This is what the relevant extract from the website says:

"On Saturday 1 May 2006, at 1pm, there will be a celebration of the thirty-year history of Apple Computer, starting with the orginal Apple I through to the latest Intel-based Macs of today, along with other memoriable products like the LaserWriter, Newton and, of course, the iPod, Nicholas Pyers will give a series of presentations remembering this remarkable history using Apple's own print and video advertisements. [18 Apr 2006]"

Saturday 1 May???? I know that Australia is in a different time zone but this is ridiculous :)

More than a different time zone, it is across the dateline. That means this would be on Friday in the USA. Hmmm.

Is it possible they're holding off for a really long time, and they'll release the MacBooks with Merom simultaneously as a MacBook Pro Rev B with Merom as well?

Doubtful - I don't think it is in Apple's best interests to wait that long before refreshing the iBook line.

Do you think they'll put Merom in the MacBook by the end of this year? Or will the MacBook always be one chipset behind the MacBook Pro?

For product differentiation reasons alone, yes, Apple will probably keep the procs not on par with each other. (It would be nice to see though!)

But yeah, since Merom will be brand new and the chip will no doubt cost more than the Yonahs initially, expect Apple to plop the Meroms in the MBPs and keep the Core Duos in the MacBook to keep costs down and margins up. ;)

I keep coming back and I keep realizing that noone here has a clue when this thing is coming..I hope you guys are right and it happens in the next 2 weeks...but I;m not holding my breath. Has apple ever released a new product 2/3 weeks after they just announced a new one
(the macbook pro17")..I can;t see them releasing 2 laptops that close together...although I sure hope they do.. IF it is going to be a while yet, I hope they give us some indication..IF this doesn't happen until later in june..i'm out and done with apple...only because they are not giving anyone any indication. The reality is, that in todays world people are really relying on there computers and eveyone must make choices...ah choice.

Apple will use the lowest clocked Merom (when it ships) for the Macbook, because it provides 20% more performance per watt than the current Core chips, and for the Macbook, battery life will be an important consideration. Differentiation will be by clock speed, screen resolution, HD size and speed, GPU, and installed/maximum RAM.

Of course, the first Macbooks will likely ship before Merom does, so they will have Core Duo chips.

Apple have never really given anything away! Theres the usual hints, and Macbooks are in production, its just knowing when. Good things come to those who wait. So if you cant wait, buy a Windoze, then macbook comes out, then you feel crap , cause it is really a matter of weeks now. Just hold out that little bit more, it will pay off.

Ad campaign to start next week

From the notes that came out of Apple's shareholder meeting (see AI and TS), SJ mentioned a TV ad campaign to launch next week...

What could be better than new Macbooks to lead up this TV campaign!?

Bring it on I say!!

that's tomorrow. i sure hope something does

yeah i read that too. OOO getting exciting now, although, im not putting my hopes up =\

I just dont know if to buy one when they come out, or to wait for 64bit and 10.5 ok, 10.5 will most likely be before 64bit gets in them, but, one can hope

I read somewhere there is something going on on the 28th of april?
If anything gets announced in the next few days, hats off to Apple for largely keeping it under wraps. Details have leaked out, but on the whole we have had no indication on when it will get announced.

Also, if the ad campaign will be for the MacBook, let's hope it's a musical number with lots of colourful MacBooks, (similar to old iMac ads). I couldn't stand another Intel in Mac ad. Too corny.

yeah, that's true. but it seems that 64bit would benefit the MBP's more than the macbooks. my opinion anyway

yeah i know, but apple will do it soon enough, im just wondering if they'd dive in the deep end rather than drag it out any longer. I guess it depends on how long Intel want to make 32 bits chips when the rest of their line is near enough 64bit *or so im told*

With the new ad campaign it could very well be for a new product, macbook/ipod/mbp?, or mabye a new ad campaign about their switch to intel?

those ads are too intel. They have been using showing the chips being mass produced or computer entrails for years. aaaaaaaaaaarghh! (as Charlie Brown would say)
