I don't think the 2 posters you were replying to actually meant they want Apple to produce an exact replacement for the original 12" PB - more likely that they're expecting Apple to come up with a 13" MB Pro, equivalent to the old 12" but updated, with a slightly better spec than the (rumored and hoped-for) 13" 'iBook replacement'.
Like IscariotJ, I think the 12" PB was a big seller (maybe selling as many as the 17" PB ???) and I would think it strange if Apple knocked it on the head, as it would leave a big gap between the top of the MacBook range and the bottom of the MBPro range.

Exactly. Having a powerful, small laptop is important to many people. It's not going to go away. 🙂

Why would Apple intentionally disable the dual-link DVI output? Isn't that standard on the X1600/X1400? I doubt they would do it just because iBooks currently aren't able to do spanning.
Haven't they done this sort of thing in the past with the original iMacs. I know I had to hack mine to get dual display instead of just mirroring.
Also, the slower processor / smaller screen won't add up to $500 difference in price. The Expresscard/34 slot, RAM, and backlit keyboard features being left out would make it closer, however.
I agree. The processor, smaller screen, smaller HD, etc. are the obvious spec's that people will point to and say "this is not a $500 difference", but the nice case, backlit keyboard, etc. are where they get people to pay a premium for the PowerBooks vs. the iBook (soon to the be the MBP vs the MB.)
I still think we're looking at two separate models - the 13.3" MacBook Pro (with ATI Radeon and 1.83 - 2.16ghz Core Duo) and a 13.3" MacBook (with the items you mentioned and integrated graphics).
Where did the 13.3" number come from that everyone is so convinced of? Is it the same places that keep getting the release dates wrong? Is there no such thing as a 12" or 14" widescreen LCD?
The 17" isn't much more expensive, I heard, because it's significantly larger, which means Apple has to spend less effort getting the smallest components.
Assuming the 13.3" size is right. What about a 13.3" or 15.4" MacBook. With the 15.4 coming in at $1699 basically, and BTO to match the MacBook Pro coming in at more than the $2000 the 15.4" Pro costs?

*cough*Apple Event on Thursday*cough*

Invites arriving for analysts and members of the press for day before store opening in NYC.

Didn't somebody post that invite here, like, yesterday? But, yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about this one. Announce it the day before and then have hordes of people coming into check out the Macbook. Just pleaaaaasse make sure there are enough to go around. 😱

Don't think so. This isn't the one of the wire-frame cube, this is brand new. AI has only just picked it up. The cube one was for the friday, this is for the thursday before the store opens.

Man, if they release the MacBook on Thursday can you imagine the crowd at the NY store - especially if they have them in stock ready to go.....especially if there's a refreshed iPod.....and they have those in stock too.

Big, big exposure for Apple. Huge exposure.

Good Points, now you have me thinking this is possible.
But, Based on everything I have seen here and learnt, I am still very sceptical about this being a product launch.

Possible preview of MacBook Colors?

Has anyone seen this companies new colored casings for the Mac Mini? Maybe the MacBook's will be coming in colors like these.

I would have to agree, what would be the point of having a press conference the day before? Just to remind the press about what they will see on Friday? It doesnt make sense. They must be releasing somthing. We all hope that it will be the Macbook, but could it be an ipod?

Again I stress, why call the press out just to give them a hint of what they will all see for themselves on Friday (being the impressive store) Surely they must want to get people excited about what lies within the impressive store...ie a Macbook?

The 13.3" screen has been the rumor for a long time. It's because of those reports that say Asustek is making them. It could be completely false.

However, in PC laptops, 13.3" is becoming a very popular model, so that's probably another reason people are guessing that's what Apple will do.

There definitely are 12"/14" widescreen LCDs, and I think they could be impressive. Everyone on the boards seems to think 13.3" is a given, so I've just been rolling with it.

Here's a guess.. Steve will be at the Thursday event to introduce the new MacBooks... Bono will show up to help introduce the Red iPod and talk about the cause it supports. The next day, MacBooks and Red iPods will be flying out the door. Apple will be able to make headlines two days in a row with a major three-pronged marketing push (including the new NYC store). Again, just a guess.

To be honest, 12" or 13.3" widescreen, I'm not that bothered, as long as they make a proper replacement for the 12" PB, in addition to an iBook replacement. When I bought my PB G4, there wasn't that much difference in price compared to the 15", yet I still preferred the smaller form factor.

Looking over Intel's site, I notice that they are listing the L2300/L2400 Core Duo's ( 1.5Ghz/1.66Ghz ). I'm sure they would be suitable for the MacBook ( though I don't know what the cost of the chips are ), while the MBP could start with T2300 Core Duo ( 1.66Ghz ), though I don't know if the performance difference would be sufficient. I even wouldn't be that bothered about having the T2500 ( 2.0Ghz ) in it, the T2400 ( 1.83Ghz ) would be quick enough, and would give enough justification for the 15.4" MBP.

Looks like a clip from that video posted a few pages ago on this thread...
Where are the ports? In the back?

Besides it says ATI Radeon x1600 w/64mb.. Do they even make such a thing? I thought the lowest x1600 would be 128

The other details are plausible but....

Well if anyone saw the mockup they would no that a macintosh does NOT, come with two mouse buttons...hehe🙄

As for the GPU...well I never knew the 9550 could have only 32MB but it does. I think the whole X1600 64MB could be possible...in an Apple sense!

Not yet. Apple will surely innovate on this front, creating one button that can detect right or left clicks - or can be configured to behave as a single button. They are going after the PC crowd full steam ahead now. There is no way they can continue to live in a one button mouse/trackpad lala land 😎

I wuold love too see the "button" for the liek trackpad have some kind of sensors or duel button thing liek the mighty mouse. That can be switch from single to double in the prefs

I'm no computer geek, but it's obvious to me from examining past specs of iBook vs. Powerbook, and now seeing where the Powerbook (Macbook Pro *cough*) is, that the new iBook (Macbook *cough* ) will have the "Core Duo" along with 64mb of non-integrated video ram. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. All Macs (except the Minis) are "premium" computers, and so the new iBooks will be a logical evolution of the iBook G4, just as the (ahem) Macbook Pro's continue where the PowerBook G4's left off. "Cheap" is reserved for the Mini which is designed to get people to switch to Mac at a low price.

BTW besides the Mini I realize there may also be eMacs out there as another economy Mac but I'm not sure if those are still sold.

To get it on the news the night before it opens, and to get it into the papers that morning to inform the public what they can see on Friday. Remember, not everybody is hanging on Apple's every move.

Yes they do. Mighty Mouse Is A Two Button Configurable Mouse. And the thumb button on MacBooks as well as all Aluminum PowerBooks and all G4 iBooks with iScroll2 installed can be configured to right click when you have two fingers on the trackpad or by tapping once on the trackpad.

iScroll2 is a modified trackpad driver that adds two-finger scrolling and right clicking capabilities to supported pre-2005 PowerBooks and iBooks on OS X 10.3 and higher. Supported models include aluminum PowerBooks introduced from 2003 to 2004 as well as all G4 iBooks. 🙂

MacBooks Next Tuesday - the deal

This is what will happen, 2 books will be released one Macbook and one Macbook Pro both smaller profiles eg the 13+inches as anticipated. a campaign will be generated to push them as a choice for smaller being better and the choice is yours. - Steve will go to NYC to open the store and show case the books and more. Creative1

The setup I think (hope) we'll get:

Note that everything in bold is customisable.

MacBook £590 inc VAT

Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz (Core Duo 1.5 +£55, 1.66 +£80, 1.83 +£110)

512MB DDR2 533MHz (PC4200) Memory (1GB +£50, 1.5GB +£70, 2GB +120.)

13.3-inch TFT display with 1280x800/720 resolution
or 15.4-inch TFT display with 1280x800/720 or 1440x900/810 resolution.

Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics 128MB (ATI Radeon x1300 128MB +£80, ATI Radeon x1400 128MB/256MB +£140 / +£180.)

60GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive (60GB 7200RPM +£30, 80GB 5400RPM +£20, 80GB 7200RPM +£50, 100GB 5400RPM +£50.)

Integrated 24xCDRW/8x DVD Combo Drive (Integrated 8xDVD+/- RW Drive +£30)

AirPort Extreme + Bluetooth 2.0

Front Row with Apple Remote

MagSafe and MagClose

Now that... would be heaven. Customisability is too overlooked. Dell is the only major company who actually offers a decent amount of it.
