The 14" will be my first Mac. I am wondering how much useable free space is left on a 512 GB model before installing applications. I'll be installing MS Office and Final Cult Pro? How many GB is just macOS? I'm not sure if I should buy the 512 GB or get the 1 TB.
My 500GB SSD in my Mini still has plenty of free space after Office and Affinity suite, though I don’t have Final Cut. If you do video projects, you should be able to estimate the space you need for such project as your bare minimum and go from there. For Office documents, I use OneDrive so I can safely free up my internal space without losing those documents.

Is this trolling?

What's anemic about a chip with a single-core Geekbench score of 1700+? The M1 is Apple's entry-level chip.

I mean, if you prefer Windows and PCs and Intel or AMD processors, fine. Is dealing in reality too hard for some?
Powerful to you may be anemic to others - I sent a maxed M1 mini back within a day.

When I decided to go with 16GB RAM and a 512 SSD for my MacBook Pro in 2014, it was so that Future Me could read this news item and proclaim, in a self-satisfied way, “Seven years old and STILL CURRENT, BABY!”

And then when opening Mail causes my fan to spin up to 7000rpm, I just stick my AirPods Pro in my ears and I’m like, “ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION, BABY!”

Happy to hear that difference between 14" and 16" will be narrowed. Hopefully that means they're bringing the 16" price down and not pulling up the 14" price LOL!

Now the dilemma I have, do I get a RAM upgrade or go for 16". In terms of resale value, in a few years time, do we think buyers will appreciate the extra ram?

With the market for Macs, there will always be someone who will. Working Macs will almost assuredly sell.

Was that your use case?

Are you a power user who grabbed a M1 just because it was new and made bold claims? Those M1 laptops replaced the truly anemic Intel entry-level ones...and they're worlds better. The M1 Mac mini replaced the entry-level Intel silver ones...no comparison.

If you are a serious pro and power user, and you had a previous Mini running 32 gb or more, then those upgrades weren't for your use-case. If you've never had any laptop/desktop/all-in-one over 16 gb and/or you're not running heavy-duty CAD and 3-D modeling software...or you're not an enthusiast gamer, what are we ultimately debating?

I know exactly what I am buying thanks, but wanted to see on certain apps how it would perform and guage what the M1X would be like.

It is others on this site who talk up the M1 to be something amazing, not me.

Will see how the M1X performs, and based on my tests, if the GPU is double the M1, then it should be good.

Yeah, Australian pricing is a b*tch.
yes it is.

However the instant tax write off certainly helps.

Having looked at other manufacturers, I dont believe Apple are charging that much more for upgrades than Dell., HP and Lenovo for similar pro computers.

Waiting with horror to see how much it will cost to upgrade to 32gb and 1TB/2TB SSD!
I'm thinking $400 for the RAM (32->64).
Plus, $200 for 1TB (from 512GB) and another $400 for 2TB (total of $600 from 512GB -> 2TB).

I'm hoping to get 5+ years, so I'm thinking 64GB and at least 1TB (probably 2TB).

I'm guessing $2099 for the base model (give or take $100).

I think there will be more than one processor/GPU configuration available.
Although, I guess this could be the new marketing model: 'This is the chip and this is a fast as we can make it go, so here you go'!

Edit for additional comment: I'm not sure how much the new screens will affect the price.

The new MacBook Pros won’t have:
  • a HDMI port
  • an SD card slot
  • Ethernet in the charging brick
  • a Touch Bar

The iMacs ethernet brick works because the plug isn't MagSafe and therefore the magnets are strong. Not sure its a good idea for data to use an easily separated plug.

lost me at Mini LED display. urgh, why is Apple wasting time with these trash displays?

anyway 16GB/512GB is good but i need to see the price of 32GB/2-4TB cause anything less is a downgrade for me.

I am very pleased with the speed of our new M1 MacBook Air. It is faster than the i9 MacBook Pro I bought a year or so ago and cost $1,000 less. Looking forward to what the new Apple Silicon based laptop lineup will bring. They really are game changing laptops.

Apple bout to UNLEASH a monster

The new MacBooks are one of the most highly anticipated products of the 2021
I am trying to think back to an MacBook Pro event where I was not disappointed after anticipating for something amazing…

I was so happy when watching the event unveiling the MacBook Pro 2018 with the redesigns, new technology, i9 CPU etc. etc. then…I bought one..

I said enough…

That's really easy to predict, given that Apple charges $200 to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB RAM. If 16GB will be standard, the upgrade to 32GB will likely be $400.

We already know what Apple charges for storage upgrades as well. It will likely be $200 to upgrade storage from 512GB to 1TB, and $600 to upgrade from 512GB to 2TB.

With the MacBook-centric Apple event now set for Monday, October 18, leakers are beginning to share a few new details that we haven't previously heard about the machines.

M1X-MBP-Feature.jpg

According to Dylandkt, the base 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will feature 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage space, which is in line with the current high-end 13 and 16-inch MacBook Pro options.

As he has said previously, the new MacBook Pro models are also expected to feature an upgraded 1080p webcam, and the M1X chip will have the same configuration in both sizes with 10-core CPU.

Dylandkt claims Apple will provide a new charging brick, which is not a surprise since the upcoming machines are rumored to feature a new MagSafe charging port, which would necessitate new charging hardware.

The MacBook Pro models will feature mini-LED displays and smaller bezels with no bottom logo, which we have heard before, and pricing is expected to be similar between the two different sizes. The pricing gap between the 14 and 16-inch options will be "much more narrow" than the current 13 and 16-inch high-end MacBook Pro options.

Display analyst Ross Young earlier today said that the new MacBook Pro models could feature a 120Hz refresh rate for the mini-LED displays, and Dylandkt claims that 120Hz was "being tested on a Mac prototype" earlier in the year, but that he has "no clue when it's coming."

Full details on the new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will be announced next Monday, and until then, we have a roundup of all of the rumors we've heard so far available in our MacBook Pro guide.

First time since 2016 I’m excited about a MPB. The 2016 model made me switch to Dell. Let’s just hope they’ll include my beloved SD card reader.

These are all sounding too good to be true. It’s so very tempting but my 16” MacBook Pro is still plenty fast. I just wish it didn’t cook my balls off and lasted longer. That’s my biggest problem. But I think I’m going to try to hold out until the M2X. Now I’d this thing ends up jumping straight to the M2X with insane performance, well, then I will be extremely conflicted. Maybe that’s what the hyperspace jump refers to? Going straight to the next gen and in the extreme way of an X variant would merit such graphic packages. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised. The M1 is already a year old.
