So far, so happy with mine. Got an i5/16/1TB last week. A very noticeable step up from my old iMac.

Yes, the 2020 13” MacBook Pros have better GPUs. Even the base model with the 8th generation chip has an older version of Iris Plus that is still better than UHD 620. As for external GPUs, they aren’t very portable.

Nevertheless the pure processing power of the i7-10810u is higher and the GPU is via external GPU upgradable.
Much more important are repailability und data-protection - and as we all know the winner is the thinkpad by far (one site service for 3 years and upgradable M.2 ssd).

Lenovo is currently shipping only the quad-core models (up to the i7-10610U), and they are VERY expensive. I quickly configured one at $3100 with the upgraded non-touch display, 512GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM.

My guess is that accommodating the i7-10810u and a discrete GPU would be too constricting in the 13” MacBook Pro design.

Yes Lenovo is VERY expensive but worth every penny. You pay for hardware and service, for the freedom to take the SSD out or upgrade it.

I picked up the 10th gen 2.3/32GB/2TB 2020 13" today (they keep this model stocked at Apple Stores).

I am one of those complaining about the 16" when connected to external displays.

I have to say the 13" is VERY impressive. I have 2x 4k displays connected via TS3+ Caldigit. I run at scaled mode (looks like 2560x1440 / 5k scaled) which is a little more GPU intensive. And I have to say it handles it great.
I don't game. And only occasionally edit my GoPro/iPhone footage in 4k60p. I tried it out on the 13" and it handles it fine. The 16" is better for this.
But for every day use, the 13" kills it with external displays. Completely silent. Whereas the 16" dedicated dGPU (can't be disabled when you connect external displays) draws 20w constantly and gets hot/gets loud when watching a simple video on YouTube.

My only complaint is going from 8 cores to quad. If only there was a hex-core i7 10th gen available for this form-factor. This machine would be perfect.

Thanks for the review, do you know what temps you were typically running and what apps you were running at the time?

For me, it’s mainly because I have to juggle multiple google accounts, and Safari doesn’t seem to play well when it comes to quickly switching amongst them.

So on my Mac, I use my personal gmail account on safari (which is where I run YouTube). For work, I access my google sites via Chrome. Anecdotally, google docs seems to run and render better in chrome than in Safari. And the bookmarks sync with chrome on my windows work laptop, but I also use Pinboard for managing bookmarks.

Plus with 40 gb ram on my imac, I can still take the hit.

Just feels cleaner that way.
I would suggest Firefox. Plenty of easy ways to switch Google accounts, and there's a multitude of ways to sync and share bookmarks.
Google docs and sheets are good, especially for collaboration and sharing documents,. I am trying to make the leap to Apple docs from MS Office where possible (not possible for Excel plugins).
Other than Chrome being resource intensive, Google is a pretty terrible company in terms of privacy and data-mining. Strongly recommend re-thinking what you are giving up for some of their services. Having a lot of memory to run Chrome is also a very expensive way to browse the web! o_O

I know the MacBook Pro screen has less nits needed for true HDR, but can the screen show at least the colours needed for HDR? The link below suggest it can display on basis the 2020 model is the same as the 2018 and 2019 MBP.

Any ideas?

Just out of interest, given the fans were not running or near on silently, what do the temperature matter and the temperature where?
Genuine question
💡🤔

On my 2013 13” MBP, it typically runs between 47-70 degrees and I can’t hear the fans, but that’s a wide temp difference.

OK understand that, but why does it matter what the temperature is if it doesn't impact the user experience?

Thought of it. But I use safari because that's what syncs with my other apple devices, and I use chrome for work because that's the other browser that's installed on my work-issued windows laptop, and I don't have the admin rights to install third party software like Firefox.

In the end, there's just no compelling reason for me to use Firefox.

All browsers can easily sync with other devices - not just a Safari feature.
I hear you on the trouble installing without Admin rights - but it is possible. Just install it to a localised location that you have full control over - on One Drive or within the /Users directory (like 'My Downloads').

If you look up what personal and identifiable data Google harvests, you might find a very compelling reason.

I know, but Safari is the default browser on iOS, so it makes sense to use it, and less sense to use other third-party browsers which are just reskinned webkit apps anyways.

Would that get me into trouble with my IT dept?

Which is why I use it only for work. My entire school is on google apps (gmail, drive, classroom, everything), and it's just easier to go with the flow in this regard.

On iOS yes Firefox and other browsers are just re-skinned. But not on desktop operating systems. There's plenty of reasons to not use Chrome is my point and your issues seems to be syncing - which is possible on other browsers regardless of OS.

I cannot comment on IT department guidelines on installing on your equipment.

There is probably more rigorous data protection with data produced and created by minors (if tyou are under 18), but even so - other browsers work just fine with Google apps - such as Firefox and Safari, without the tracking.
I would be wary though. If you're happy to give up personal data to Google, then you exactly the kind of product that Google wants. Up to you but be aware, Google is not your friend. 🤔

What Apple Store is open? Where did you pick it up?

Temps aren't really available yet for the new model, iStat devs are working on it. But it's quite cool. I live in a warmer climate, so when its warm i notice it as the fans tend to spin up quicker in my cases of MacBooks I've owned yet this one does quite well.

Stores are open in Australia.

After a few reports of people saying that the battery life is not good, I might wait for the 14" version then.
I am getting 10 hours of real-world usage from my 8th Gen/16GB model and am very satisfied.

Does anybody have an idea about these peaks showing in power gadget when my computer is idle? I think the main temp (PKG) is fine but its just strange I keep getting these peaks. any ideas?

Really? That is good to hear. Now I am interested again.

How do you use the MBP btw? (music production / software development / ......)

Currently I am using it for basic Office/web browsing usage but I am intending to get back into software development using Xcode/Pyspark/Docker which is why I upgraded to 16GB
