Could it be?

If tomorrow is Steve Jobs birthday...and tomorrow is also MY birthday... and tomorrow they might release new MBP's... and if by God's will they DO release new MBP's than..... THAT MEANS IT IS DESTINY FOR ME TO GET A NEW MBP!! I've never had a justified reason to buy a new laptop!! please lord let tomorrow be the best birthday ever!

linux is just about as trouble-free as OSX is. just because i run OSX on my MBP doesn't mean i don't run other OSes. it's all about making the best of what you have available when you have constraints. like i said... it doesnt make sense to purchase a c2d machine for $2500 when you can get a better one for $1300 given a time constraint and especially if your project or business relies on getting things done... it just makes... business sense! keep waiting if you must but at the end of the day if you cannot produce because you're limited by your options, start looking elsewhere. not all of us have the luxury to wait unfortunately... at least not anymore!

i was just wondering regarding the current mbp 3ghz w 8gb ram and fast hd what hold you off?
what kind of things you cant do that you could do w a vaio, besides blueray or games?
just curious

I am going to sit this one out and wait. I have been waiting for a long time and would only have the worse case of buyers remorse if I went with anything besides the 15" MBP. Everyone makes very good points from improved Win OS to the beefed up Vaio's. What convinces me to wait? Everyone that I know that owns a Mac, say it has been one of the best choices they have ever made and they would never go back - this inclues a couple college professors.

I am a Mac Newb and this of course will be my first Mac. There is one thing I dont understand. Why is Apple so secretive about their upcoming products? I have never really followed the company close (until just recently) and was wondering if it was always this way?

Geez people. The announcement for the macbook pro will be
at the wwdc. June 28-July 2 At the sametime as the the 4G Iphone.
The macbook pro will go on sale in October.

just go ahead
if you do not value enough the troube free experience of osx

How much is a "trouble free" OS worth to you? $500? $1000? $1500?

i guess some people just cant avoid having the fastest super machine even though full of trouble...
enjoy

I've never had a single problem with any of my PCs, outside of heat issues after over clocks, so, shrug.

You seem to be confusing windows with the word pc.

and what are you suggesting they'll sell in the time between july and october ? They won't announce a new product from a line that already exists before they'll put it out there because it'll seriously hurt the sales of the current model. It's been this way with apple for years.

YUP you can count on it! a trouble free computer is almost invaluable for me
if i have to pay $1000 more i will and be happy since i know by experience that i will not have any problems
i do everything w computer, music, photography, (which i make money with)
i sometimes have to deal with windows, (what other pc? linux? )
and i dearly hate it (did not use w7 yet)
yes when i say pc i mean windows since it is what 95% of people use
mac is not by any mean perfect, but for sure make me not wasting time since i am and dont wanna be no computer geek (which if you are, i can definitely understand why u love the freedom of windows more)

Arrandale (2 cores, 4 threads) mobile processors top out at 1066MHz RAM so it's highly unlikely the Kingston parts are heading for the MacBook Pro.

The older Clarksfield (4 cores, 8 threads) mobile chips do support 1333MHz RAM, but they came out last year and Apple ignored them. They also cost significantly more and consume more power making them an unlikely choice for the MBP.

The new Clarkdale (2 cores, 4 threads) desktop processors support 1333MHz RAM. They are the obvious choice to replace the Core 2 Duo in the iMac, but the iMac isn't due for an update until at least May.

I can think of one reason why we might see Clarkdale before then. Perhaps Steve Jobs blames ATI for the graphics glitches in the new iMac and has personally mandated a switch to nVidia graphics. In that case it would make sense to scrap the Core 2 Duo at the same time and move to the Clarkdale variant of the Core i5.

I really wish Intel would be more consistent with their naming schemes. They now have five different processors called Core i7 and three different ones called Core i5.

i will be happy if they go with clarksfiels. it is a good processor.
and we don't get crappy intel integrated graphics

Right, because then that would be a year since the last update which makes a ton of sense... I really don't get where people get these June or later ideas, maybe the same place where they get the idea that there needs to be an event for an update?

if you are talking about mbp you can already scratch your hopes
impossible they choose clarksfield
because of heat problems and power hunger
not even 1 chance
sorry
only one is arrandale

for one thing, a VM is much faster if it can handle multiple threads (one vCPU per thread would be nice) so therefore a dual-core (each single thread) CPU will be bad for VMs. i use VMs to simulate networks, and of course the more VMs i can run the better. two nodes in a network barely simulates a home office network, try an enterprise one. now one would argue that these kinds of workloads should be done on a desktop... then again, why not do it on a laptop if it's capable.

my brother is running 8 cisco simulated threads right now on his i5 arrandale. my 2.66GHz c2d MBP 17" can only run two. he got his for $599 at office depot, i got mine at the apple store for $2499. apples to oranges perhaps? but comparing computing power-wise, i envy my brother right about now... which is why i am waiting for the new MBPs

but i do need to produce something for work and like i said, at the current state of my machine, i am not producing (as much) so like i said, i may have to bite the bullet and get a PC laptop... i will hold off any purchases until early march after which i will just have to buy a PC. i would agree that i've never had problems with my macs (heck i've even melted my MBP v11 - 1st intel macbook - while running a server but it still works) but in terms of technology, apple is way way way behind at this point, and it's noticable! need i mention benchmarks now? apple can't quite boast its performance now except compare it to the previous generation macbook pro which is ridiculous... need i say more?

PS - just a moot point, i've owned macs exclusively since 2004... all listed below including the following:
(2) MB v4,3 @2.0
(2) mini v2,1 @2.0
(1) iBook @1.25 PPC G4
(2) iMac 20" late 2006 @2.1
(1) iMac 20" early 2008 @2.1

speculation request!

In your opinion, what processor will the Macbook Pro 13in be upgraded to?

i3, i5? Or will it stay with c2d
Will the upgrade be limited to MBP 15 and 17?

Speculate!

This just in:

New MBP will feature a new firmware built into the display which will prohibit the screen from displaying images of women in bikinis. The new feature was added as a result of women complaining about the presence of 'websites' which may portray women as they actually dress in real life. Apple is now widely expected to release the "iKini" which features an aluminum unibody enclosure which will be worn by women in lieu of the outdated swimwear. The move was widely heralded by the mac community as key to making the world a better place and just generally making things easier for everyone. Both devices will also feature magic and revolution as standard built-in features.

I lol'd heartily.

Agreed! Very funny!!
But Apple will only release one iKini update per year regardless of how much the iKini technology develops and other Kini competitors produce superior products. ;)

i can definitely understand why u love the freedom of windows more)

I understand that you like Mac OSX a lot. I do too. But comments like that make absolutely no sense. OSX is way more customizable and "free" than windows is, to it's advantage.

And I definitely didn't say I like Windows better. I don't run Windows.

No Update for MBPs

There are not a lot of laptops running Core i7.... but there are some and they are an absolute failure.... because Intel Released Core i5 and i7's last year as part of a test, those chips are third rate products with a better performance over Core 2 Duo but lacks stability... Example is the new HP Envy Core i7 1.6 Ghz I bought it. thinking it can beat the MBP's at every single thing with 6GB DDR3 ram but failed, it gets crazy hot and shuts down after every hour of gaming or HD video Encoding but for first 30 min it is crazy fast... and even I encouraged my friend to sell his old MBP to buy the HP Envy 15.4" ... Then later we realized we made a mistake... Intel Released those chips like beta testing. The new one they released during the CES 2010 is not yet been used by any computer makers. So before slamming on  do a search about the Core i5 & i7 released during CES 2010 and u will end up finding no computers. Take my word guys or if u want to experience Core i7 first wave try HP Envy and u will be unhappy with Intel. Recently I switched back to MBP's whereas my friend is angry on me and went and bought Sony Vaio. Is there any problem with SL 10.6.2 where most  Apps like Mail, Finder, iWeb and many more crashes and freezes every 10 min. Once in a while other third party apps to like MS Office. Is it a problem with C2D cannot handle the workload or everyone has the spinning wheel **** in 10.6.2... I mailed , they told me there is about 60 error codes in they're apps and it was fixed in 10.6.3 Beta 2 and it is about to be released. Apple is getting to much into iPhone and iPhone OS.... They should provide a better support with Mac OS or they will go down in the from 3 in customer service to 300 for sure....

unfortunately i would have to agree. i am very close to just purchasing a PC at this point. ive been using macs since 2004 and it'd be sad to go back to PC but it's a recession and you just can't expect me to pay that much money for something i can get so much cheaper and newer. something is wrong if i can't run more than 2 VMs on a $2000 machine that another machine costing $1200 can do.

i just hope they release them already. i am very close to just getting a PC instead.

The problem is that we do not know how the new hardware performs on OS X. Apple can't change what hardware is available. The new Intel HD (gfx chips) do not really match even the current 9400M unless using the desktop version clocked at 733 - 900 MHz. The mobile version is only 500 MHz. Despite the better performance of the Arrandale chips, the graphics performance drop may be a problem for Apple. We also don't know if Apple is going to switch to ATI or use NVidia's chips and if there is a delay because of driver issues.

As much as I would like quad-cores, the problem is heat and battery life. Some do not care about battery life and only want performance, I would prefer both, which is why I don't think quad-cores will be used across the Mac lineup until Sandy Bridge in 2011.

I really don't want to become an Apple apologist, but perhaps before moaning about the lack of new hardware, it would be beneficial to do some research and consider whether or not what is new will perform better than what is available now. Sure I would prefer discrete cards across the whole lineup, but I don't think that will ever happen again in the Intel era.

+1

Exactly. I think people are too wrapped up in having the latest 'n greatest, and don't realize what the potential drawbacks could be. If having a super-geewhiz-fast processor means Apple has to greatly compromise in other areas, what's the point?

First, sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your Envy 15.

But, I must correct you, there are a lot of notebooks with the Core i7 in it. There are 25 Core i7 notebooks on newegg, and these don't include all of the available Core i7 laptops on the market:

Here's a hint, unless you subscribe to the theory someone faked it:

These numbers are 25% faster than the fastest core2duo available in today's MBP. And the improvements here are consistent with other tests whose reliability is more certain, but in PCs. Now these results don't say anything about what discrete GPU apple has or will add, but it almost has to be better than any thing in the current MBPs - ATI or NVidia. I'm not happy about arandale's igu, but the dual solution of the current MBPs wasn't all that great either. For everyday work and even HD, what I've read about the IGP is it will be fine. Yes, I wish the IGP could take advantage of the open cl related benefits of snow leopard, but you can't argue the core2duo would do better. And booth the arandale IGP and the 9400 in MBPs will suck for more demanding graphics - e.g. games - and that's why Apple will continue to need an add on GPU. All of the PC notebooks with arandales are sporting discrete GPUs, so if they can do it, why can't apple? Your analysis of why no quad cores is dead on, by the way.

I'm happy to wait a bit until optimus switching with a decent NVidia or a newer ATI GPU come along to resolve the IGP drawback, as you suggest. A bit. Or longer if Apple gave some advance specifics of something more exciting, like they did with the ipad. But I've got a funky vista unit now on last legs, and good riddance. Just as easy to move to the greatly improved win7 (no, not better than OSX) if apple lags too far behind the rest of the PC world in adopting current state of the art in notebook processors and graphics - Having moved to an imac from windows, however, I'd much rather buy a MBPro with comparable features, even with an apple tax. But I won't pay a premium for last years tech.

Is there a possibility that new versions of software and other things will soon be incompatible with C2D? Or is it safe to say that those who are tired of waiting and choose to purchase the current line would still get 3-4 years of quality use? The current Macs would more than meet my needs but I would obviously wait if the C2D could become totally obsolete in the near future (1-2years).
And I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject.

exactly apple may be behind cause new processors/graphics creates problems they need to solve
who knows?
i dont think they are happy about their line up either
they just do not want to put out something buggy, or that give them problems with heating or battery life
cant really blame them for that
that is what happens when a company starts to spread energy in too many directions, ipod, phone, ipad...
they cant put total focus only in one direction like it was years ago

Well I just got a new MacBook Pro today. Glad that my wait is over. Hopefully the updates aren't too far away for the rest of you guys!
