This will only tell you what color depth your graphics card driver is reporting to the browser. All the MBP screens are just 6-bit panels which dither to get the required color combination.

Oh thank you, I din't know that. I tried it on a 1999 PC (!) and got 32 bit, on a 2009 Mac mini with a crappy display getting 24 bit, and 24 bit also here on the 15" MBP. I have the same panel as you, 9CBB or LP154WP4-TLA1 by LG Philips.

Are you quite satisfied with your display? Or maybe are you going to exchange it hoping to get a Samsung?

I'm asking another test to everybody: please tell me if in this picture http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php#gradient-h.png you do experience any banding, especially in the areas fading to black. I do.
As I wrote yesterday, I also see it within the Exposé "spotlight shadow" if on a solid dark colored background. Dunno if it's normal.

Isn't it time for the MacBook "PRO" buyers to get what they pay for? Wouldn't one expect at least a BTO option to buy a nice IPS display for the MBP? I mean, why not offer an IPS display for an extra $200? I know it would suck to pay $200 more, but pros need a top quality machine. I would pay for BTO options no matter how ridiculous the price seemed if it gave me the ultimate Mac notebook.

Why cannot Apple get the display right? This is something that has been in Mac notebooks forever, and they're still dealing with these crap displays all of the time. I have been through it with the MacBook Air too. I went through three of them before I got one that didn't have obvious horizontal lines across it.

We deserve better when we're paying this much for Macs. Most of the time I try to forget about these threads, but a quick visit to the MBP forum reminds me exactly what we have to deal with, IT'S A LOTTERY!

It really is disgraceful!

Apple just replaced my 9CB7 with a 9CBB - it's a vasty better screen IMO

9CBB (manufacturer: 610)
----
Pixels: perfect
Bleed: very little
Uniformity of backlight: actually very very good for a mbp
Color: great out of the box; no out-of-gamut colors
Yellow tint: none
Viewing angle: normal for a TN
Brightness: less than the 9CB7, but still very bright

So... finally, I'm happy. Very happy. Thanks apple!

I have another silly question (sorry):

Watching this png image http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z258/donut_100/gradissue.png do you notice any horizontal banding on your display? I do, a lot.

I'm just trying to understand if this is normal and it's just Apple who is selling crappy displays on wonderful laptops, or if my 9CBB LG Display isn't working as it should.

ty;)

WOW.
On my MBP screen = several noticeable bands! Looks like a gel electrophoresis!
On my Eizo, its none.

Guess that really shows the limitations of a 6 bit screen.

After a couple of hours of usage tonight I'm starting to realise the backlight on my 9CBB screen is very much biased to the left - the left half of my screen is brighter than my right. This is much more annoying than any yellow tinge! I'll be asking for a replacement on Monday.

So Jof you are clearly happier with the 9CBB screen :)

Has anyone else seen both screens and can offer an opinion/comparison?

Glad to see you don't have the problem, maybe i can get a good one if i decide to return my MBP!

Thanks.

After years of following Mac Rumors it was time to sign up haha for it haha.

Right after the new MBP's came out I ordered one, getting it 4 weeks later, because of the vulcano there was some delay. High res AG 15".

Screen seemed fine to me, very bright. I was used to working on an old laptop so the screen was really stunned me! However some keys did not work well so I had it replaced. Stupid me did not check which screen it had before I put it back in the box.

Today received the new one, however there is clearly a difference in screens. On this one I have LP154WE3-TLB1.

I'm not a pro in screens, however even I can see some differences. The one on my first MBP was clearly brighter than the second one. Had no problem with the yellow tint, not with this one, nor with the first one. The viewing angle however on the LP154WE3-TLB1 (so the 2nd one) seems worse than the first MBP (I guess the Samsung?).

Did more of you compare the angle or the brightness?

When you mention viewing angles do you mean horizontal or vertical?

From people's comments in general across many threads I think we can sum this up as follows:

Samsung: panel is brighter - but may be over saturated (blues appear purple, whites appear violet - I remember this was also a complaint with the mid 2009 13" MBPs) ever after calibration, some complaints of poor color accuracy.

LG-Philips: panel produces more accurate colors but has poorer viewing angles and is slightly dimmer.

My MBP is _hopefully_ gonna arrive soon. Getting myself ready to cope with yellowish nightmares 90% people are having.

2k laptops with such issues, I'll never give up wandering about this.

I think the yellow tinge problem is real and it should not be present in a professional laptop. I have seen a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro at Future Shop without the yellow tint behind a i5 MBP with the same problem that i have.

For me it's a subtile difference in color but is there, and working in photoshop with black and white images and scrolling over the picture can tell the differences between the screen areas.

Here another image (You can compare the hue values between the top and bottom gray squares)

Really don't like to waste time in replacing, fixing, dating at the apple store.

Have a look at my 9CA3 on this page of the forum guys and see what you think...!?

It's quite difficult to tell from photographs. The bottom is definitely lighter than the top in your pictures - this is completely inevitable with TN TFTs though. This is not really what the problem is about. I'm finding the yellow tinge to be much more subtle and I imagine I would only be able to judge it if I was looking at the screen with my own eyes.

Some pictures of 17" 9CCF screen (I know thread is about 15ers but it seems to have morphed into a general Apple screen rant):

Light leakage from black background (not much):

Uniform light gray background (moire does not appear on screen obviously, camera sensor is out of sync):

The thing is, all the macbook pro's where i work (Currys, an electrical reseller) are not lighter at the bottom, or at least no where near as much! And they all had the 9CA4 (Samsung screens) oppose to my 9CA3 (LG-Phillips screen)

Do you know what i think it is... the top two 3rds of the 9ca3 screens are the LG part and the bottom 3rd is the Phillips part hahaha  though i will give phillips there due as i have an iPod dock that is made by phillips and it is very good in every way...

Fair enough. I don't think there are many of us who have been able to get direct comparisons so you may very well be right.

For the people who are waiting for replacement MBPs, when are they being delivered? I'm gonna call Apple and have a replacement sent out - but I'm going to try to get them to let me keep my current one until I receive the replacement so I can make a comparison between the two.
