My beautiful Macbook Pro arrived today and I promptly began to set it up and enjoy it. After about three hours of usage and making sure that everything was ok I decided to throw the 8 gigs of RAM in. So far so good, I've had 0 issues with it and continue to experience flawless computing.

Well, thanks to this thread, I got super excited about the upgrade at such a great price, and quickly made an order. Then I read the rest of the thread, and subsequently called to cancel the order.

I guess I'll keep my eyes open for other good memory upgrade deals.

Does anyone have experience with the memory upgrade available through MCE? When I look at their memory upgrades section, they don't show an 8GB kit, but when I ordered my OptiBay, I saw an 8GB kit was available for $179.

Anyone have experiences (good or bad) with that memory kit?

installed the ram today. i got screen flickering, random crashes, hangs on start up and it failed rember with a data mismatch error.

what a waste of time this was.

is the owc ram for 130 owc brand or just nuram?

I'm going to keep tabs on this thread. $100 for an 8gb upgrade seems pretty stellar for Parallels+Windows7(64bit)+Solidworks. Even for daily use, I think I would appreciate it. I got an i7 15" MBP over the summer and it just doesn't feel very zippy (considering what's under the hood).

Anyways, keep this thread up-to-date! I doubt the ~5 people who have responded are the only ones who bought it...

I called OWC to cancel my order due to this thread.

The gentleman on the phone told me the $99 deal is for "probably used" memory which comes with a 90-day warranty (free replacement, but NO returns after install). He said the $130 deal is for brand new memory (same brand(s)), and the new stuff comes with a lifetime warranty (again, free replacement but NO returns on previously installed RAM).

So basically, the $30 price difference gets you the same memory but the cheaper option has a 90-day replacement warranty, and the more expensive option has a lifetime replacement warranty.

so i guess the question now is g skill, muskin, or crucial. Crucial has the best reviews but only because the reviews are on their website. Newegg seems to be tied between mushkin and gskill. It seems like all these products are hit or miss as i see multiple complaints for both companies

I wouldn't hesitate with the OWC RAM IMO. Plus with their rebate they are offering it ends up being cheaper than most other brands.

I had OWC ram in my old machine and about to put 8GB into this new machine... no hesitation at all.

OWC is good stuff in my books so far.

On the other hand, I have had GSkill die on me twice in my old machine.

Just decided to hold off for now. I may re-order if I hear more good news.

$127 gets you the 8GB ram + roughly $20-30 they give you back for your stock 4GB ram makes it one of the cheapest deals around, for GOOD QUALITY RAM.

I wouldn't really worry to much. Just like the rest, lifetime warranty.

I got the G.skill 8GB 1333MHz kit at Newegg, on sale for like $89 on black friday. So far, works great, no problems with daily use or Rember.

It is nice to have 8GB, system is a lot smoother, and less disk access with 0 page outs!

But WHY would you buy this when you buy brand new ram from Newegg with a KNOWN brand, like G.Skill or Corsair for $110-$115,. and you get to KEEP your current ram?

I think the flakiness, unknow factor, and having to send them your old ram, makes this one of the WORST deals around.

No reason either way. Both good. Just saying OWC isn't unknown and has good stuff.

OWC isn't unknown... good mac branded things, such as their ssds. Why would i need my old ram? lol, you don't have to send your ram to them either... 0 problems here in either of my last two computers

Sure, OWC is great, but what they are selling here is "MAJOR brand memory". No guarantees on what exactly it is, and sounds like it might not even be new??? If they said it was OWC memory and gave specs, that would be different. So again, absoultely zero reason that I understand to take this deal, when you can buy known branded and spec'd ram from Newegg for basically the same price

Maybe, in case you ever want to restore your system to factory delivered state for warranty purposes? Or to sell on eBay for more money? Don't want the hassle?

Again, I don't see the appeal in sending my ram to them for the chance to buy some unknown MAJOR brand memory for basically the same price as I can buy new known branded money from Newegg.

But, too each his own....

Well you could still buy from them and sell it on ebay.
You don't need the original ram for warranty repairs.
Yes each to his own.
It is ram is made for macs. Hence the appeal for some. You can buy it knowing it "Will" work. (aside from manufacturer defects)

OWC sells used stuff yes... and they CLEARLY state that it's used. They don't just sell used though, they have TONS of new stuff.

I mean ram is ram, it basically runs the same. The big issue is failure. If it doesn't fail you're good to go.

As far as me, I'm not saying OWC is better, just that it's "just" as good as the other stuff.

I mailed it back today but I asked for a replacement.
I'll give them another chance.

Okay, so the general opinion sounds like, yes this is a great deal as long as you dont intend to use the product as system RAM. Great.. going to 'The Egg'....

It's perfectly good RAM hahaha... not sure why so much h8.

RAM is RAM, hard to screw it up.

When I update to 8GB this month, I'm buying whatever is cheaper... either GSkill or OWC... I don't have a preference one way or the other. Right now GSkill is $115 and OWC is $127... OWC is cheaper if I decide I wanna not keep my original 4GB... still debating... "just in case" of failure with either brand.

I personally have had GSkill fail more than OWC (never a OWC failure yet.)

The thing is though. It doesn't say anywhere on that product page that the RAM is used. One person said that someone on the phone told them that, but I'm not sure it's the case.

*SPECIAL OFFER, 90 Day OWC Fulfilled Warranty* (MAJ8566DDR3S8GP)

It says 90 day warranty, which to me means not new, as I know all OWC stuff has a lifetime warranty.

I will not argue that somewhere on that page, and rather NOTICEABLE, it should state USED RAM.

I would know that, others who order from them would know that... new-comers wouldn't. It should state used, no questions asked.

Don't take that as they just sell used though, their stuff is good.

If you are uncomfortable though, buy some GSkill from newegg... in the end, it's your call, and you have to feel good.

I ordered the OWC SSD Mercury Pro. It was a kit with the external pocket USB enclosure... I was blown away at the quality of this enclosure, it even came with it's own felt carrying case and USB cord. The drive as been great too.

Again though, when I go to order RAM, I'm one of those that pretty much goes for the deal. I ordered OWC SSD ram because IMHO it's the best out there atm for OSX that ISN'T intel (I don't like intel's slow speeds).
