! :) You can purchase about 10 of those for the price of a macbook.

i guess a triangle shaped yellow/pink notebook would serve you perfect.

Let's be real here. This has got to be one of the best products Apple has ever made. The glossy displays are amazing. The glare makes it look even more attracting (and on a side note you get used to it after a few hours). No firewire? Not a problem. It's for the professional products only. This is the best thing Apple has done in years. I'm buying my new MacBook today and I'm going to have one heck of a good time. :)

I'm with you! Headed to Stockton store in SF after I land at SFO! :D:):p

Actually you are simi-right there. It looks a bit like the other notebooks!!!! Egad! But it looks amazing neither-the-less. I love it so much and I will get one this christmas. And I don't care about firewire!
