maybe this info is useful for you:

got a intel gen2 160gb SSD today and installed it in my mid 2009 15" mbp... no problems so far, it runs very well and fast (efi allready 1.7 installed)

Just thought I'd contribute and say that my MBP 13" with stock HD was fine until the EFI 1.7 update. Since then, I've been having beachballing and also many random Kernel Panic's which can occur either from startup, iMovie, watching a Flash video and pretty much anything.

Let's hope Apple brings out an update soon as I really want my new MBP to be stable and work well whene doing my movie projects and programming.

How do you find the speed compared to the stock drive? Huge improvement? I'm planning to get a Macbook Pro and the 160 GB SSD.

Found A Fix

I have been having the same problems on my 13" MBP, I contacted some friends from Apple who suggested doing SMC/PRAM reset. That only temporarily fixed things. Then I installed Snow Leopard and its FIXED! 100% its UNREAL!

Is the post on the official Apple discussion board also by you, or can I count that as independent confirmation of what you're saying?

EDIT: never mind - it's you

I have read the post that WD5000BEVT-00ZAT0 is ok, but that's not for me.
I installed WD5000BEVT-00ZAT0(WD 5400rpm 500gb) in my mbp - mid 2009, 15" 2.53. But it's write&read speed is too slow to use - 0.5~4.0 mb/s by xbench, so I can't install mac os x on it.
I did SMC, PRAM reset - but nothing changed..
Should I wait for next efi firmware update? Is there no solutions?

hey guys

is it possible to summarize and list which SSD are working properly with the new EFI 1.7 ?

just got the new 13" MBP and looking for proper info is such a pain...

thanks !!!

I bought the new Crucial 128GB SSD and suffered these crazy system freezes. Has there been no comment from Apple re a solution?

So now users have to handpick the few possibly compatible hard drives out of the pool of standards-based drives that should all just work ?

I'm kind of surprised this whole EFI-1.7 issue isn't getting more attention.
In my opinion, this is a giant ****-up by Apple. Reading people's reports makes me furious and I don't even currently own one of the affected machines.

Users should riot. I can't believe Apple are seriously excusing themselves by pointing out that they don't have to support third party drives ??? Manufacturing errors and software bugs are alright as long as you explain and correct them in a proper way.

I seriously hope this will turn out to be a temporary compatibility bug or a few faulty machines that will be recalled. Even if you find a compatible drive right now, you'll have to go through the same process again every time you upgrade your drive ?!

same here. my mbp was great before the 1.7 firmware update...since then, i cant watch streaming video at all, vlc is glitchy and stalls when safari is open, and last night after reseting pram and running scripts/repairing permissions, it started making a beeping noise intermittently.

hopefully snow lep will cure my ills.....

So is it safe to say Intel G2 works even after the EFI 1.7 udpate?
Anyone can share if the 80Gb works also?

Yeah...I would like to know too!
So in general, is it safe to say that:
A MBP 13" 2.26Ghz + SSD is FASTER than MBP 13" 2.53Ghz + Stock Drive?

That would be GREAT help!!
I really want to get an SSD but kinda hesitated reading all these reports...

omg.... you mean the new Crucial M225? I am looking to get one of those!!
So this drive is not compatible with Apple?
That's a shame....the price/performance factor is so great for this drive (if I can even find one that is..lol)

Thanks all your reports and help!!!

Put me on the list of people with this problem. I get beachballs every so often on my new macbook 13" and they last around 10-20 seconds. They are definitely not normal, I have 4gb of ram with 2gb free.

Any chance this will be fixed with the resolution Apple is working on for the other Macbook pro hd problem they have publicly acknowledged?

I'm trying to decide whether to go down to the Apple store for the fix or wait it out for the firmware update or snow leopard.

Unfortunately so. These Crucials are really at the sweet spot of the market for me. With 100GB on my current hard drive I just can't go down to the 80GB Intel and I can't justify the huge cost of the 160GB. The 128GB Crucial is perfect so I was gutted they didn't work.

I'm told they work in an external enclosure so I'm going to get one and run it that way until Apple or Crucial sort this out.

eek....that's a bummer....

I mean Crucial $295 for 128GB vs Intel $229 for 80GB....
the crucial one definitely has a competitive edge on price/space.

*Sign* if that's the case, I may just get the G2 intel 80GB with better performance...(I have a home server and cloud-based storage service so I am hoping 80Gb will be fine...without bootcamp that is.).. but the Intel drives is SO HARD to find.....:(

The Intel's were recalled to fix a firmware issue but are being rolled back out now so everywhere should have them in stock soon.

yeah, but, does the Intel one work ???

because if the intel is compatible, it's worth spending a couple more $$$

Thanks for the info! I just saw one of the online retailers listed ETA 8/28. Hopefully I can get it sooner rather than later.;)

According to the posts/reviews I read, the intel seems compatible with macbook alright...but i don't know...like andothfc has mentioned, there has been some firmware issue?

andothfc, can you share more light on the problems, is the firmware issue related to macbook at all? will the updated G2 work with macbook?
Thanks!:)

anyway, we are just a couple weeks from the release of snow leopard

it might fix everything up

and by this time the X-25 postville will be widely available, prices may go down...

or if SL solves the problem, we will finally have the choice...

The issue was that if you put a BIOS password on one of these drives and then changed it or removed it, it would likely lead to data corruption (i.e. all you data could vanish off the disk.

So this was a Windows issue really.

As for whether these Intel drives are suffering the same problems with the EFI 1.7, I have seen no reports of problems yet but very few people will have these drives installed given that they were all quickly recalled.

WD 500gb 7200rpm

finally gave up and went to the apple store. they will roll back your firmware for free. my MBP is usable again!
