My 2011 15" is still inching ever closer to being a decade young. As ever it remains to be somewhat unpredictable; just when I thought the battery was totally done & dusted, it recovered from a lowly 64% to a rather healthy 85% in the last few weeks for reasons completely unknown. Even the OS now reports the battery as Good, for the first time in many a year 😆 Well for the time being 😎

I've near decoded the Cold Start up sequence now; once the display finally blackens it means the MBP is good to go, admittedly once up and running the 2011 remains to be fairly potent. The MBP still maintains reasonable operating temperatures and seems un-phased by high loads pushing it way too close to three figures Centigrade for comfort, then again it's a 15" 2011 😱

MacBook Pro 8.2 100% stock barring being opened for the occasional cleaning of the cooling system, once every 9 years or so 😆 This one hasn't even seen a clean install since it left the factory, what an unexpected Trooper LOL...

Considering a base M1 Air so I can evaluate Apple's silicon and what I can get it to do for work purpose, equally the 2011 15" will remain as it just gets on with what I want it to do.

Air would just be a platform to learn & test, with the eye more on the likes of a 16" as they switch to Apple's own silicon and get a generation under the belt.

Folded I want to see what the new M1 Mac's can do and if they can be of use to me professionally. Only realistic answer is to get one. So just picked up a base 13" M1 MBP and I'll see what it can do, if I can get it to do what I need I'll be set for the 16" as that roles out, of course COVID also needs to be gone and normal business resume first and foremost.

As for the 2011 15" it's still soldiering on although it's been struggling to perform an update courtesy of Apple. Kind of just tend to turn away and leave it be to get on with it, either the lights will be on or off for good.

I wanted a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel 10th gen chips, that I expected to launch in Nov 2020 like the original 16-inch in 2019. Unfortunately, the Apple Silicon craze has made everything unpredictable, so I had to cave in too.

For now, bought the higher of the two Air models in Gold because my 13" 2010 MBP (Core2Duo) is too slow and unsupported. My new Air arrives next week :)

I went with the MBP as I'm uncertain of the load and the active cooling seems to be the more prudent approach. Still very early days so a lot of SW has to fall in line, equally the Intel Mac's are EOL as the performance with M1 is astonishing as is the battery life. Once Apple expands it's silicon to the 16" and the other desktops, things will only switch up ever more.

Unless there's a specific need for Intel it's best avoided now on the Mac.
