Not a problem!

Honestly, i never expected the new MBP to do any decent gaming at that high resolution. If it cna game at 1680x1050, that is amazing in itself. Reason being that even SLI rigs struggle at times to play at 2560x1600.

I don't think I expected it either, but I was curious nonetheless. Like I said, sufficiently blown away that it came as closely as it did. As a self contained monster, it is a ferocious one. I'm more than happy with the purchase.

I tried. Catalyst 11.2 says that it wont support the hardware. it is from 2/15/2011... we might need to wait for the next one.

I had the same problem with my iMac (4850). Don't download the 90MBs package. Pick the small one which downloads the right drivers for you. That's how I got 11.2 on my iMac.

Try this one: http://support.amd.com/de/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

I hope it works the same way like it did for the iMac. Next week I'll test it myself.

why don't you install the demo on bootcamp and see what kind of performance you get?

i did download the leaked beta of crysis 2 (obviously has bugs..but very playable).

i played it on a gt330m 512mb mid2010 macbook pro i7 2.66ghz.

on 1440x900, gamer settings just like the guy on the youtube video.
i can see the fps and other infos on top right corner of the screen during gameplay and my fps varies from 19.6 to 25-28 max.

again, this is the beta full game and not the release demo (which i want to test but cannot find links ?! ;(

so i came with the following conclusion : macbook pro with 6750 are faster of course but not in a huuuge proportion (maybe 10-30% faster ?)

i still dont know if i should sell mine and get it, or just stick with mine since i am very happy with fps on general games like starcraft 2, battlefield 2, dead space 2, black ops and mirror's edge

what you guys think ?

Benchmarks

That's excellent.

Overclocked or stock settings?

Not only stock, you used Apple drivers it looks like! Yikes! Def. go download the official Calayst drivers from AMD directly, and then go get MSI Afterburner (both free). My stock 330m (2.8GHz i7 15" mid-2010, specs in signature) was around 5000 w/ Apple drivers, 5300-5500 w/ NVidia drivers, and a whopping 7500 overclocked to the max, all never getting above 75°C.

I'd love to see the 6750 overclocked and maxxed out in MSI Afterburner (or whatever its thermal max is).

there arent any drivers from AMD/ATI yet.

First of all, you need to post an actual fraps run. Watching the numbers means nothing. Mine showed 40 the whole time I played.

Comparing my scores to yours the new one is twice as fast.

My guess if your avg will be 20, min 10, high 40. Maybe lower.

I had asked several pages ago if anyone had compared the performance of the high-end 15" model to an i5 iMac with a 4850. Now that I have my MacBook Pro in-hand, I've done this testing on my own. Here are the results:

i5 iMac (4850/8GB's of Ram): 11193 (at defaults)
15" i7 (6750/8GB's of Ram): 9653 (at defaults)

(Please note: the i5 iMac has upgraded drivers installed; the MacBook Pro does not)

While the MacBook Pro doesn't perform well enough for me to cannibalize the iMac, it's a fairly staggering result.

Subjective testing was a little more sobering. I played the Dragon Age 2 demo on high settings on both machines. Both were running at native resolution; the iMac was playable, but far from smooth -- as was the MacBook Pro. Which means anyone aspiring to use their new MacBook Pro with a 27" Cinema Display will find themselves (like I have) slightly disappointed with performance. That's not to say it's a disappointingly performing machine -- only that anyone who may be thinking of replacing their older iMac (and is a casual gamer) might want to consider holding on to it.

I'm upgrading from an '09 C2D MacBook Pro myself. While it's still a serviceable machine, the new unit has far exceeded my expectations, in nearly every way (contrary to what's been said above). My only gripe, if I have one, is that I'm now slightly torn as to which machine to do the majority of my work on.

Your 3dmark06 score is a bit low. Mine is pretty close to your iMac's core.

DA2 runs super smooth on mine, with zero tweaks.

Dragon Age 2 Demo
900p all very high, no AA
Avg: 47.083 - Min: 24 - Max: 65
(I think I left v-sync on by mistake - so the score would be even better)

What res were you driving? Native res on a 27" iMac is going to challenge much better video cards than the 6750m and 4850.

hear this i hope you are ready for this :

i downloaded the real demo and i get a steady 28fps (max 32 ~ sometimes) with fraps !

if i overclock the card 650/900/1430 via rivatuner : a killing 35-40 steady !
and this is on advanced !

gamer mode : i lose 10-15 fps less
but overall i am very happy with the results.

my only hope to get the new one, rely on 2 things :
- the 6750 is overclockable (i remember the x1600 was able to be overclocked)
- they release catalyst drivers every often

tell me what you think

p.s : i also own a macbook pro 4.1 which is the only gen working with Vidock external graphics cards.

the best is Vidock and the portability and battery life of a macbook pro !
no more need to buy/sell/buy/sell every time a new gen comes out

I've run it several times since the initial test (which was the result I posted above) and scored anywhere from 9-10.5k. As I've seen this is consistent with most other benchmarks, I haven't made an issue out of trying to squeeze more juice out of what's already there.

Where DA2 is concerned, I went into the configuration menu and turned everything to max before testing. I'm not sure if the disparity is due to what our own personal opinions are of "super smooth" (although you sound fairly reasonable to me), or if there is perhaps a setting or option I have turned on that you might not. Admittedly, most everything else save the DA2 demo runs extremely well -- games which I would consider far more demanding than DA2 (so I'm not too worried about it). I'm more worried about how this thing will handle Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2, if that gives you some perspective, lol.

awesome about Vidock, I cannot wait until an external graphics solution becomes available for the Thunderbolt. will be awesome.

if you're aware, You can buy the ********* laptop ever as long as it has a pc express card and running windows 7. thats why it only supports gen 4,1 macbook pro ( the ones before the unibodies).

my friend has a vidock 4 hooked up to his macbook pro 4.1 and a sony bravia 32" as an external display. he bought the gtx460 and believe me when i say this : he has no problem running all games on ultra or extreme with fps above 38 !

my macbook pro early 2011 is an obsolete machine compared to his rig ! and the worst is that vidock doesnt work with mine even with an external pc express card slot under bootcamp because of apple bios which technical architecture is way too much protected ;(

are these: GPU clock/memory/shader ?

what is the stock frequency ?

stock :

GPU 500 -> 650 Mhz
Memory 790 -> 900 Mhz
Shaders 1100 -> 1430 Mhz

original 3dmark06 score : 6700
overclocked 3dmark06 : 8900

also some members in macforums were able to get 9500 god knows how...

dont think so since they still use pc express card slot...
i mean, they could have done it through usb or firewire which they never did...

to give you an idea : http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=CA#/watch?xl=xl_blazer&v=7oOo7Q9NDjw

or with a macbook pro 4.1 : http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=CA#/watch?xl=xl_blazer&v=7eKu7rvaW4I

amazing isnt it

they use expresscard b/c it's faster. USB would not work for an external graphics card lol... you crazy not enough bandwidth

the thunderbolt is 3x faster than the expresscard slot. Yes I have faith one solution will be made for the thunderbolt + external GFX card.

I just made these HD videos showing Call of Duty Black Ops, Battlefield BC2 and Crysis 2 - with fraps and etc. It does look pretty good.
This should settle the whole "can I game with my macbook pro or not" issue.

I am really surprised with your fps in COD BO, I get more than that with exact settings you listed on nuketown with my 330m at 600/900 (was on a 12 man server and got 30-60fps mostly in the 40's). I expected the 6750 to have a good 50% more fps then the 330m due to the higher shader count and ddr5 memory!

Were you recording with fraps or just using fraps to monitor fps?

I recently ordered the 2011 17", I am tempted to cancel if the performance is not much higher than the 330m :(

Did anyone try to overclock the ATI card? I might buy the high end macbook pro depending on how the GP overclocks, that seems to be the bottleneck in graphics :(

ViDock doesnt work on the first Unibody Generation that still had an Express Card slot, thats correct. Maybe they fixed thats with drivers meanwhile, but i doubt it.

The company also had products for USB2DVI but those are slow and crap since USB2.0 is too slow.
Could very well be that they release something for Thunderbolt, since that is alot faster than even Express Card Slot and would enable really high end external GPUs.

Well the 6750 is 40% faster in 3dmark06 and about 50% faster in 3dmark vantage. How that translates to games exactly remains to be seen, but it should be a good deal faster anyway.

Yeah, and I also know the 5650 is a fair bit faster than the 330m too which is why I have been surprised to see such low fps in the youtube videos so far (ie cod bo and crysis 2 which are both similar to overclocked 330 scores).

In theory games should be significantly faster as it has 480 shaders whereas the 330m has 48 (which would equate to 240 of ATI shaders)

Does that mean it won't work in Snow Leopard and only in Windows? Or neither?

I really hope something does come out because I'll buy it immediatly.
