This is looking remarkably similar to the Nikon situation where there has been great anticipation and disappointment over the non-announcement of the D700 replacement:

http://nikonrumors.com/

Funny you should mention this. At the moment i´m waiting for both a MacBook Pro update and the follow up to the D700. I´m quite sure we will see the MacBook Pros before the D700s/D700x/D800/D900 or what ever it will be called. I´m not expecting that one before the summer.

Arrandale (2 cores, 4 threads) mobile processors top out at 1066MHz RAM so it's highly unlikely the Kingston parts are heading for the MacBook Pro.

The older Clarksfield (4 cores, 8 threads) mobile chips do support 1333MHz RAM, but they came out last year and Apple ignored them. They also cost significantly more and consume more power making them an unlikely choice for the MBP.

The new Clarkdale (2 cores, 4 threads) desktop processors support 1333MHz RAM. They are the obvious choice to replace the Core 2 Duo in the iMac, but the iMac isn't due for an update until at least May.

I can think of one reason why we might see Clarkdale before then. Perhaps Steve Jobs blames ATI for the graphics glitches in the new iMac and has personally mandated a switch to nVidia graphics. In that case it would make sense to scrap the Core 2 Duo at the same time and move to the Clarkdale variant of the Core i5.

I really wish Intel would be more consistent with their naming schemes. They now have five different processors called Core i7 and three different ones called Core i5.

i have never been in this position.
heretofore, my computer cycle has been staggered with apple's such that my need coincides with a "mid product cycle" for apple.
this results in my being able to buy right when i need something new.
well this time is different. i need a new laptop. i have decided to go from MB to MBP. and, for the first time, i am playing the waiting game.
i can't wait, and i hope this is the tuesday for which i have been waiting.
i hope the processors are up to snuff.
cheers,
kyle

I'm leaving for Europe for a month. I need a MacBook Pro 13" and today is the last day, so I have to buy the current model. This sucks. I'm hoping now that Apple doesn't release the new ones until after I return so I can sell mine as used when I return.

why dont u buy it used?
so you wont lose as much money?
just a thought

The following is going to be logic based and therefore what i believe the most likely release and timeframe for the new MacBook Pro's

(You may point out faults in this logic)

1. Today is the one year Anniversary of the last refresh for MBP's we had. It is also the longest we have gone without a refresh.
2. Taking the information from point one, we would assume then, that Apple will not be waiting until June, because that would be absolutely absurd.
3. Apple will also not want to crush the iPad's launch with these new Macbooks, so we can also assume that the new ones will be either now very very soon, or much later. And with the logic from point 2, we can assume the former.
4.Today is a "Tech Conference" and this coming after the latest flurry of i7 macbook pro rumors. (1333 mhz DDR3 RAM spotted, benchmarks, etc)
5. I believe then, that we will see these new machines no later (if they are releasing them soon) than the First week of March. (based on logic from all these points)

Problems with the above anyone?? :apple::apple::apple::apple:

Point 1) - it wasn't a year ago, the last release/refresh was June 2009 , and before that October 2008 and before that February 2008, check the release dates here:

https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#MacBook_Pro

So that kind of blows the other points out of the way !

Although I do think it will be a Tuesday in March, but we shall see

Sony Vaio Z

You should look into the Sony Vaio Z series...it's a 13" laptop with great specs and good looks. Its set to go on sale mid-March, so that would be perfect for you since you'd still be in the country.

slightly sideways topic, but I was looking for i5 perf vrs c2d (about to press the button on a 13"), and found this:

http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/221835

MacPro4,1
Intel Core i5 650
Mac OS X 10.6 (Build 10A432)

Hackintosh? Real deal?
Hackintosh, 100%. It's just a Core i5 PC with a faked system ID.
Apple's Mac Pros already use CPUs with are much more powerful than any Core i5.

Do you have an iPhone? It also has the iTunes store build in. Although you can use your iPhone without owning a laptop, it is easier and more usefull to have one. And why do you think Steve jobs specifically mentioned that the ipad can sync with iTunes? Seems you haven't done you're homework right, you get an F! I'm sorry...

You get an F at telling the difference between an iPhone and an iPad. For some use cases the iPad benefits from being connected to a computer; for other use cases it replaces the computer. Also, did you happen to notice the massive pimping of having the iBookstore on the iPad itself rather than needing to sync with iTunes for that one? Why would El Steve make a fuss over that if he wasn't pointing out that attaching it to a computer was optional?

Tomorrow..

What's the possibility for Apple updating their MBP tomorrow? (Goldman sachs.. meeting!)

This just in:

New MBP will feature a new firmware built into the display which will prohibit the screen from displaying images of women in bikinis. The new feature was added as a result of women complaining about the presence of 'websites' which may portray women as they actually dress in real life. Apple is now widely expected to release the "iKini" which features an aluminum unibody enclosure which will be worn by women in lieu of the outdated swimwear. The move was widely heralded by the mac community as key to making the world a better place and just generally making things easier for everyone. Both devices will also feature magic and revolution as standard built-in features.

If I was Microsoft, I'd be starting up another "laptop hunters" TV ad campaign about how you can get newer tech for far less money.

unfortunately i would have to agree. i am very close to just purchasing a PC at this point. ive been using macs since 2004 and it'd be sad to go back to PC but it's a recession and you just can't expect me to pay that much money for something i can get so much cheaper and newer. something is wrong if i can't run more than 2 VMs on a $2000 machine that another machine costing $1200 can do.

i just hope they release them already. i am very close to just getting a PC instead.

I strongly agree with you...now that Windows 7 is out and not half bad, I'm looking at a Sony Vaio. In particular, the new Z series looks outstanding....with SSD standard, good battery life, an i7, and good graphics, it definitely is pushing me in the PC direction...

I wonder how many people who are on the fence will end up buying a Vaio instead of an MBP, just based on not having any solid evidence of an actual release date?

Vaio's offerings are pretty freaking tempting...even being an MBP owner.

That was the last opportunity (23 Fev). I am tired of wait... as I need the powerful computer, tomorrow I will buy a sony fw.

bye people

For me I'm still waiting for a new MBP and will give my wife my MB. HOWEVER, I am buying a new office machine and have decided to go with a PC because I won't be using it and I'm not going to reward APPLE for their lack of customer respect with not updating AND keeping quiet about when there might be an update. I'll still get my MBP (whenever) but I will personally cost them a few grand by not buying anything I don't have to.

just go ahead
if you do not value enough the troube free experience of osx, and just cant wait to get a slightly faster machine (cause pcs are not that much faster, unless u get clunky ones that burn your laps and battery life last 0)
until apple start having serious problems and screw up big time i would never ever again use a pc
but i guess some people just cant avoid having the fastest super machine even though full of trouble...
enjoy

Like I said, Vaio Z series...at least they give an approximate ship date...3/19

im fairly close. the only thing that really stops me from going to the PC side is that i've had macs since the revB powerbook and never turned back to a PC (except for work because we're required, but that's about to change and unfortunately they cannot wait and purchased us 17" MBPs with c2d... boohoo). even with 8GB of RAM, im not sure it can handle more than 2 VMs unlike the phenom desktop i have now on my desk. also, looking at my brother's dell i5 (he couldn't wait for the new MBPs already so he went ahead and grabbed a PC i5) 17", it is a monster that wouldnt fit in his bag, compared to my 17" MBP that fits snugly on a 15" bag... yes a 15" bag, plus its lighter.

which is why im holding out. it is not to say that i wont purchase another MBP down the road, but with the recession and all, it'll be long before i can save up again. like many other people, i do have constraints in my timeline and I've been waiting for an update since last year (to the point i even purchased a 15" MBP v5,4 AG back in october which is more portable than my 17" v5,3, as well as my current phenom desktop) for a more powerful CPU. it is hard to run multi-threaded simulations on a c2d, which kinda defeats the title "PRO" on the MBP until they recieve new updates...

but if they don't release soon, i'm gonna have to bite the dust and go with the vaio... far cheaper and far better than the arrandales because it's a clarksfield, which is as close to sandy bridge as you can ever get. i read reviews that they have a bad screen but it's the best thing around right now.

I'm listening to the webcast now. It's pointless.

I'm going to buy a MBP next wednesday with or without an announcement I think. My money is tied up in this iMac and need to get some food soon. :p

linux is just about as trouble-free as OSX is. just because i run OSX on my MBP doesn't mean i don't run other OSes. it's all about making the best of what you have available when you have constraints. like i said... it doesnt make sense to purchase a c2d machine for $2500 when you can get a better one for $1300 given a time constraint and especially if your project or business relies on getting things done... it just makes... business sense! keep waiting if you must but at the end of the day if you cannot produce because you're limited by your options, start looking elsewhere. not all of us have the luxury to wait unfortunately... at least not anymore!

Personal Opinion for what it's worth:

Jobs is an egomaniac that cares more about secrets he knows and his customers don't and making more money off the people who aren't die hards than to be respectful to those of us who are long time loyal customers.

For those who say that a release date for the new MBP would be costly because people would hold out on buying one....... THEY ALREADY ARE. Those who impulse buy STILL IMPULSE BUY. If that was a valid argument no car manufacturer in the world would announce what the next models features are and when they expect it to roll off the assembly because they feared no one would buy the current model. It's just selfishness and arrogance at the root of his personality.

The more of us that write about this and buy elsewhere when we can, the more he takes this to heart. I have the luxury of waiting (although I would appreciate knowing how long) and I also have the luxury of buying outside of Apple for the business and personal items that I want.

This puts me in a selfish mode of not spending a dime with Apple unless it's a product I decide I can't get somewhere else. Until Jobs starts treating us like valued customers I'm going to spend my money elsewhere for everything I possibly can.

Whew, I feel better. Now having said that as I have said before, I will still hold off for the new MBP whenever it comes out but that's about it.
