^^the grains are ok for you? Maybe my computer is granier than others, but as I type this i am not even looking at the screen because it hurts my eyes so much. I am not exaggerating this issue at all--the words are going out of focus, and my eyes are EXTREMELY strained. sorry if this post is repetitve of my one above... this just REALLY sucks

If its really that bad, I would take it back and ask for a glossy one, as its obviously not right. Oh and if your anywhere else but the UK, refuse to pay the restocking fee, as its obviously un-useable if you cant even look at the screen. Thats terrible.

Ive onlyjust realised when this thread was started, but its not a huge issue for me. I didnt even notice it before it was mentioned.

^^i have a glossy screen as of now... and i live in california. No way in ****ing hell am i paying a restocking fee. This is pathetic

alright, thanks man. To continue with the topic, I am now unable to look at this screen anymore. Words go out of focus because my eyes are so strained, and my eyes are beggning to hurt pretty badly. On top of this, my spacebar makes an incredibly annoying squeacking sound whenever it is pressed. I feel like i am going crazy. This sucks so much

Well that's certainly not "within specs" in anyone's book - I'd take it back for a replacement, since you just got it - sure quicker than waiting for repair. (The only new notebook I found to be defective upon arrival was a TiBook, that came with a faulty logic board - since the rest of the 'Book had no problems, and the screen had no stuck/dead pixels, I opted for repair vs. replacement, because I'm paranoid of pixel problems with LCD screens!)

Could you post some pics of your screen? Your screen sounds like the worst I've heard of .... sorry, dude!

:(

EDIT: I just saw your post about going crosseyed from using this. Yes, this completely happens to me. Id send the computer in for just a screen replacement, but my comp has frozen 3 time already (keep in mind, ive only used it since 5 oclock today for probably 4 hours total time) and the spacebar squeak is making me tweak out.

The solution should be quite simple. Instead of crying seas full of tears you should take immediate action. Take it in to the nearest Apple Store and show them the issue you are having with your newly purchased computer. If this is out of specifications they will act upon it.

You will be met with much higher success there than going on and on about it on some website. While you are at the store, please compare the floor models to your particular unit and tell us if they are any different.

No issue with my 15" MBP's screen

Your solid colors look perfectly solid with no shimmering or anything of the like? I'm not sure if the iBook has issues with that but I know the powerbooks are clear as day, at least the ones I've seen. Do you happen to have an external monitor you can hook your MBP up to by any chance? That would be the best way to compare it.

I have not hooked MBP with my ACD yet as ACDs have been already hooked up with my other 2 PBs. I changed the wall paper (more even colored wall paper like the nice blue one, as Aqua Blue wall paper has some shading near the bottom part which gives you a false sense of "uneven" screen brightness). But, I have not noticed anything grainy on my 15" MBP screen.
I watched a few sections of Star Wars Episode III to see the movie quality on the screen and I have not noticed abnormalities with screen.
I am watching the MSN news site now and it has the clean white background for the news copy. Everything with this screen seems normal to me.

crying seas full of tears? Sorry if my complaints regarding my computer's screan have irked you in some way, but jesus dude--I think i have a right to complain since i have such problems with my computer after having gotten it under 12 hours ago. Clearly for some reason you have taken some sort of offense to my complaints; Im not sure why, but thanks for the great advice man! Shoot, I thought for sure if I posted enough times the screen would fix itself! How would anyone know to call apple if their computer was shipped defective  ? For a company that promotes such ease of use, they sure do have a confusing way of resolving customers issues! Thank you, you pioneer of problem solving; I owe you a cold brew for your genius. Hell, make it a pitcher of beer. Three cheers for common sense!

Im not a moron--I have every intent of getting this computer exchanged for a new one. I cant deal with this screen. Apple's hotline is not in business hours right now, and neither are their stores--my posts started at 12AM, well past the time that any of my complaints could have been voiced to apple directly. First thing I do tomorrow when I get free time will be calling up apple to see about an exchange. So, uh, posting on a message board is my only way of venting right now. And I'll cry my sea full of tears until I can call apple and get this crap sorted out.

I have a question:

So when my C2D MBP arrives on saturday, and I take it out of the box, if this is a problem for me, what're my options? (My order is custom - basically stock 2.16 except with a glossy screen) Could I still return it without paying a restocking fee? Does 14 days apply at all? And could I get a Macbook instead (this problem doesnt affect the Macbook line, correct?) This is really a shame that it's happening on such expensive laptops.

Hi again everybody! Well, I called Apple technical support (Netherlands) today, and the guy told me he was not aware of the problem and I was the first one to report it...then he told me to ry some kind of resets of the motherboard (like taking out the battery and disconnect the plug and push the start button for 5 seconds...) but then nothing changed and the final decision was that I will go to an Apple center and let them see...Then I called the Apple center and they also told me I am the first to report the problem...so apparently I'm one of the first people to have a MBP C2D in the Netherlands and one of the first with a crappy screen either  ! But it's definitely hurting my eyes so I will try to get a replacement and hope they are not all the same!
I'll let you know, cheers!

Not all of us live near an Apple Store, sir. The closest one to me is 1200 miles (2000 km), or a 20+ hour drive/3 hour flight.

This might be down to a faulty Inverter IC, if its what I think it is you dont have to have your eye an inch from the screen to see it.
If you are right up at the screen and see a problem your being anal ;) .
ITS NOT THE LCD PANEL. sorry had to make this clear :)

This might be down to a faulty Inverter IC,

You mean it could be a problem of frequency? Because the eyes straining that I feel could be comparable to the one I have when I set the frequency of my PC monitor on something too high or too low...But on my MBP I cannot change it! Well, if this is the problem it could be solvable, no?

just for fun, because it's getting tense :)

They got it right on this bit of marketing propaganda.

"See more colours... where they are not supposed to be!!"

I don't have a grain. I could see the difference between the simulated and the Powerbook G4.

If you don't have a grain then it is good, but the effect is simulated.

Anyway for a more dramatic demo of the grain (or really colour shifts) just sit back and push the display back as well.

Whole bands of shimmery....

Gotta call "********" on this one. Earlier, all the threads talked about how the "9C60" was the better screen, now this thread says the opposite.

Your screen may be defective, but mine is flawless - no "graininess," no "uneven lighting," no "dark areas," nothing. Just an incredibly bright, brilliant, glossy screen.

Too bad about yours though......

:p

iBorg

Its a better screen in regards to back lighting...you have to note that the threads were about back lighting as well. Even so, there were a few negative posts about the uneven lighting. this is the grainy thread, hence grainy issues are divulged here.

but please work on your attitude, as i'm sure other people here find it annoying. This is a thread for people who have problems want to fix them and dont need someone perched on their back telling them repeatedly that his mbp is golden and doesnt need to do anything about it.

anyways, we have to send a petition to apple so they can upload a firmware fix if that's the issue.

Hi,
my machine suffers from grain too. Noticed it from the moment I pressed the on button, I'm not suffering eye strain but its definitely hard to focus on, everything in my peripheral vision seems to be really distracting and I feel myself going slightly cross eyed. A solution would be great, I don't really want to send it back as I'll be without a computer then (this replaced an old laptop which won't run properly anymore). I also have a very saggy keyboard but that is another matter.

EDIT: Could someone tell me who is in charge here? I want my proper user name, it was registered in 05 but has never been used. Hopefully someone might be able to close the account so I could use it. Thanks

Is your machine glossy or matt?

If you are within your returns period it is best to try and get a replacement (you might get fortunate like iBorg and get a replacement). I'm beyond my 2 weeks now with all the dilly dallying and trying to fix/calibrate this **** and guess my only option will be to get a repair when Apple addresses this issue, if it is hardware related.

Its a matte, I'm not a fan of glossy. Thats a good point, thanks, I've had it for a week today so I should get a move on. I may take it to the Regent Street shop this weekend. Its one of those weird problems where they could just deny the whole thing and say I'm imagining it etc.
Great, my spacebar has literally just now developed that squeak. I best get her checked out.

MacBook Pro Grainy Screen

Well, I just received my 2.33Ghz C2D Matte Screen today from Mac Mall that I had overnighted. I previously owned a 17" CD MacBook Pro, but I sold as soon as I heard that the C2D processors were coming out.

As I waited for the C2D to "mature" a little, I researched and found all of the threads about the various problems. The one that scared me the most was the grainy screen as I do lots of Photoshop work.

I have seen first hand the bad end of the "grainy" spectrum on a 2.33Ghz C2D laptop on display in a Comp USA here in Long Island, NY. Sitting right next to it was a 2.16Ghz C2D that looked great however. So, I made up my mind that it would be "pot luck" as to which screen I got.

So the good news is my new MBP C2D 2.33ghz screen looks great. There is a VERY minute amount of grain, but I'm confident that if I never came to these forums, I would have never noticed it. I showed the screen to my brother who is also an avid Mac user and had no knowledge of the grain issue, and he said the screen looks great. "Very bright and crisp" were his exact words.

My machine is a week 44 baby and has the infamous 00009C60 Model screen.

I must also say that the dark shadowing is very minimal on it as well.

I think it's just going to be a case of good or bad luck. I agree though that this should NOT be the case on a $2500 piece of gear.

Good luck to all in their MBP C2D acquisition endeavors.
