I got it! I know why there is a notch!
  • Apple has to keep the Ambient light sensor/TruTone sensor and with a thinner bezel, there is no space left for this sensor
  • Apple has to include the iMac 1080p webcam as well, and when you make the display bezel thinner, there is no room left for the webcam, hence the "notch."
There you go folks!

They don’t have to keep TrueTone as far as I’m concerned. One of the first things I turn off.

So people are more interested in having big bezels? In this case it really appears that we could have gotten the older design with big bezels or this new design with the notch. Folks that don't like the notch can likely sacrifice the space and have a big virtual bezel like the old design.

The notch even took down Macrumors. LOL

A notch, but no Face ID. No Touch Bar, but a notch instead. Sorry, I’ll be stocking up on another 13” M1 MacBook Pro with beefier specs than I now own. The notch doesn’t bother me on my iPhone XR, because it serves a purpose (Face ID). But to put one in for the hell of it? That’s stupid, but then again, so is putting back HDMI and an SD Card slot in place of a Thunderbolt port. Can’t wait to see how Apple spins this generation.

theory
It could be that the 74 pixels is a whole different area (end-to-end) for system status where the "notch" area is housed — aka the menu bar is under the notch — just like the laptops of today. The top gap won't change and will be black (OLED tech taken from the TouchBar?)

I bet Apple is going to make sure you can black out and deactivate the notch bar. So it blends with the bezel. At that point it’s no different from having a notch free dis0lay.
That would be nice, but since it's not OLED it wouldn't be perfect black. (or whatever color the real bezel is) But anyway, where's that option on my iPhone, I'd definitely set it and go back to carrying an iPhone! They've had the notch for 4 years, and if they wanted to do a blackout, they certainly had the time!

Its mini-led, if they designed it right the zones will line up perfectly with 74px.

I've really come round to the notch on a computer. It makes sense. It gives you more screen as the menu bar will be next to the notch. And personally, I never use my computer in full screen. I always have a menu bar there unless watching a video of some type and hopefully Youtube/IINA/VLC will implement a viewing solution. I doubt Netflix Amazon etc will though and that sucks. apple better implement a full screen that goes to the very top and also a sub-full screen that goes to the notch.

Except Apple will NOT give us the option to have virtual bezels, forcing everyone to deal with that notch. That’s Apple way.

Problem is, you can't ignore a design flaw like this, it's staring you in the face, constantly.
At least with the touchbar you'd focus on the screen.
