So are they any changes to the speakers and microphone array or not? I’m sure I’ve read/heard some say there are and some say there aren’t.

I think you may be right. I saw a review by Marcus Brownlee that stated mics and speakers were updated if I am not mistaken.

Saw that as well but I think he was mixing things up there..

@ascender - on the specs site on apple.com it states there's stereo speakers with high dynamic range in the 13", yet a high‑fidelity six‑speaker system with force‑cancelling woofers in the 16".
Also three-mic array vs. studio‑quality three-mic array.. so still the old stuff in the 13" MBP I figure.

Why would we? It is expected to be delivered only 7-15 days after release, somewhere next week. Because most of the youtubers opted in $1799 which has longer delivery time. And i guess none of them went with the base in the first place. But base ships faster.
The first shipments of the $1799 model are arriving today, so we should start seeing some results. Mine is in a UPS truck a mile or so from my place. I’m not a YouTube reviewer, but will post some thoughts later today.

I get ~2700mb/sec on a 2018 13" MBP, both read and write. Something is strange there.
Do you have the 256GB or 512GB? Generally there is a big jump in speed from 256GB to 512GB and then it levels off after that.

Yeah Marcus makes a lot of small mistakes in his videos, I'm sure this is one of them. Apple would be advertising on the Learn page about new speakers or mic setup and they are not, and the Tech Specs page is identical to what it said for the previous model.

..or even significantly better, in single core?!
Appears they're just comparing the 1699 model with the i5 and with an upgraded i7. The new lower end MBP is represented on that chart via the 2019 model, which the updated version of does nothing to change when it comes to processors.

There are a bunch of i5 benchmarks in Geekbench now:
There is only one i7 result, and it's lower than the i5 results, so I don't trust it until we get more data points. I've been holding off to see what the performance is with the 13-inch MacBook Pro before I decide between this and a 12.9 inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. Thus far, it looks like the performance is slightly better with the MacBook Pro, but it's a very small difference.

At this point, I'm leaning towards waiting another year to see what the A14 brings to the iPad Pro and what Apple does with ARM Macs, or maybe bringing AMD processors to the MacBook Pro.

I ordered the standard base model. and just got it today. Keyboard is amazing. very happy I was able to return the the MacBook Pro I bought 1 week prior

Could you confirm that your 2020 base matches the 2019 8th Gen MBP 1.4 Geekbench scores for CPU and Compute? Also curious your read and writes for the 256GB SSD from Black Magic. After its done indexing and seems settled in of course.

Although presumably not as fast as the SSD’s in the higher-spec’d models, this is actually a fair bit better than last year’s base model, as reported by AppleInsider:

“Moving on to BlackMagic's Disk Speed Test, the $1299 base model 13-inch MacBook Pro tops out at around 495MB/s for its write speeds and around 1350MB/s for its read speeds.”

Yeah, 1250MB/s write 1770MB/s read seems pretty great for the 256 GB base model. I would assume that most of the speed improvement is related to the higher capacity.

I am interested in thermals once it is hooked to an external monitor. Many reports of heat issues on the 16 when attached to external monitor. I would like the price point and size of the 13 over the 16. But 13 will have to work well with external monitor. Need the screen real estate to be able to work from home.
I think it will depend on the Monitor. If it can drive a 6k monitor I would hope that it would not stress to much on lesser monitors

Thank you @nyli2 . Im sure your scores will improve after its done indexing. It looks like they fall right in line with the 2019. I just wanted to make sure they did not sneak in a modification.

So, what would be the consensus?

Is the Base MBP 2020 faster than the MBA 2020 in daily use? Ignoring the GPU.

Here are two reviews so far from MKBHD and The Verge

The Verge's review is most helpful.

Better performance than the 2 day newer released Microsoft Surface Book 3 which is using an i7 vs MBP's i5 SWEET! Furthermore the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the same hardware that the 2020 XPS 13 (9300) uses and still again with an i7 is beaten by macOS and Core i5!

Yeah we're going to see much better REAL world numbers than what Geekbench is going to tell us.

OK, here are the preliminary scores for my 10th Gen i5/16/512 13” Pro. Caveat: Photo index, Spotlight and FileVault might be throwing these off somewhat, as Geekbench Single Core in particular seems low.

Geekbench Single Core: 1089 (Updated 1244)
Geekbench Multi Core: 4115 (Updated 4484)
Geekbench Compure (OpenCL): 8257 (Updated 8171)
Geekbench Compute (Metal): 9341 (Updated 9563)
Cinebench R20: 1793 (Updated 1836)
Cinebench R20 Single Core:370 (Updated 417)
Cinebench MP Ratio: 4.85 (Updated 4.4)
BlackMagic Disk Speed Write: 2200MB/S (approximate) (Updated 2265)
BlackMagic Disk Speed Read: 2050MB/S (approximate) (Updated 2050)

I’ll re-run these later after Spotlight and FileVault have finished. I’m migrating from my old MacBook Pro now.

Don’t you think some have had the machine For awhile? Embargo is over, so either they stopped production or don’t see the interest to push one out quickly.

Are the speakers improved?

I just received my 10th gen 13" MBP i5/16/1TB. It's awesome. Clear bright display, nice feeling keyboard, small and compact (just the right size). The TouchBar is beautiful. The speakers sound great. I don’t understand why so many people dislike it. I'm still setting things up and will share more.

The “official” reviewers like the Verge, Engadget, etc. got their machines a week or 2 ago, but random YouTube reviewers just got them today like people like me. Of course I have a day job so I couldn’t post a YouTube review. 😊

i5/16/1 TB MPB 13". Love this thing. Returned the 2020 MBA a week ago due to overheating issues. No issues at all on the MBP with multiple youtube videos going at the same time as 10+ other apps. Beautiful screen, keyboard is great. This is a great machine.

8th gen or 10th gen ?
