A recent article in a UK Mac magazine (MacUser I think) explained some of the techniques used by Apple to keep something a secret.

You only discuss products with members of your team
Report anyone who discusses something with you who is not on your team
A security team whose job is to maintain this level of secretivity
Very strict contracts with supplying companies
Past employees of Apple don't even talk as inevitably they end up working with Apple if they stay in the industry

and others... it was interesting reading.

I found that article particularly interesting too :) Amazing the lengths they go to... pays off though!

I just noticed apple wants $700 US dollars to upgrade to 4 gigs of RAM, 2x2 where you can get the same memory for <100 and install it yourself.

Good testiment as to how overpriced the MBP line currently is.

re: MBP overpriced

That's not really a great example, though, because Mac RAM upgrades are overpriced like that across their entire product line. They like to charge big markups on larger capacity hard drives too, whether you're buying for a Mac Pro, an iMac or a Macbook Pro.

Honestly, I've always thought the Macbook Pro is one of their systems that's difficult to price-shop against other notebooks. (EG. If you believe PC Magazine, the current MBP outperforms practically every other notebook they ever tested in running Windows Vista. Technically, it's been pointed out that "fastest Windows laptop ever" is a lie, because they once tested a "gaming laptop" that was faster. Only thing is, that laptop was around $4,000.)

How much of a "price premium" should there be for a notebook that performs so well? How much for the fact it has an all aluminum case, backlit keyboard, or superior "mag-safe" AC adapter design? Don't forget it has an iSight camera built-in too (typically something not included in other notebooks on the market).

I think the best argument for the MBP being "overpriced" is comparing it to the regular Macbook. Then you're at least comparing two machines that both include and legally run OS X, both with mag-safe adapters and integrated cameras. But really, if it wasn't for Apple coming out with the last couple revisions of Macbooks - I'm not so sure the MBP would look "overpriced' at all?

All good points listed, but regardless of the benchmark, I'm sure a current 3k machine will beat the pants off of the macbook they tested several mohths ago.

I agree its still a good value considering it IS a Mac and all, but basing old hardware on current market prices is a bit steep. If the upgrade happens to come tomorrow, then the 3k pricetag will be justified and a great value. But as it stands, the current hardware is not priced properly.

Especially the ram upgrades ;). But at least that remains user servicable. I'm hoping they allow hard disk upgrades to be non-waranty-voiding in the future.

When i get a new MBP I want to get Vista so I can run Halo 2. Does anyone know how to get it free? $200 is steep, when the only reason I need it over XP is Halo 2.
