Would it be possible for them to use the i7-2649M Processor in the new macbook pro 13'. It has a max TDP of 25w and 2.3ghz clock with 3.2ghz turbo. I would love to see this...

Technically yes but the price is rather high. IIRC it costs as much as other i7s which are only used in high-end models

It costs about 50% more than what Apple has been putting in the 13" models so it is unlikely. I would really like a low TDP quad core though.

I suppose, but tbh I think i'd pay it to future proof, I would love if it was a BTO option

I agree. Just because I want a 13" doesn't mean I don't want Pro performance. Make a 13" entry level pro (or let the air fill that market) and make the step up 13" MBP a real workhorse. At least provide it as a BTO.

Yea im on intels site now checking the differences, its quite a jump, one can hope though :p. I wonder what the new intel graphics will be like.

It would also be nice for them to have more BTO's

- for example with todays 15" models, enable the 512mb gpu be a BTO for all the models, not just forced into the high end,

- future models- perhaps make the flash storagecapacity/no optical drive( if the time has come) be an BTO. * I can't see Apple taking away the drive fully in this refresh.

* side note, today is apples quarterly results. Often times, within days or a week surrounding the financial results, some sort of refresh, media event, announcement, etc.. comes to light. Hope so this time! Also, the website does have Valentines Day promotions nows regarding the ipad, not verizon iphone. In fact, it says the "one and only ipad", yes the ipad 2 is imminent, however to be bold.. why would a big promotional for V-Day for ipad for go out with such words if a new version would be out before hand or announced only to make people wait and not buy one for V-day. Could MBP be coming sooner than April, I think yes. Especially since Intel stated production for the SB chips was ramped up to meet demand, apple has had early access before.

Apple likes to force people to buy higher-end models. It's very, very easy money for them. Want an antiglare screen? You have to pay ~2000$. Apple could make it a free BTO option in ALL MBPs but why would they? Their current business scheme brings more profit and running a company is all about business.

Sure, I would love more BTOs but it sounds unApple-ish.

Ok maybe just the trackpad and higher res screens.
Is the trackpad of the new Air really bigger than the trackpad of the current-gen MBPs?

I agree on the resolution, a bump is way overdue for the 13" MBP. I hope we'll finally see IPS panels and also a matte screen option for the 13".

I am not sure, it might even be the same size as the MBP's. If you watch the MacBook Air vid, the dude says they made the trackpad bigger from the previous gen Air to accomodate multi-touch gestures better (and because gestures on the display would be uncomfortable).

I'm thinking they could expand the 15" and 17" MBP trackpads to saturate the extra space also. (The 13" trackpad already saturates the space.)

Yeah, but the original Air even still had a button below the trackpad.

No, because the keyboard is the same size on all three models.

My prediction:
- Same form factor as before
- Resolution bump on the 13" model
- Sandy Bridge i5/i7 CPUs
- GeForce 525M for 15"/17" models

[edit]: Oh yeah, totally forgot about that:
- Flash memory (but not exclusively)

My wishlist:
- IPS panels
- Matte screen option on the 13"
- Dedicated graphics chip on the 13" (otherwise they'll have no choice but to go Intel IGP only on that model)

Yeah yeah yeah, I thought of both possibilities at the same time.

Realistic = consistency for aesthetics and economics.
Idealistic = it would be cool + the Air introduced it.

The trackpad on the new Macbook Air is no where near as good as on the MBP. My girlfriend got one from work, and while the computer itself is amazing, the trackpad really lets it down, as it is indented into the case (if that makes sense?), so it's much harder to use than on a MBP.

Agreed with you 100% Gooner44.

This is the Macbook PRO, not Macbook Amateur.

The Macbook Air is a cool little niche device. I have friends with them, and they're cute. Sturdy, great iPad alternative.

But the Macbook Pro is a unit that is not for the average consumer, or someone who doesn't plan on using this for professional reasons. The Macbook does just fine for those needs.

Which of course is why there's so many MBP13's and MBP15's in the hands of students and other people using them for "nonprofessional" reasons.

Yeah, it makes sense. But that deep?

I love my MBA 11" trackpad. It's a bit shorter and the click feels different due to the lack of heft underneath it like in the Pro, but it works all the same.

Just jumping into this, we're probably not seeing quad core and no optical drive this refresh? Time to hold on to my MBA for longer than expected. A computer built for an optical drive is a waste of money.

My guess is just 2 cores 4 threads again, but with faster clocks, higher turbo, and DDR3 1333 RAM.

That is good that they have good taste, but that's not the user the device is designed for.

Anyone can play on a Gibson Les Paul if they can afford it. I mean, all you need to do is buy it. That doesn't mean that the American-made Gibson Les Paul guitars were made with beginners in mind, even if it is what beginners want.

Also, depending on the field of study, a Macbook Pro may be an edge.

You don't have to use one for professional reasons, of course. But it is designed with the professional in mind.
