I know today's firmware was released to fix another issue but has anyone tested it to see if this SATA problem is also fixed?

AGAIN

this fix has nothing to do with the problem due to the EFI 1.7

it fixes the click noise that can be heard on 7200 rpm drives only

Thanks for the histrionic response.

As I said, I was aware that the new update was aimed at another issue, I just wondered if it also had a remedial side effect on this SATA issue. I have now discovered from a more helpful source that this update will not run on systems without the Seagate drive, which answers my perfectly reasonable enquiry.

Sorry to bring this thread back but I thought I would share my experience. I have a mid-2009 15inch MBP. It came with EFI 1.7 loaded on it. With the stock drive in the computer, it works fine, but I have a 320Gb Hitachi 7200RPM drive I want to swap out which is not recognized when i try to boot from inside the MBP. I made an appointment at the Easton Apple Store in Columbus, OH. I discussed getting the firmware on my machine rolled back with the genius. He was unaware of the rollback but the genius standing next to him had heard of it. They looked it up and found it, he went to the back, burned it to a cd, and proceeded to try to roll it back on my machine. Now, I am new to Mac and am not familiar with the details of how one boots or what happens during the process but ultimately the cd he burned would not boot. When it tried it would just shutdown and restart the computer. He tried everything he could for about 45 minutes before he stated that the firmware on my laptop might be corrupt and that would call for logic board replacement. He stated call Applecare as that store is about to undergo a remodel and they don't have the tools necessary to swap the logic board in stock. I called Applecare, got the run around about not being a known issue and that I should take it to an authorized service center since the Apple store was no help. The authorized store stated all they could do is send it back to Apple which leads me to believe I am getting the runaround.

Whew, sorry for all of that. Anyway, the tech gave me the cd he burned which has 4 files on it, none of them I am familiar with. Now I'm not saying that I have the rollback tool but if someone out there would like, I'd be willing to share them. They are efiUpdater.efi, RomDowngrade.efi, Romimage.bin, and UnsupportedHW.png. As I am switching from PC to Mac, I am not familiar with what makes a bootable cd on a Mac so I don't know if the cd he burned is bootable (he said they used it on another MBP in the back and it worked), if the cd itself is bad, or if its even the right tool. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

if i am not wrong this disc should be inserted onto your mac the moment it starts up... not really sure though. I can play around with it if you are able to upload the files somewhere.

just installed my new X25 with my MBP13 EFI 1.7

it works just fine :)

i expected it to be much much faster, but it's ok

i'll probably find it faster by using it a bit longer

P3ncil,

I have them uploaded to http://rapidshare.com/files/274725726/Aluminum_Macbook_Pro_Recovery.rar

Again, I'm not sure if this is the rollback tool or not so please do not get mad if it isn't. This is what the Genius at my local Apple store burned to cd and gave to me.

If you can figure anything out about let me know!

Thanks for your prompt reply :)
gotta test it out... thanks again

Edit, I don't have my optical drive with me.
Can anyone try it?

Download the files from the rapidshare link, burn it into a disc.

Try this

1. Eject the Disc
2. Shutdown
3. Insert the disc into the computer
4. Press and hold the Power up button until you hear a beep.
5. Quickly slide in the disc.

===OR===

1. Eject the disc
2. Restart
3. Hold on to option key
4. Insert disc
5. Try booting from disc

See if the above mentioned method works.
Thanks guys.

there is no instruction about how to use the files...

try this.
no guarantees.

The poster of the rapidshare link needs to create a cd ISO image, not just copy the files to a directory in a RAR. The cd boot sector information etc is missing, causing it to be obviously unbootable.

It looks promising, but an ISO image of the CD would be the way to test it properly, forget RAR!

Those are the files that the Genius at the Apple store burned to a CD. As I stated in my earlier post I am not sure the cd he burned is bootable. He gave it to me and tried to shoo me out of the store. I asked him to try it before I left and we spent the next 45 minutes trying to get it to work. It does nothing when I try to boot from it. And I'm new to Macs so I don't know how to make it bootable. With Windows, there are start up files that need to be added. If someone out there does know it would help. I've just learned how to make a disk image so I will post it.

Has anybody with the bachball problem on EFI 1.7 upgraded to Snow Leopard and did it somehow "magically" fix it?
