I care about my loved ones. I'm surprised to find someone who doesn't. I'm not worried about terrorists since they don't roam around here and are hardly likely to. But I just found out someone I used to work for is in danger of losing her foot because of a drunk driver. My brother's receptionist is a widow because of a drunk driver. I worry more about the likely threats, not the rare threats.

You're an idiot. Of course if I had a choice between helping someone who's dying and a computer, I'd choose the person... however, nobody's dying so I'll worry about the computer. You're argument is irrelevant to this thread, don't get uppity about it. I'm sorry you've lost loved ones but, we're talking about computers here.... don't try and spring guilt trips on us because of your bad personal experiences. Case closed.

I have this same argument with my Spanish girlfriend.

We don't consider "America" a continent. There is North America and there is South America: two separate continents. The former is comprised of the United States of America, Mexico, Canada, and what we call "Central America." South America is everything south and east of Panama - starting with Columbia and comprising the rest of that landmass.

I know that my girlfriend was taught that the entire landmass is one continent. Like you, she hates the term "American." She says "United Statesian." It's cute, trust me.

As for the guy with the first comment, do you say that you're visiting "the States" (as many people say)? Are you visiting all of them? Why would you say that then? ;P

That's what I call them. United Statesians. Ja your girl friends cool. I never really understood that north south divide just like I don't understand how Europe is a continent. Its a mass of land that is connected to Asia.Their one massive landscape. The only thing that seperates them is their respecive cultures.Ah well.

I didn't know these people that well, so they're not really my bad experiences. Was just addressing iWoot's comments about the threat of terrorism and compared it with other threats, as he was addressing my comment that the cost of a laptop shouldn't cause people to get upset to the point of wishing ill on others.

The issue is that some have claimed that the MacBook Pro screen is far inferior to other manufacturer's laptop screens, and I asked for evidence. If presented well, I'd believe it (if it compared a well-done photo of another laptop's screen and a poor photo of an MBP screen, then I might not believe it of course). I didn't believe the MacBook Pro screen was inferior to the PowerBook G4 screen, yet my own tests showed I was wrong, though the difference was very slight, and to my eyes, other factors outweighed it.

You tried going all philosophical and started on a mind trip on how a LCD on a laptop is so insignificant in the "grand scheme of things", I countered by pointing out that even our individual lives, and indeed even the existence of our species is insignificant in the "grand scheme of things" from a much wider perspective.

The issue is that some have claimed that the MacBook Pro screen is far inferior to other manufacturer's laptop screens, and I asked for evidence.

Who are you?

What right do you have to ask for evidence?

Why does anyone here need to pass through you and have your approval first before expressing any unhappiness with Apple's products? You got a good machine, this thread has nothing to do with you, stop trolling. Lest you think otherwise, it is not our responsibility to see to it that you are assured your own machine is not affected.

Blah blah blah.

So it is all subjective, mkay?

What "other factors" are you talking about? Unless you can present evidence of how these other factors outweigh the flaws, I refuse to believe that the MBP's screen is as good if not better than the PBG4s.

The ability to bump backlighting up to torch mode is worthless to me considering colour rendition sucks, viewing angle sucks, and the screen has jpeg artifacts all over it.

Hey Mr Moderator.
Where is this thread going...other than down hill.
I am relying on this forum for feedback on a serious problem but it has turned into a bit of a flaming war on anything but the original subject.
This is important guys and gals...can we get back on track...please.:D

My 17' went back friday after waiting 8 days for a FedEx label:confused:
(Ritz Camera got me return label in 15 minutes!)
Looking like after Christmas for my replacement from engineering.
Original order went in November 10th.

Sad.

Sorry to hear, but the good news from some earlier posts indicate that Apple at least knows about the problem.

You indicate that you are from Maui, is that outside of the US?

True; my apologies. I'll take iWoot's last advice.

Well, I really think it is unlikely that so many posters on the forum would make up a story with the intent of slinging turd at Apple. Some lucky people might have gotten good displays, but for these lucky people to require evidence from the unlucky people before accepting their claims as valid is actually very insulting, considering that the grains do not get picked up by cameras.

Sometimes I think it is;)
But no we are part of the State of Hawaii.
It is very impactful especially reagarding shipping stuff.
But well worth the price to live in Paradise......:D

Well, technically there is water separating the landmasses (the Panama Canal), right? I think the argument in your second point is much stronger - that there is no Europe and no Asia but rather one landmass.

Has anyone outside of United States contacted support and gotten the thumbs up from Applecare with regards to this issue?

What do you mean thumbs up? I got mine replaced because of the screen, the replacement was even crappier so I asked for a refund.

Update

Update: The Apple Store captured my 15" MacBook Pro C2D yesterday but not for the screen issues. They offered a replacement and I asked if I could have it replaced with a 17". They did and I am typing on the 17 now. I didn't really realize how grainy the display was on the 15 until I got on this 17. The 17's screen is very nice with little grain. Hoping I don't have to spend any more time at the genius bar soon.

I'm sitting here with all three MacBook Pros side by side at the same angle and on the same web page which is Apple's opening page. My wifes 2.16 Core Duo also has a 9C60 as well and is glossy. The two glossys are brighter and the whites are whiter. The so called grain if that is what it really is is about the same on all of them. So I prefer the glossy screen. I assume you mean just the screen when you are asking which computer I prefer.

The same happened to me, but the more I use the 17" the more I see that the right side is brighter than the left. Not terribly, but I will have it replaced at one point. How is yours in terms of illumination evenness?

It's a great computer otherwise though! Enjoy!

Mine seems fine. No bleeding I can see and it seems very even as far as illumination. Only been on it a few hours so more to come.

I agree it is great otherwise and the screen is considerably different that my 15 c2d

Call AppleCare ASAP, I had mine classified as a DOA. If it's too late, then you could email sjobs@apple.com. I did that, and was offered much better customer service, though I wasn't as lucky as some to be upgraded to a 17" :(

When I first called they wanted me to see if the graininess would also project onto an external monitor... so definitely call! They told me that the engineers would want my model...

Any updates on this in the last two weeks?

I'd like to buy a Macbook Pro, and am waiting until after Macworld...but would like to know if the screens are fixed b4 buying one.

Macscoop.com had a story saying that Apple haulted production on the MBPs: LINK

Just wondering if Apple has fixed the problem yet.

Cheers!

to add to my last post...

I was in an Apple Store this weekend to look at the Macbook Pro and the only thing that bugged me was the screen. It looked very dark and the colors were horrible and grainy.

Definitely not as nice as a bunch of PC notebooks...

Well, I did your guys LCD test etc and mine is awesome. I don't see any grany its all clear.

I wonder if yours is better b/c it's newer?

I've been looking at a bunch of laptops this past month and most of the screens on the PCs (HP, Sony, Asus, etc) are pretty damn nice! All bright, all crisp...all display great colours. I'm a lifelong PC user but I really want to make the switch to Apple, so I'm definitely going to buy a MBP. However, when taking a MBP out for a test run in an Apple Store...the screen was horrible. Comparing it to the PCs, it isn't even in the same league...it's just THAT bad!

Have you been to an Apple Store to compare your screen with the others? Has anyone else done the comparison?

Wow, too bad it is impossible to capture the details on a screen with a digital camera. Else a picture from you can probably convince me to either ditch my present one on eBay to buy a new one, or stay put.

I went to our local Apple store (UK) about a week before Christmas to look at the MBP screen, mainly because of this thread. I compared the screens on:

15" MBP
17" iMac
20" iMac
20" ACD
23" ACD

They all looked the same, to be honest. If you looked really closely you could see some very slight graininess on all the screens, but not really any different to any other desktop or laptop LCD screen I've ever seen. I also looked at the test gradients from the LCD quality thread on the 15" MBP (both in Safari and by saving the images and using them as desktop backgrounds) and didn't see any banding in the gradients.

Maybe the 15" you saw had a good screen. Comparing the affected 15" to the 17" has a huge noticeable difference. It is huge.
