It's the "9C60," which others have claimed is the better available screen option.

As far as "viewing angle" problems, as with any LCD screen, you get the best view/color/brightness looking straight-dead on - that's the nature of the beast! But since I'm not sharing the view with others (if I'm doing a presentation, I use a projector connection), I don't see any shift, etc., unless I move over 30 degrees or so to one side or the other. For myself, that means that on airlines, I don't have to worry about the dude next to me taking a peek!

Seriously, I otherwise have no uneven lighting, graininess or dark areas in this screen - I couldn't be happier with this baby! If, has been suggested, ol' Steve gave me his "prototype," then ..... so be it!

:D :D :D

Meh... the way you describe it, I guess yours is no better than mine

Well, "the way I describe it" is the nature of any LCD screen - my iMac, my Dell display, and every notebook I've had (Dell, Gateway, PowerBook, and Acer, as well as cheaper iBooks!) This MBP screen is the best I've ever owned!

If this isn't an ideal LCD screen, then what you want is a 3mm thick CRT notebook. Good luck!

My MBP has none of the legitimate complaints listed throughout these threads: uneven lighting, dark areas, "graininess," etc.

:p

A post in Versiontracker.com stated that his C2D MBP wouldn't accept the firmware udpate - it's apparently for the Yonah MBP?

iBorg

Yep, the ones for C2D will have two digits after the decimal, so I hear. Looks like I've not been wasting my time reading these forums after all ;)

neilpryde , eh ;) where do you live ? What gear you have ?
Sorry for off topic ahaha

I notice the problem is more pronounced in windows than it is in os x. I think the colours in windows just make it easier to pick out the grains... Very annoying.... kinda like putting a haze in front of everything.

FWIW, my C2D MBP (week 44 build/9C60 glossy screen) looks like the Powerbook side of the image posted. The MBP side of the image looks like it has slight horizontal lines in it..my screen doesn't do that. I also compared my screen to my 12" PB 1.5, and they both exhibit a slight speckly effect. My Dell 2005fwp also looks slightly speckly when examined up close. I'm not sure if all LCDs do this, or it's an unacceptable problem.

If your screen is grainy, and you looked at that PowerBook vs MBP screenshot comparison, you'd see no difference between the two halves. I know people are saying that you will, but I really don't think so.

Everyone else, like me, looks at the screenshots like the ones you posted and doesn't see a difference.

Now, I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement, and from what you describe the graininess you see (I don't see anything) could be corrected with a firmware update. I'm also not a Mac apologist (I work primarily with PCs). But coming from the PC world, my new MacBook Pro C2D probably has the

See above. The best people for evaluating whether they have this problem or not are people who either have an external LCD, or have an iMac or another computer to compare it to. I think any test like this that's actually being done on a C2D MBP on its own is too subjective.

However, I do believe you when you complain about the graininess, so good luck with "the fight."

Psychosis or eyes destroying device?!?

Hi everybody,

I just got my MBP C2D last friday and, before starting to read about all these problems I was really happy with my fancy, bright glossy screen...Then I realized actually I also have slightly less bright "strip" just over the dock...and actually my eyes and my head are much more tired when using this screen then my old iBook...! Is it my imagination and will I adapt to it or should I do something? Is this a psychosys or is this screen destroying my eyes  ???

Cheers,

Jacopo!

Perhaps a bit of both?

Yep, I also think that! I'd definitely like to think that I'll adapt to the new screen and it will be fine...but I read other people are having the same problem...and since I bought the Pro because I want to actually "work" on it, if I can't watch the screen is a bit difficult...:D !

It's not a matter of you really not thinking so, but the fact is that when you view the comparison image on a MBP, you can still see a difference. I'm viewing it on mine, and many others have done the same. As for viewing it on an external LCD, that's the best way to evaluate it like you said, but from what I've seen on the iMacs, the panel itself is also plagued with the sparklies/noise/grain.

if you tilt back a matte laptop screen that doesnt have the grain problem, you can easily see the difference between the two images. the grain is really noticeable, and i can only hope that i dont see it on my MBP when it comes on satuday... :(

THE SCREENSHOT IS FAKE. Just mocked up to explain what they are seeing, it's not an actual screengrab.

Seems like a lot of confusion here. I'd imagine you'd see the difference between the two halves on any screen.

Ok, reading all these posts I decided that this grainy thing and the view angle (or the "different colour line" just abve the dock) are actually bothering me and my eyes are really suffering, so I decided to ask to change the MacBook pro sigh...! But it's just a matter of calling the Apple and tell them about the problem? They will just change it? I guess they are aware of the problem by now with all this mess...!

From the sounds of this thread, it seems the problem is endemic to all MBP's. You could possibly end up getting a new machine with the same problem.

Actually this issue has been around since the CD MBPs, so I doubt it will help. What you can do is try to get them to repair SPECIFICALLY with a different LCD.

if this display issue has been around since core duo why is everyone making such a big deal out of it now??? was it cause there was so many things to complain about with core duo macbook pro's that the display issues weren't brought up as much?

Ehi, I checked with a PB G4 of my roommate and actually the screen seems really the same, except that with the glossy, brighter screen the thing is more evident...I think you are right about the endemic problem...I think I'll call Apple(NL) to know if they are aware of the problem and to know "what if" they admit is a general problem...otherwise I'll keep my MBP and I will just get used to it and try to forget about this paranoic thing...;)

If you do call Apple, please let us know how it goes and what they tell you.

No grainy problem with my MBP's LCD

Finally back to my place and I looked at my 15" MBP. So far, I have not seen any abnormality with the screen. Because of this thread, I looked very closely. I looked MBPs screen side to side with my iBook and I found no grainy issues with the screen.

Your solid colors look perfectly solid with no shimmering or anything of the like? I'm not sure if the iBook has issues with that but I know the powerbooks are clear as day, at least the ones I've seen. Do you happen to have an external monitor you can hook your MBP up to by any chance? That would be the best way to compare it.

My stock, 15" 2.16, 1 gig ram, 120 gb hd C2D MBP has no grainy display at all. I have a matte display, and I can see from the comparison photos on the first page. The left one looks way messed up, while the right looks normal. However, there's no problem like that on mine whatsoever. The whole screen is actually very nice, no dark spots anywhere. So maybe not all of them are scrwed up. Cheers! :D
