new machines DO NOT QUALIFY for free iPod

i do not know if you all just like to believe what you want to belive or what, but did anyone bother to actually look at the rebate coupon for the free iPod? maybe you should. it lists, very clearly, on the second page SPECIFIC desktop and laptop configurations that will qualify for the free iPod package. You should notice that it says, very clearly, on the very first line of the fine print:

"You must purchase qualifying products with Apple’s Education Individual discount from June 5, 2006, through September 16, 2006."

you should finally note, that future, unrealeased versions of machine with merom in them DO NOT QUALIFY.

done. move on.

This is good news for future Macbook owners. I'm interested in when the iMac will get Conroe. A friend of mine is switching from Windows and wants the iMac but is waiting for Conroe in the iMac. I only hope they go with the desktop processor in the iMac and not Merom since he's not interested in the mobile processor in his desktop.

Well, hopefully the iMac will be updated sooner than the portables. Conroe is out and available in quantities now where as Merom won't be as available in quantities until the end of this month.

I'm waiting for a Core Duo iMac. I've got XP which is triping with worms.

Sorry, I meant to say its 7th October the UK deal ends, not 16th. I dont care bout the iPod though, i'd rather wait for the better Macbook. But, the merom Macbooks will not be NEW models will they, they'l just be updates? Or will they? lol

So if the entire range was updated to Core 2 the offer would be terminated? I'm not sure about that one, but if true, it changes my plans somewhat.

i do not know how i can make this any clearer:

YES!

there is a chance, (and in my opinion, zero chance), of them adding new machines to the rebate after they are announced, but as of now new stuff does not qualify.

Well, they added the Mac Pro to the rebate...so it would be weirdly inconsistent to not add a new MacBook Pro configuration.

considering that meroms will (theoretically) be out for only 5 days before the end of the rebate? i think it would make perfect sense for them not to add them in. Mac Pros will be out for more than a month before the rebate ends.

But a month before the offer ends in some other countries for macbooks and iMacs (if they are updated early September).

I think I'd better ring Apple before I buy.

New Mac fan

I am a new guy here. Someone just took me out of the box. I hope they send my warranty in. LOL

I am definitely going to switch from PCs (yuck) to a MacBook Pro, but I am waiting for an insurance settlement to do so, and will also wait for the Merom version.

I do plan on running boot camp and Windows XP Pro, simply because that is the only way I can use DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2007. I have found Mac versions of just about every other software I am running in Windows.

Needless to say, I am sick of spending 3/4 of my time with Windows incompatibility and virus, trojan, spyware, and worm issues. I have been doing due diligence on the Macbook Pro for almost 2 months now, including going to Mac Authority, and CompUSA to put their floor units through torture tests. LOL

I am a university student (at 62 years old) and need a really dependable computer to study on, and Mac is it. :)

Yonah supports 4 GiB of RAM

sorry if ive missed it but there doesnt seem to be much discussion as to the possibility of the mbp getting a serious ram upgrade, I just dont see 2gigs cutting it anymore, specially running side by side os's alone, God forbid working in photoshop at the same time.

any chance we see it upped to 4gigs? is there room for it w/out a case redesign?
The other companies that sell Yonah laptops support 2 GiB SO-DIMMs, for a total of 4 GiB of RAM with two 2 GiB SO-DIMMs.

These use the same chipsets that Apple uses, so unless Apple's firmware blocks the use of 2 GiB SO-DIMMs it should work today - and it certainly should work with a firmware update.

Has your "diligence" included some time at http://www.macfixit.com ?

Some people have Mac problems, and wouldn't say "really dependable" to describe their systems.

YMMV

I went there and read it. I will make double sure when I get mine that all of these issues are discussed and addressed before I plunk the money down...however...the store I will be dealing with is one I frequent quite often and I have been talking extensively with the technicians concerning what nature of problems they are seeing come through the doors.

Wow, thanks for that info, that would be hot!

It would make absolutely no sense to refuse the rebate. Consider that there are plenty of people out there who have never been at Macrumors, who have not the slightest idea what the difference between a Yonah and Merom is, much less the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. If Apple gave a rebate on say a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core Duo and refused to gave the same rebate on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo there would be lawsuits for false and misleading advertising.

Somewhere here on Macrumors there was a post explaining a bit what is going on: There are two GB SO-DIMMs available (and larger capacity chips for the Mac Pro as well), but they are extremely expensive at the moment, so Apple thinks there will be very little demand, so the machines are not extensively tested with these RAM chips, and if it is not tested then Apple won't advertise it as supported.

We can be quite certain that Apple hasn't blocked these larger chips in any way, most likely someone has put some effort in to maximise the chances that they are working without problems. It is just untested by Apple.

well that sounds ok, I would just feel more comfortable shelling out for a new mbp knowing that im not maxed out @2gigs of ram.

it not making sense has absolutly nothing to do with them doing it or not. i am pretty sure (tho not 100% positive) that in the past hardware that has been annouced very near the end of a rebate like this has not been included - i remember because i was going to base an apple purchase on a similar deal that they would not honor with new hardware.

we will see september 16th.
