How come so secret?

There is no point in waiting anymore. You guys all said it will release at MACWORLD which was Jan 15th. Its now Feb 21st and there is still nothing. I just bought one last night as well and it is a monster. It makes me feel safer to know that this won't have any issues.. but I am pretty sure the Penryn will have A LOT OF ISSUES since the rev1 hasn't even been out yet!

I should never have found this forum... I would have had a new MBP in November!. But what I want to know is - how is this secret being kept so well? There is a factory (in China) building these things, shipping companies shipping them, not to mention component suppliers, marketing specialists and product designers... Surely, someone blabs about what they know (not rumours, facts!), but yet not. Most new cars are well known via spy shots and 'confidential sources' long before launch, so what gives with Apple and computers? How is the secret maintained so well? Fair play to SJ for running an organisation so tight-lipped, but I really don't get how. Suppose I will wait for another Tuesday, but that's it then (or is it?)...:confused:

Seems like Dell, Alienware, Lenovo, Gateway just starting to integrate their computers with Penryn processors.

I guess Apple will be the next one? We do hope so. Penryn processors can sit on Santa Rosa platform, maybe Apple will just give an optional upgrade to Penryn processors. Just like Dell / Alienware. I guess most of us are waiting for the new MBP is due to the multi-touch trackpad, right??? If Macbook Air is still using the same trackpad, I guess the decision of getting one MBP now is not as tough as it seems to be.
My country does not offer BTO systems. I went to an authorized reseller store on the 14th, one of the worker said that some update on Macbook Pro is likely to come up in 2 weeks, means next week. Even the MBP demo set has been missing more quite some time. Not sure if this fact can be trusted but pray hard for the coming Tuesday...

Why is this chip not in the MBA?

apple's wrath if you break their NDA. really in most businesses eyes, it's not worth it.

despite saying that, i am still going with my prediction of a redesigned mbp, and 17/18th release date

Have faith: they will come. Tuesday 26th is when I think everything will happen (gut rumblings, not insider knowledge), including SDK for iPhone. It's the big bang before the end of the month and coincidentally the last Tuesday before March.

You are right - Apple does a good job at keeping it secret. But I doubt the employees at the factories know much about changes to the production run for new builds or even much about the finished product once it has been assembled, let alone have easy access to free, uncensored internet access to tell us all about it. Most people who work for Apple in the US/elsewhere either know about as much as we do, and those few privvy to the knowledge like their jobs too much to leak anything. Just look at what happened to Think Secret...

Here in Portugal, there were no shortage of mbp, at apple store or retail shops.
Only now at Fnac (one of biggest apple retail stores), there getting the mbp with pre-installed Leopard !!!.

So i think if they want to finish old stock first it will be still sometime until the new release of mbp comes out. But hope with all this extra time, they will upgrade cpu, mem , HD, more usb ports, GPU.

A complete re-design really dont care, love it how it is now, but hate the mba design.

There are three reasons I can think of to put stuff on sale:

1.- Your stock is not selling well.
2.- They are going to release a new model.
3.- Customers THINK they are going to release a new model and thus your stock is not selling well.

I think that what we have here is a combination of the three. Probably the MBP sales are falling because the product is getting older compared to the hardware that is already out there. It is likely, but not sure, that for this reason, Apple wants to upgrade it. And definitely, people (including resellers with no direct connection to Apple) think they are going to release a new one soon, so many professionals that are informed, are waiting until it is released, feeding into point 1 again.

And yet, Apple might not release anything at all and the previous argument would still hold true. After all, Apple has no competence. Does not matter if Sony or Dell or any other brand releases more powerful (spec-wise) cheaper computers. We are all here because we like Mac computers. We all now that we can get a PC with a similar processor, better GPU, bigger HD, blu-ray, etc. for less or similar money, but it is not a Mac. It won't run OS X, it won't give you the sensation that it's solid and stable, etc.

Seams like I'm not the only portugese being in the Macrumors forums.

Ok, about the Mbp, let's considerate a few things...

1. As far as we know the Mbp update should be out in Macworld 2008, and it was not because of a Penryn issue (because they went to hot or because they weren't shipped in mass). Whatever was the reason, it can't stand up anymore since other companies are having penryn chips in their laptops.

2. If an update has to happend soon because a lot of stores are out of Mbp, it stills unsure that it will be realized the 26th. Because as far as I know this event is just a rumor. Possibly it will never happend. There's no other clues, no invitations sended, no other information since the first time this event was first predicted.

3. If the Mbp update will happend, then it must happend with a magnetic latch, black backlight keyboard, be thinner... Why? Because Apple must keep a logical line design. Mba is a "like pro" laptop, it was made for the pros (to travel and so). Therefor the Mbp must keep approximatly the same design. Otherwise we will have 3 distingued laptop categories which won't happend, I guess. Will Mba stand alone within its category?

4. Macrumors has not announced yet, but there's an event tonight, at Apple Store Soho. Maroon 5 will play open set at 7Pm (NYC). We never know if they will anounce something. If after the 26th nothing is announced then the Mbp update should be forgot. Although, from what I heard, Montevina platform will not be seen in Pro laptops (because they will have a intel graphics media accelaration in it), so the Penryn update could be out anytime during the year.

Dunno if this means anything but the UK refurb store is relatively littered with MBPs. Usually there's only 3/4 (I check quite a bit :p), currently there's 10 or more. Just seems unusual.

It just means that their quality control department is non existent and a lot of people have returned faulty/damaged stock like the one I received on Tuesday!

i wonder if apple is waiting to bump the graphics to 9600GT? This would be a nice little upgrade to justify not doing a redesign.

Did you notice US store imac refurbs have "Special Limited Time Price" in red? I have never seen that before. I would imagine a new imac is coming and they are clearing those out for some reason. or 2 they couldnt sell them for their current price.

2005 according to the Buyer's Guide (just looked for the October release date)

Bought Mine Oct 28th, 2005 - Knowing MBP was around the corner, but i was hesitant to think the rush to intel was going to be very quick at all and I needed to run Adobe apps. Boy was I wrong. While Adobe did take forever, rosetta would have been fine and i probably wouldn't be buying a new computer soon.

I've posted a few times about my delay on the MacBook Pro I ordered on Feb. 15. JUST shipped the end of the day yesterday....finally. I'm excited to get it, but I sure was hoping for the newest revision...

Fri Feb 29th

My prediction is Friday, Feb 29th for the mbp update. Apple loves marketing and marketing loves Apple, so I think they'll put some spin on the fact that Feb 29th only comes around every four years.

Everyone start looking for a fortune teller...
See what he/she will predict the date of the release of MBP...
Then we can share all the dates together...

Make sure that the fortune teller himself is not one of the victim of the MBP wait... :D

Any news on the people that were waiting for the online apple store to ship MBPs to them??

Are they still waiting??

Still waiting here, the campus store says its still being built and might ship either today or on Monday.

Please - a black or white plastic MPB !

Though I am not religious I will pray that the next MPB has a plastic case option. like my trusty 3 year old iBook that I have not updated because aluminum, while pretty, is very fragile. I know from experience, because my aluminum G4 could not put up with the banging around of my constant worldwide business travel and the screen gave out. The iBook has been banged and dropped many times with no problems ! But, it's getting old and I have to update - so please - MPB with .5 TB HD and 4 GB RAM in plastic 15 " ! Yes I like the regular MB & MBA , but my eyes hurt after several hours on a 13.3" screen which is why I will not buy the current MB or MBA !

From what I've read on these forums, the price will most likely remain the same (I could be wrong on this one). I'm just holding out for the update because I know the Canadian price will drop considerably due to the exchange rate (priced a Mac Pro before and after the most recent update, and the difference between CDN and USD was much smaller).

thats not what i've read- Amazon has already dropped its price by $150

Pulled the trigger this week. No matter what, as others have said here before, the technology works, is proven to work and being that I'm outside of the US for work, I can't just ship them back whenever I feel like it.

2.6, 15", 200GB and ordered 4GB of ram from NewEgg.com

Good times ahead and it should be ready between the 26-28th and at my home of record by the 29th, which means if they update it next Tuesday, 26th, then I may get a surprise but I really don't care either ways.

I just can't wait to get off this pos windoze notebook my friend's letting me borrow. But I do miss my old 12" PB...

It seems that there is agood business opportunity to for some good Mac Papparazzis out there.
Some of you guys are professional photographers/graphic designers, use all that talent in a Mac Papparazzi magazine, and make most of the MacRumors Members MBP lovers happy.

A recent article in a UK Mac magazine (MacUser I think) explained some of the techniques used by Apple to keep something a secret.

You only discuss products with members of your team
Report anyone who discusses something with you who is not on your team
A security team whose job is to maintain this level of secretivity
Very strict contracts with supplying companies
Past employees of Apple don't even talk as inevitably they end up working with Apple if they stay in the industry

and others... it was interesting reading.
