Ok I updated my software today to get the new iTunes update and forgot to uncheck the Firmware 1.7 update when I hit install. But... I have to say that on my MacBook Pro everything is running fine. No beachballs and slow-downs. My Seagate drive is the 320gb Momentus 7200.3 without the g-force protection. So I can confirm that with this drive the 1.7 update works fine.

You have to install 1.7 manually after it is downloaded
It would be hard to accidentally install it because it warns you
Check your utilities section for firmware update folder

I got lucky that my 13" MBP didn't come with EFI 1.7 already installed today. I just need to make sure that update stays unchecked for a bit.

You can hide it so you dont accidentally install it later. The command is in the menu somewhere. You can always show hidden updates later as well.

I've downloaded EFI 1.7 when it was released, haven't had any problems or errors. But since I'm new to MAC's I've started to think that I haven't actually installed it. How can I check my current EFI version?

Hi All,

Referring to the above Apple page, My numbers seem not to be there? I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP & this is what the two items show:

Boot ROM Version: MBP52.008E.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.42f4

The above are not in Apple's list and my Software Update comes as as "Up To Date". Can anyone shed some light or help? All I know, I keep getting beach-balls, apps quit from time to time and my trackpad & cursor seems to be out of whack? What numbers are other 17" June 2009 UMBP owner's getting?

Bazzy!

Bazzy, this 1.7 firmware update only applies to the June '09 released 13" and 15" Macbook Pros. Since you have the 17" yours is not affected/does not need the update. Hence why its not showing up in Software Update :)

Hi,

Thanks for that! I am in trouble then as I also have a ton of spinning wheels and lock ups occurring as well as multiple trackpad issues just like the many mentioned here! At least you guys with the 13" & 15" models know what is causing these problems - can anyone help give me an idea why I might be having them too when we can by default then, rule out the 1.7 firmware as the cause?

Regards,

Bazzy!

I just upgraded to a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB and no issues whatsoever. I upgraded to the EFI 1.7 firmware when I had my stock 320GB Hitachi Travelstar and had no issues either.

I got the 7200.4 without the integrated shock protection though.

Regardless, my mbp is speedier than before. :D

I have the new 15" 2.53 GHz w/ 1.7. I tried to replace the stock 250 GB with a hitachi 320 7200 rpm. When I booted off the install DVD and tried to format the drive(it had an existing partition from my last MBP), it failed saying it could not un-mount the drive to format it.

Could that be related to this firmware mickey mouse?

Question to those who are having issues with the new efi 1.7 firmware.

Did you guys flash the EFI firmware on the stock harddisk or on a 3rd party harddisk/ssd?

Cheers,
p3ncil

All the same, include the beachballs.

For some reason, Safari always freezes up and I get the beachball whenever there's an animated .gif. I can't think of anything else that could be causing this issue other than this update.

Just now, browsing another board, nothing open but 2 tabs in Safari, and I freeze as I pass down someone's avatar when scrolling.

Is there any sort of remedy?

Has anyone known of problems with these before the 1.7 update? I bought a new 15" MBP 2.8 and put in a 160Gb X25-M SSD. I've purposely not installed the 1.7 update and verified it didn't come from the factory with it installed, and I get 30 second long beachballs under heavy load (say, while Time Machine is backing up and I'm also watching video, etc).

After a out 2weeks with my Seagate 500gb drive in it was doing pretty good with minimal beach balls, which is unlike my previous MacBook. Last night I powered it on to only see a white screen with a circle and slash thru it.

I powered it off by holding down the power button. It seems fine but this is the same problems I was having on my previous MacBook.

Do we have any inside information that this is being looked at by Apple.

I take back my revelation about turning off hard drive sleeping. We rented Valkyrie tonight and the movie froze about 5 times. So damned frustrating. No idea what to do at this point. It's such an intermittent issue, that I doubt an apple store genius would be of any help.:(

oh man it works!!!

just purchased a 15" mbp. Installed wb scoprio black. Installed a fresh os x. and it works perfectly. I did all the software updates and was careful not to update to efi 1.7. However....i checked my system and under serial-ata, it shows my speed as 3 Gigabit. So I assume my mbp came with efi 1.7 preinstalled or something. But it works great for the past 2 hours haha. Will update when something comes up

this problem is happening to me too... 15" mbpro with the stock 500GB drive

beachballs for 30-60seconds when i try to start any app after coming out of sleep... rebooting takes minutes.. and also when installing new apps. Very occasionally at seemingly random times it also does it, eg while browsing

I cant believe after over a month there is nothing from Apple on this. I'll being going into the Regent Street Apple store today to see what they say

Just came across this thread when Googling.

I've had the MBP for a while but it just started happening last week, but I never thought much of it.

Like some, the ball will come up just randomly and then spin for awhile then go back to normal. The HDD is stock.

Efi 1.7

I have the 250gb hitachi drive without 1.7 firmware

Write: 57.4
Read: 52.1

I have the 13" lowend with the stock 160gb (5400rpm) disc AND the 1.7 update and I get similar read/write figures...

It's not blazingly fast by any means but doesnt stutter either.. Beachballs come now and then but usually when starting programs like idvd...

Is this really such a big problem as people are making out? Or am I just lucky? Or should the figures be much higher?

You clearly don't have the issue if you think it might not be such a big problem

I have an appointment at the genuis bar for tuesday, let's see what they say

Thanks,

My MBP did come with EFI 1.7 and it's working great with my scorpio black. No problems what so ever

I'm glad to hear you didn't have any issues becuase I plan on installing a scorpio black into my MBP 15" tomorrow when it arrives via fedex.

Any tips or tricks you can offer me? Feel free to PM me to discuss the installation process.
