My clients still demand DVD's to be delivered to them while we're on set all day. This is what really scares me about apple lately... If there is no OD this will be one more step backwards, for me at least, in a "new" apple computer.

I'd say having to burn DVD media in the field probably puts you in a distinct minority. It's not like Apple is taking away the ability to burn media... you'll just have to carry around an external OD now. And if Apple removes it most laptop makers will follow suit.

It seems they no longer design computers to what clients are demanding now, but what they think they should far to far in the future.
Apple (Steve) has been doing this ever since he became CEO again. :) This won't change. But I was actually surprised when he put Firewire back in the MBP so who knows?

I'm sure your client would accept a USB flash drive as well. Sure it costs a bit more but a few $ price increase due to that shouldn't be that big deal when dealing with projects (assuming your projects aren't 10$ deals and you don't have to deliver dozens of DVDs).

I'm not saying the OD will be removed. I can see it disappearing from the 13" and maybe even from 15" but that would still leave the 17" with the OD. I know you're going to say that not everyone wants a 17" MBP but on the other hand, not everyone wants the OD which takes about 1/4 of the innards and is completely useless to a lot of people. And yes, there is always the external option.

There are plenty of other medias that can be used and some of them are much more practical than DVDs.

Yes, a good point. As a photographer I'm doing this now.

Video though is another story which still begs for disc media for multiple and dedicated playback devices.

One day soon perhaps.

When I say my clients are “demanding” it, it means we really tried to talk them into excepting flash drives or other ways to deliver already and they will not (or can not) do it. In one case the client does let us deliver shows on a flash drive for playback, but we still must deliver finals on playable DVD’s for the producers and company execs. And any shots we record straight from camera must be put onto something that cannot be erased like a DVD. Yes I can pack a DVD burner as well (which means a new travel pack for planes), but my annoyance is that rather than a new Macpro making my life easier, each generation seems to make it a bit more difficult to get my job done. In a nutshell I need a laptop that gives me more options for my clients, not one that limits them.

How has each made your job harder? What else have they gotten rid of?
The express card is still on the 17" and the fire wire port is back.. so I am not sure what you are talking about here, care to elaborate?

Well I like to use 15" so no express card. But I'll probably just go up to the 17 next. But as you say "the fire wire port is back", well why did it go in the first place? Sorry but pretty much all capturing video out live from the camera involves a firewire port, and usually two (don't want to have the "daisy chain" argument, but trust me in video it does not work with the camera in line). So the latest MacPro line only has the 17" that's as useful on set as my 4 year old 15".

Fine, but there had to be a giant internet whine to even get it back, same with the matte screen (I'm outside in the sun on set a lot too). It's just a trend I see where Apple cornered the market on software in my field (my clients all have FC so avid is not an option until they change over) but then has been reluctant to make hardware that allows me to fully take advantage of the software. I'm not saying the new machines are "bad" or even unusable, they are just slipping away from machines that provide me with solutions, towards machines I have to fight to keep what solutions I have now intact it seems.

I Have to say that I hope that at least new MPB 13 loses the internal SuperDrive.

On the other hand, I bought my early 2008 MBP 15 right after the late 2008s were introduced. I already had invested in multiple Firewire peripherals and external eSATA storage, so losing the express slot and the FW 400 connector was more important than getting the new unibody design.

Sometimes progress takes on strange forms.:(

Reports saying new iPads not expected until April. I thought we were gonna get the iPad at the end of Jan and the MBP in April. Does this mean it's the opposite and we're getting a new MBP in a month? Thats completely feasible as Sandy Bridge is going to be at CES on the 5th. Either Light Peak isn't making it to this update or it's really coming as early as Intel hinted it might. Based on release timing trends, the MBP is due to be released any time now as it has been the usual 8 months, but the last update had a 10 month gap because of delays with the graphics in the i5's and i7s. I cant think of any issues that should delay the MBP besides Light Peak and SSD price negotiations. Also Nvidia released a new 540m GPU that is in the same power envelope as the 435m but at a slightly higher clock speed, maybe this will push prices down across the line, allowing a high end GPU like the 435 or 460 to make its way into the 15 or 17" MBP.http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/12/07/foxconn_to_ship_next_gen_ipad_in_next_100_days.html

I would love that. They put a 460 gtx gpu i would sell my 2010 macbook pro in a second.

You lucky jerk you already have a 460! Im on an old GT 9400 :(. Just got the Momentus XT HDD and 4 GB RAM today so I'm pumped anyway.

Prediction

Here's my prediction:

1. Sandy bridge
2. removal of the optical disk drive
3. SSD implemented on the motherboard
4. Better discrete graphics card
5. A massive increase in battery, because of the extra room from the removal of the OD
6. Lightpeak

If all these things get implemented in the next macbook pro I will be willing to pay between 2000-2500 euro's for even the base model.

Here's hoping

I'm praying that this is true. If we are to assume the iPad is released in April, it makes perfect sense for the MacBook Pro to be updated at CES.

I don't know about Lightpeak, but I'm hoping that FireWire isn't ditched. I don't need an optical drive, but I DO need to plug in my audio interface!!!

weird question but:
so apple adopting light peak is a high certainty right?
do you guys think that in the next gen. iPad, itouch, etc. apple (if it adopts light peak) will change the wiring so the port it connects to is a light peak port? or is this way to hard and will frustrate every single human being who feels devoid without a proper apple product?

It again depends what is considered as "retina" display. If it means +300PPI, then it's highly unlikely because iPad would need resolution of 2560x1920. Even high-end 30" EIZOs and NECs have only 2560x1600 and they cost thousands so that resolution is more or less impossible in iPad.

If ~150PPI is enough to be considered as retina display (it is if viewed from 2ft), then it's very possible because current iPad has PPI of 132. 1280x960 or 1400x1050 is something that I could expect from iPad. That would increase PPI to 160-170 and as it's not that big step, it shouldn't cost too much.

It's hard to predict anything though. We didn't have 330PPI in smart phones before iPhone 4 so when it comes to Apple, nothing seems to be impossible.

Doubt resolution will increase anytime soon.
Apps wouldn't scale properly

Absolutely not. Even the iPad2 will incorporate plain old USB and Apple will look pretty stupid promoting one technology yet implementing another in one of its products.

unfortunately, i doubt LP will be ready in time. we would have seen more than just a prototype by now. i would love to be wrong on this one

I reckon there's a very good chance that a Jan/Feb MBP will have Light Peak, but if it's not released until March/April, it becomes more of a certainty.

I would say that the iPad 2 will not have Light Peak, it will continue to use USB. Instead, I reckon LP will debut on mobile devices with the iPhone 5.

Why? Light Peak is Apple's baby with Intel, so it doesn't seem too far fetched that Daddy Apple will keep doing what daddy does best; keep babies locked in the cupboard until they're all grown up.

What will happen to the older model...

once the new ones come out? Will they still be sold in store, but at lowered price? or the same but just up the price of the new model?
