I already got mine replaced due to a similar issue.

My MBP was randomly shutting down, then eventually it wouldn't even recognize that there was a battery installed. I took it to an Apple Store Genius Bar, and they happily replaced the battery. (Before this issue was known.)

no xxxxxxxxUADA?

CRAP! :(

well.. mines not that bad. yet.

edit: well actually its on been used for a month 91%

Wow. I was scrolling down the main page when this thread caught my eye...good thing it did! I qualify. And considering I have about 100 charge cycles on this thing since I got it in April I am quite glad for the new battery.

EDIT: uh oh, ok so when i clicked Place order for the replacement, it was taking forever to load so i went back and tried it again, (i did it about 3 times) and now it says that my serial number has already been used for a replacement, i guess it went through?? , and i also got 3 confirmation e-mails, i wonder if i'll get three:rolleyes: :D

Sometimes scripts can take awhile over the web. Usually it is safe to allow things to load/run for as long as they need. Safari has a built-in timeout so you don't need to worry about waiting forever.

I've yet to see IBM or Lenovo have a battery recall, they've been making laptops since 1992
They did recall half a million Thinkpad power adapters 2 years ago amid fears of things setting on fire though...

I qualified too -- new battery in 3-5 business days.

The current battery's just fine performance-wise. I have however had a few occasions where I've had to unplug and re-plug the power cable to start it charging. The amber light would come on on the connector, but the battery wouldn't actually report itself as charging.

I've also reported my MBP as being a 'whiner'. I told AppleCare that I hadn't reported it sooner, as it wasn't really bothering me, and I only wanted to report it once Apple had a solution. So, at some point in the future my MBP will be going away for a shiny new whine-free logic board. Woohoo!

I was just wondering the same thing. I just put in for my replacement, and wanted to keep the original one around for a backup. The webpage says the return shipping is provided so that the battery can be "properly recycled."

Though I doubt Apple would send an invoice of anykind for failing to return the battery, i'm affraid they could use this information against me if i were to ever need tech/AppleCare/hardware support in the future since they have my MBP serial number as part of the exchange program.

Anyone actually contact Apple to see if the return is "required" as part of the exchange program?

Since Apple doesn't make the batteries, it is likely that the manufacturer pays for it, and Apple might get exactly as many replacement batteries for free as the number of batteries returned. So if they don't get the battery back from you, it is likely to cost Apple money. In this situation, yes, I think you might get a reminder first, then a bill, then bailiffs at your door :)

I Wouldn't Want To Return That One Treblah

Post #15 Hrm, I seem to have one of the affected batteries yet I have had great performance out of it. Oh well, I'm sure a new one can't hurt.
Your Current Capacity of 5557 mAh vs 5500 mAh is higher than it was when it left the factory! If I were you, I wouldn't want to give that unit up if it hasn't given you any surprise sleep problems.

Is there any utilities or techniques that can rejuvinate batteries so they regain capacity? Or is this a case by case difference among batteries that can't be fixed? Seems like the difference among capacities for the batteries seen on page one - Posts 12, 14 & 15 - of this thread are wildly different even though they are all relatively the same age. Is there a practice that makes some batteries lose maximum capacity more rapidly htan other practices? IE Can you overdrain the battery before re-charging to cause damage to its capacity? Or under drain it before recharging it too soon?

Coconut Battery reports my 35 month old PB battery as only 59% capacity since it left the factory:

2505 max vs. 4200 originally

Did I do something wrong to make this loss happen? I've only cycled this battery 35 times in 35 months.

Treblah is doing something right to achieve max capacity above max when it left the factory. What is that you are doing Treblah?

Returning the old item is standard Apple practice (not just for batteries). They always ask for your CC details before sending out a replacement just in case you don't send the old one back.

I was all set to go to a Genius bar to find out why my battery had suddenly crapped out - Started happening on Friday - unplug from power, and about 2 minutes later, it's dead. Tried the whole re-condition thing to no success. No matter how long it was charged, it took about 2 minutes to discharge - despite reporting 99% charge the moment before it died.

Glad I could save the trip to the store.

one of my friends had the white spot issue on his powerbook and he got a new one for free, kept the old one! well, sold it on ebay....

I have the very first model number of MacBookPro and MacBookPro battery. Without question, my battery is hosed. I'm glad they started this exchange program, because I was already in a back-and-forth with Apple about it.

Basically the battery worked fine for a while, then it would shut off the computer instantly. I knew it was the battery because if the computer was hooked up through the AC adapter, it never behaved that way. Eventually, the battery would do this sooner and sooner off the AC until it was 3 minutes!

If it means anything, I participated in the Power Mac G4 MDD power supply and main fan replacement program ($20 to cover shipping costs). They intended for the return of the old parts, but I discovered that users were not required to return the original parts, so I kept them as spares. But the policy could be different for the 15" MBP Battery Exchange Program.

when i signed up for the battery exchange, they didn't ask for credit card info.

Happy PC people

Over the last couple of month Apple just continuously lowered its quality, and all the people seem to be happy, as they are getting the PC feeling
on their Delltosh computers, and the best, you can even run MS on it natively.

Tiger as it came out, was half-finished, the PRO computers making a lot of trouble, although 1000? Engineers working somewhere in the background on it, plugging in `power-efficient' chips.

Curious to see what the near future will bring. As it stands now, Apple is conveying the picture of the time when the barbarian tribes moved into ancient Rome.

I was going to happily apply for this (my MacBook Pro battery has all the required serial numbers), even though I haven't had any problems with it (yet), when I noticed that my country isn't listed on the Country dropdown menu.

...WTF?

I hope this will mean a little more battery life for me (as I qualify). I'm often lucky to get 2 hours out of my battery, though I've gotten as much as 2hrs45mins with low intensity and the lowest brightness setting...

Replaced Battery

Makes alot of sense. I had my battery replaced 2 weeks ago due to it's inability to hold a charge. Seems like the 1st of many recalls. Still have a heat issue with MacBook Pro after service. They should just give us all new ones :D

My white MacBook too!!!

Since yesterday my Macbook (just plain white, not Pro) doesn't totally charge its battery (it stays at 96% aprox) and has shut down four times!
I had it for three months and haven't had any problem at all until yesterday.

Recent changes: boot camp, and some apps, but none of them was active...
It has crashed while using Front Row, opening Word, idle, and web surfing.

What would you do?

Juan

Yeah funny. I noticed on Friday that my comp was just dying 5 minutes after running on the battery. I have been having other issues with it, so I was curious as to what it was. I was away from it all weekend. But the problem was still here.

Its nice to check macrumors and see the battery exchange program already offered. Good timing as mine just died.
