updated mine...everything was fine before and so far, still is...

i wonder if this fixes that problem with the setting where you don't want the screen to dim after a few minutes...cause even with that option not clicked, every time i restart the notebook, the screen dims and i have to check and uncheck to fix it for that session...

I installed boot camp when i first got the computer. I have since uninstalled it and [i think] i have reformatted that part of the drive (which was ntfs for windows) back to whatever max osx formats it to.

I did the firmware update, saw the scrolling band problem and fixed it using the suggestion a few pages back.

I have 4gb of ram and I believe my start up time is just under 1 minute.

I did the update and did notice the 'flicker' on grey colors until I reset the PRAM.

While we're on the topic of start-up screens and we all have the MacBook Pro LED models, I was wondering if anyone has noticed that after installing Boot Camp, it seems to take about 30 extra seconds to start up the machine-- its white for about 30 seconds before the Apple comes up.

I went into System Preferences and selected 'OSX 10.4.10' as the startup volume but it didn't seem to cut any time off of the boot time. Is it because I formatted my 'Windows' partition as DOS?

I appreciate any suggestions you guys have!

If you formatted it as FAT32, then yes. I used to have my iPod as FAT32 and it would take a lot of time for it to mount. Then I formatted it as HFS+ and it mounts in a sec. So, FAT32 is probably guilty of making your boot times slow, as the system takes a lot of time to mount it.

Why does there seem to be so many problems with the latest updates? I still haven't done 10.4.10, and now I don't plan to do this firmware.

I doubt it fixes this dimming problem because my iMac has the same problem, and this update is only for Macbook Pro's... and, specifically only 15" ones.

Just updated the firmware. The display was already great and it still is. I must admit I was getting nervous while it was installing. I know maybe I shouldn't have taken the risk. But I was to curious  , also the possible extended battery life seemed worth the risk. Now after the the update I checked the display in many angles but I can't say there is a big difference, if there is any..Anyway I'm already glad didn't ruin my great display. At least it's up to date again.

my MBP does not show any problems after the update however:

- runs hotter (under same load)
- Fans seem to go up sooner, not @ 2000 rpm stable all the time, fluctuating very much, i often see 2700rpm 4500 rpm etc.
- i Do not see any changes in idle-battery life (around 3:30), under load however battery seems to unload faster.. around 2hrs @ 40% load.

I second all the above... I was in the same situation. Everything works great now (beofre too) and cant wait to see if it really extended battery life...(charging it right now can't check)

I'm pretty certain this is to fix the issues with the 30" cinema displays (green pixel fuzz, noise) owners have been having. I made a huge deal about this, and somebody took notice. Here's to hoping...

Beautiful display before update, beautiful display afterwards. Whatever it "fixed", it probably wasn't something big, and I think you all are getting a healthy dose of the Placebo effect.

Anyone else jump out of their chair when their mactop blew a PC-speaker like beep for ~5 seconds after holding down the power button? I thought I'd killed it. Whew.

P.S. regarding the Boot Camp length: I haven't messed with boot camp before this particular laptop, but I know Macs have always taken a good few seconds to detect removable media, so it doesn't surprise me that scanning a windows partition would take about as long as investigating a bootable CD. I do know that if I leave my windows-formatted iPod plugged in (does iTunes think FAT32 is a good filesystem for this?) the system will sit at the grey screen until I take it out.

Heh, I think the beep is normal. ;)

But yes, I jumped too, before I remembered the Yonah book doing the same.

You may not be aware of it, but a lot of users (myself included) had serious flickering issues. Before SW 1.0 update it just flickered like crazy on some backgrounds. After the SW 1.0 update my screen was basically like when you view a CRT screen through a camera. Lines going up or down on darker backgrounds. So saying that this is the placebo effect is definitely not fair to the people who had a seriously annoying problem. The individual severity of the issue may have depended on some backlight factors (evenness, backlight bleeding, etc), but they definitely seem to have fixed it now. I'm just happy that I don't have to send back this unit now and risk yellow bottom or dead pixels.

LOL me too. It was a very loud surprise I wasn't ready for.

I cleared the NVRAM as others have and now the issue I was having seems to be gone as well. What a pain. I'm just glad my computer seems back to normal. I think the battery life gains don't actually net any more usable time -- I used my notebook today and got the same runtime, though initially a higher estimated runtime calculation.

Either way, I'm glad the problem is "resolved." Those lines were driving me crazy!

Updated without incident... didn't have any real issues before the update, and certainly none after...

:)

For goodness sake. This feels like a conspiratorial Kafka novel. I must be out of my mind, but there was a HUGE issue with yellowing in the bottom 3rd of LED MBP SR screens. There was a huge long thread about it saying that basically 50% of owners have suffered from this issue.

PLEASE.... please can someone just mention if this is fixed in this update?

Thank you.

The yellowing issue is/was no where near as widespread as you think... and definitely not anywhere near 50% of owners.

A thread on a forum is not an accurate representation of the total population of MBP users. People on these forums are either insane keeners, or someone looking for a solution or advice. There are millions of users who don't go on forums because they have no problems whatsoever.

Haha, no kidding right? I guess this thread might be used as proof that those without problems won't post about it? Over 100 posts and not one has mentioned the yellow 3rd, with the bulk of them seemingly saying "all good before, all good after + battery life".

Mac Book Pro firmware upgrade

Took delivery of a new Pro last week. Display was rock steady and no problems.

Performed upgrade last night.

Went like a dream....one expects no more from Cupertino...not at UK prices anyway.

Maybe problems relate to older components/firmware versions.

I didn't expected that sound either, even my wife who was in another room asked me if everything was fine. My PC also made that sound to announce the HD just died. I don't like to hear that when something is booting. I was already bit tensed with this update. Now I now this will happen with a firmware update.

my screen looks like a swimmingpool...

I also did the EFI Firmware update just to get the moving bands on my screen! It was perfect before   :(

If you turn brightness to the max you can see it better (it looks like the liquid screensaver without the fish).

It feels like I wrecked my laptop with this update.... Is this legal?! Can we do something about this?

I trusted Apple so far...

If you had read this thread you would know that you need to reset the PRAM on your computer after installing the update. That'll fix it.

Confirm 30" fix?

I'm pretty certain this is to fix the issues with the 30" cinema displays (green pixel fuzz, noise) owners have been having. I made a huge deal about this, and somebody took notice. Here's to hoping...

Can anyone confirm this? I'm holding on purchasing a 30" at the moment because of reports of noise.

FWIW, I performed the firmware update with ZERO problems.

I still cant install this update. It tells me "Your computer does not need this update"

ok so i'm installing this update and it is taking forever it seems. It's been running for about 15 minutes and the fans are at fullspeed and it is hot, is this supposed to be happening?? It sayd to not interupt but i'm thinking about trying to turn it off. It doesn't show the status bar anymore, just a white screen

Did the status bar keep creeping over? I did the update last night. There were no times when the status bar hung and the update didn't take 15 minutes but did take a little while, maybe 5 minutes. And I had a lot of heat and the fans kicking on. By the time the fans went on it was almost done.

Before the update, perfectly stable display. After the update, a definite banding that rolls up the screen. I don't notice it with apps I'm using but it's clear with my wallpaper image. I haven't reset the PRAM or whatever yet.
