I think it would be nice to make a poll, voting for the most common options we would like to see in new mbp. Just to see at a glance what most people want.

do a poll like that and then a poll with things that suggest what apple WILL Most likely provide to get a feel of what people expect (and not want)

My big prediction is a higher resolution screen for the 13". Current resolution of the MB and the 13" MBP is 1280x800px.

The MBA 11" has 1366x768 pixels, while the 13" MBA has 1440x900 pixels.

Expect the 13" MacBook Pro to have a 1440x900 pixel screen. It doesn't make sense to have the AIR have a higher resolution screen . . .

Higher res for all MBPs as standard? Only option if you want anti-glare. Perhaps i3 for MBP 13". Can't see much more on the 15 and 17" CPU/GPU wise.

All the more reason to discontinue the 13" MBP. Can't have the bastard child of the MBP line outshine its' bigger and more powerful siblings.

If not discontinue it then move the 13MBP back to just plain old MB status. Oh wait... it was there once before it became pro.

I hope this doesn't happen but it just stands to reason that the more laptop offerings Apple provides with similar sizes the harder it will be to keep them all unique from each other (and priced accordingly). Up until the arrival of the revamped Air, that feature distinction was screen size but that distinction will get blurred as the Air blossoms into a viable option.

Oh the tangled webs we weave...

we could just get rid of the old MB, the white one... it does seem "useless" as the MBP does out feature it even though they are "remarkably the same" weight and battery life wise.

they have too many 13" models out there, so i fear they will slice them off soon. the question here is which one will be next?

I hope it's the white macbook. Think about it, its the only plastic Mac Apple makes. I also think a lot of people go with the low end 13 inch mbp over the mb because of the aluminum and backlit keyboard.

I think all 13 inchers still sell pretty well. MBA is a totally different beast from other 13" Macs. Even though MacBook is only 200$ less than MBP, that is a lot for a student for example. I bet many people don't see the point of paying more for MBP because MacBook offers nearly the same features for 200$ less.

If MacBook is discontinued, then Apple has to drop the price of 13" MBP to 999$. Personally I would like to see e.g. 799$ MacBook with even lower specs. That would be sufficient for most people

It won't be the unibody white MB. This is Apple's #1 selling notebook. I'm not sure if this is because $999 is the "sweet spot" in Apple's pricing structure or simply because the damn thing is white. Most likely a bit of both but given the meager $150-200 difference between the two similarly spec'ed machines I'd say it was more due to color - something I guess I'll never understand. But hey, this is AppleLand.

The MB won't be discontinued but you bring up a good point. I can see Apple not changing a thing on it but dropping the price. I doubt they'll lower the specs on it like they did mine. (An early 2008 model which came with a stock 2.4ghz C2D but was removed as an option so the new MBP's would look better).

Anything's possible. Whatever happens though it will most likely piss me off but I'll live.

Agreed. 13" is the sweet spot for laptops. It makes perfect sense for Apple to have as many price points as possible.

Right now the only thing that is out of whack in my mind is the MBP 13. It really needs to have processing power and screen resolution closer to it's bigger brothers.

My wife could choose any mac book. She went for the White one because it's the cutest. Go figure
I dont see why having options are bad. Choice is good. 3 different 13 Ingjerd is fine by me.
I do wish they would drop the sd card slot and get the express card slot back in the 15"

But maintaining all that variety costs Apple money (i.e. costs you and I money). Unless of course they make up for it by gaining market share I suppose. It worked for Wal-Mart. :D

Ain't gonna happen. This is about the only prediction I'll make with 100% confidence.

Your dreaming if you think an SSD is going to be standard. Do you know how much those things cost!

why are you quoting me? cool11 said that ssd will be standart. i know how much they cost. nevertheless it is highly probable that they will include it as standart on the next mbp 13"

Unless they make Macbook a $800 machine to reach mid level users, it will probably get the boot. That could cause a significant increase in market share. The MBA and 13" MBP can coexist because there are sill a lot of ppl who dont get enough out of the MBA but dont want to shell out for a $2k 15".

I hope they make the switch to ATI........I desperately want them to put a beefy gpu in the new 15's

and no they won't make 8GB default. but you can upgrade it yourself for 125 bucks heh....or via apple for 400 :O

I would get either the Macbook Pro 15", like many people here have suggested, or wait for the nest update which is expected to be somewhere in 2011 if you can wait that long. The next update could possibly use the i3, and if it doesn't, you can decide then, choosing between the newer and better versions of Macbook Pros.

I really hope that the next macbook pro would be awesome. Awesome enough for me to get one. :)
x2. I'm still using my late 2006 MBP. The one with the ATI graphics. All the models since then have been rather mediocre, and I can't justify the cost for such marginal improvements.

Now with the Core i7, that's enough of a CPU bump to get me to upgrade. Just need to work on the GPU, the current nvidia ones that Apple is using are so blah. If the new MBP has awesome ATI graphics, I will definitely upgrade.

Agreed.....

-sandy
-ssd standard
-light peak
-osx recovery/install on light peak device
-better graphics
-all new design
-maintain optical

Hopefully the SSD will be standard, though it's questionable because the price is so extraordinarily high (e.g. they charge $1300 right now for a 512g upgrade). Highly a hybrid drive as there is little room available for two bays, and I doubt even more highly the integration of the air's blade SSD chips because that would require a complete redesign of the interior. see image: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/dMvHZpKm1hGbxbIC.huge

Also, it seems likely that they will keep the optical drive for a while. The MBP is a prosumer notebook, and by dropping the ODD, apple turns the mbp into a netbook or any other low end consumer device, trapped between its usb ports and its wifi. For professionals, like most of those who spend 2000+ on a notebook, you need to be able to create disposable media, and I don't consider a $10 flash drive disposable when your shipping samples/masters/data constantly. even though its unused by most people, its a lot cheaper for apple to stick in a $25 odd than to actually put something meaningful in that space like a 2nd disk bay, or more ram bays, without repricing the device another $600 up beyond the reach of most buyers. I highly doubt them dropping the odd in the 13 inch either simply because that would make it even less formidable than the 999 white macbook.
