I can't justify buying a macbook pro but I really want one. I bought imac 5k last year and I use ipad mini. I use lte data a lot and ipad mini is good for that .. unless macbook pros have sim slot, i can't buy it

Ok, so you rather had a non significant update in April ?

It would have helped maintain interest, make the machines better value and given a big hint that new models weren't coming for at least several months... I mean, the Air got a RAM bump, which probably helped keep it selling, but I don't think anybody would be crying into their beer if a Retina MacBook Air appeared in October (and a new thinner, lighter rMBP 13 would pretty much be the end of the Air unless it was really expensive).

The USB-C is what worries me about this otherwise great MacBook Pro update. If it only has USB-C, no less than five standards (MagSafe, USB-A, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt 2, SD card slot) are being dropped all at once. Many people (myself included) who use these Macs aren't ready for that yet.

You will get a hub for an extra fee. We all know that is the way Apple will work it. Question is whether or not they will be designing one of their own.

Which still raises the question: how does that differ from the standard F-keys.
(Granted, OSX and OSX software is horrible at properly using them)

Function-wise maybe none, but visual wise, if you could put your own icon on the F keys instead of the current printed OS oriented ones it would be nice user-centric upgrade. 100% customized in function and visual for every app. Mail could show different icons than Photoshop or FCP, or whatever. Keep the OS ones in certain apps or not. It would just depend on what works best for the user.

:D

Have you just awoken from a rather long coma?

You think most Windows laptops that have been released this year have a DVD drive, removable battery and easily upgradeable RAM?

You might want to double check that..

Most Windows laptop, excluding ultra books (aka MacBook Air clone), have either spining hard drive that can be easily replaced and have RAM that is upgradable.

I purchased a Acer laptop this year, it have DVD drive, 5200rmp hdd and 4GB RAM.

You might want to check local bestbuy or computer store.

Exactly. It's why I went ahead and bought a new one last month as I'm not quite ready to give up so many ports.

Yes. Huge deal breaker there. I could handle that on a consumer machine or even a iMac -- which can be used professionally if well configured. It's a non-starter on a pro portable. Slimmer but fewer on-board ports is "less is more" but not in a good way. It's more to keep up with, more hassle when traveling, more messy cables around a confined work space as laptops often have.

If you commute is confined to Point A home to Point B office then you can have a set of dongles at each location and have a half-assed, but, potentially expensive workaround. But if you travel even modestly it's just a PITA to have to tote along extra cables or anything. I try to pack as light and tight as I can and you can only bring so much though a regulation sized roll-a-board or backpack.

So I'd have to take a pass if the MBP was port configured like the MB. To me extra ports is one of the signature features that differentiates the MB from the MBP.

Certainly not rich. I just always manage to sell my previous devices for a lot so I don't end up buying them all at the full price, if that makes any sense.

Yup. That is what I try to do. My MBP is going on 4 years though because updates have been so anemic I haven't been motivated to trade up. But the great think about most Apple products is that the do retain decent resale value if you sell them w/i 2 years of release date. Plus Macs are discounted a lot more than previously.

Dongles is one thing, but usb c 's bandwidth is limited to 10Gbps - so this would be a set back from thunderbolt 2 - 20Gbps, when PC's are now using thunderbolt 3 - 40Gbps.. this would severely gimp the mbp line..

I wifi tether my MBP to my cell phone. Not sure why I want a SIM card in my laptop when I've got the cell phone. Why give my phone carrier another $15/month for a device share?

USB type C is not USB protocol exclusively. Think of type C as the connector type, whereas TB is a protocol. You can have TB type C ports.

USB-C doesn't dictate the speed. USB-C is just the connectivity standard for the plug.

USB-C has the capability of supporting up to USB-3.1 standard. But likewise, can still support USB-2 and USB-3 standards as well

USB-3.1 is only 10GB/s, but, the USB-C port can also support Thunderbolt 3. allowing for the one port to handle both the 10gbps USB-3.1 and Thunderbolt 3, so moving to USB-C will have the added bonus of ThunderBolt 3... as long as Apple supports it.

Using a touchscreen on an OS designed for a mouse and keyboard is a step backwards in usability, not forward.

I am really happy Apple didn't cater to the users who like gimmicky features.
So good they ignore a good portion who prefers touch screens. GoT it

Depends what is meant by significant update, and we're not going to know for a couple of months.

Newer cpu, better screen, gpu, better storage options, longer battery life = good update.

Thinner, fewer ports, crappy MB keyboard = bad update.

OLED strip = interesting, just don't screw up the core functionality.

I won't be getting a hub for an extra fee. If they lock it down to 1-2 USB-C ports, I'll get getting an MSI GS60 (or more likely a GTX1070m version later in the year).

They're not ignoring those users. Go use an iPP, Timmy says it's a better computer anyway and it has a touch-based OS.

The rest of us who prefer a trackpad or mouse will continue to use computers in a form factor for and with an OS built around them.

I'm sure they'll tout the OLED TouchBar as the pro feature that differentiates it from the rest of the lineup.

I don't see it trickling down.

People are so dumbed down they need to point at stuff and say "Daahh!"
It's hard to find eloquent users sometimes.
Lmao. I really hope you don't use an iPhone because that same logic can apply to iOS especially more so

Ai was reporting this morning that more than likely this new unit won't be launched at the same event as the iPhone 7, but I don't think I buy that. Fall hardware launches are always timed side by side with OSX update launches. El Capitan released 5 days after the 6S last year, and Mavericks was similarly timed with the 6. Considering how little of an update the 7 is going to be, why would Apple not use that stage time to launch that, the new MBP and maybe an Apple Watch update? What's more, why risk the ire of Apple faithful by pushing the refresh back even further than they already have? Finally, if this update is going to be as huge as this article states, it's going to get a stage event. Why waste money holding a second event 3 weeks to a month later?
No, it's more likely the new MBP will be announced at the same event, launching at a time that coincides with Sierra's release.

Please look up AMD's new Polaris based platform. the RX480 just launched on the desktop side. if it's any indication of AMD's direction, low power, lower heat and better price to performance is likely the norm for their GPU side.

they're not competiting with Nvidia right now on the high end. even the 1060 is a higher class gpu than the 480. But the 480 is a $199, VR ready (performance is on par with the 390x) GPU, but with a much lower power requirement and heat generation.

what you're saying was true back in the 290x hawaii era, where they were mini space heaters (My 290x is ridiculous with how much heat it pumps out)
Shouldn't Apple, as a supposedly 'premium' brand, be more concerned with the high-end GPU space???

Seriously, I am so sick of seeing all of these low end GPU's in supposedly 'high end' computers. The 5K iMac being powered by a GPU with 2GB VRAM is a complete and total joke.

Dear god Apple, please switch to Nvidia some day in my lifetime. A lot of us professional users are dying here for a mac with a non-wimpy GPU.

As it stands, I've had to build Linux based machines with high end Nvidia Tesla & Titan cards and just root in to them via SSH if I want to work primarily in OS X, which I love. I don't expect Apple to start producing gigantic black boxes with spare PCIe slots, but give us something to work with.

And if you point me in the direction of some HP/Lenovo all-in-one with a Titan -- well, I'd bet my bottom tooth that'd be a lemon within 6 months' worth of heavy usage.

Heh. Now that would be some of that "innovation" Apple keeps droning on about but fails to deliver lately. I'd certainly be impressed if they could squeeze a Titan-level GPU into one of their unnecessarily thin desktops! But who knows? Maybe they are working on something like that somewhere at Apple, but somehow I doubt it; watch bands and emoticons seem to be the order of the day instead. :(
