You'll save hundreds by buying your own RAM from somewhere like newegg.ca. I've always upgraded the RAM myself on all my Macs and have almost always saved at least 50% from what Apple would have charged. Plus, if you buy your own RAM you can sell the old stuff on eBay and recuperate some money there as well. You won't save much on the SSD, though. But, again, you'd have a spare 500 GB hard drive that you could use.

Also, AppleCare is 3 years, not 2, and is worth a lot considering Apple's excellent service/customer satisfaction. I always get AppleCare, especially on laptops.

Well I just got a new MacBook Pro today. Glad that my wait is over. Hopefully the updates aren't too far away for the rest of you guys!

Hopefully the updates ARE far off for you, because I'm sure you'll be hitting yourself if the same MBP you just bought gets upgraded with a new iX processor, bigger/faster HDD, RAM, GPU, etc. and is priced the same or cheaper.

ACPP is for babies who can't take care of theire computers. You only need it if you know you're gonna spill cofee over it or drop it to the ground or whatever.

I don't know about US or other contries, but here in norway we have the waranty of the product (1 year or 2) and then we have the right to complain and return the product if there is a issue or error on the machine within 5 years after purchased date. I think the english word for it is promotional.

In other word, you don't need the protection plan if you care enough for your macbook pro.

If only I had cared more about my powerbook G4, it wouldn't have had that kernel panic. And if only I had cared more about an iBook, it wouldn't have needed a new logic board.

Apple Care doesn't cover dropped or wet computers, it covers the things that you can't prevent. It is a very good idea for most people.

Thx. I'm taking care of my MBP for sure!

Here in the Netherlands the shipping date is up to 3days!!! yesterday it was 24 hrs! the update is comming???

UK and US stores still show 24 hours, plus the NL store only shows one of the 15 inches as 3 days, the rest are still 24 hours.

First, sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your Envy 15.

But, I must correct you, there are a lot of notebooks with the Core i7 in it. There are 25 Core i7 notebooks on newegg, and these don't include all of the available Core i7 laptops on the market:

Agreed. Have you made a decision on what route you're going to take? Are you going PC or are you waiting to hear about the MBP?

Haha, 02/26/10 ppl. Thats the sign given to us by SJ.

Kingston has changed date to 26

Approx: 2/ 26/ 10

Can´t be a mistake, otherwise they would have taken the module from their page by now. Its there for everyone to see, because we should see it. Steve, Happy BDay u SOB. ;) I think he´ll update this sucker this or at least next week.

yea but what about this http://www.amdex.com/store/product.aspx?mfgNum=KTA-MB1333%2F2G

If you check Apples iPad Spec site, it still reads:

This device has not yet been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

So, if we assume that Apple will not release the MBP Updates until the iPad Preorder is able to start, it might very well be possible that the FCC is holding the strings in their hands right now. Apple might still wait on the permission for the iPad sale (or has to fix some issues with the iPad), but already ordered Kingston to build, sell and ship the Macbook Pro Ram Modules to vendors worldwide, so they are available for customers at day one. It can´t take that long now, it looks like they are already preparing ground to sell those.

So, don´t get angry people, i think Apple wants to sell them but isn´t able to yet. The only option would be releasing the MBP Updates before the iPad Launch, which is something they possibly don´t want to do.

Let´s chill, they might just be as eager to release those things as we are getting them. :)

I can't wait for your harsh reality to come to your door one day.

Secretly this is what I am thinking... I wanted to wait for the update but unfortunately needed to get a new laptop ASAP for work. At least give me a couple weeks haha ;)

Hmm... apple care is what, $150? You're getting essentially insurance on a $2000 electronic device. It seems that it's well worth it for higher end devices.

I gurantee that if you bought apple care and didn't need it, you'd be less furious than if you didn't buy it and your monitor loses a pixel 1 day outside of warranty.

I don't think that Apple Care is ever worth it. You are paying a really high premium for your computer to begin with, and then Apple is charging you an ultra high insurance premium that only lasts for a 2 years. This doesn't even cover things that you might do on accident like dropping your macbook in the bathtub.

The cost of Apple Care depends on what product you are buying it for. Assuming default configurations (no custom upgrades) available in the online store, below I have listed the price of Apple Care and the percentage of purchase price below:

Mac Mini = $149 (25%-15%)
iMac = $169 (14%-8%)
MacBook / MacBook Air / 13" MacBook Pro = $249 (25%-17%)
15" - 17" MacBook Pro = $349 (21%-14%)
Mac Pro = $249 (10%-8%)

I always get it. I have two white MBs and a Mini (one is my wifes), which have had the following replaced, free, usually within a day:

the keyboard (3 of them - 2 on my laptop, 1 on my wifes)
bottom case (both laptops)
top case (same)
bezel (same)
(usual cracking issues around the hinges etc, and the rest were just a bit worn),

the fans (in 3 hours - seriously, the turn around at the Regent St apple store in the UK is _fantastic_),

and because I had three macs under warranty (ok, maybe not _because_ of that, 1 would do), they replaced my TimeCap 500GB with a 1TB when it went t-s up. I didn't get my data off it, but other than that....

I think it's worth it. for every day I'm without my macbook (soon to be a pro this weekend), it costs me around £400, not to mention the slipping of deadlines.

So I can make the cost of the apple care back in around 3 hours. £180 for the warranty is worth it. I've gotten back 2-3x that just in the repairs. Keep in mind I'm VERY VERY careful with my laptop. Most of the time, it sits on a stand next to my desk. No chance of coffee or anything getting in etc. It's a little more dusty than I'd like, but noone could claim it was "dirty"...

I'm only replacing my MB (2ghz, 4GB, 500GB) for two reasons: it's almost out of the 3 year warranty, and I can't get 8GB in the thing to run enough VMs. Other than that....

Drop your notebook...in the bathtub? I don't think any computer manufacturer will compensate something as utterly stupid as that.
