Now that iMac and MacBook Pro newly offer it, I can only presume the nano-texture display will come to iPad mini in time (I'm guessing the recently released iPad mini refresh had its feature-set locked at some point before Apple finished testing/decided to offer nano-texture option on iPad Pro).

iPad mini with a nano-texture display would be a better Kindle Colorsoft than Kindle Colorsoft.

If you do visual creative work the Nano-texture display is a no go. The display casts a blurry fog on all your content. It's not important or very noticeable for the average user, but sharpness details are lost a bit on fine detail/text. If the client asks why something is blurry, you won't be able to see what they are talking about because everything is fuzzy on your end. This isnt like the matte displays they offered in 2017.

For consuming content the nano-texture is great.

Edit - my review on Nano texture is for the Studio Displays. Maybe they are doing laptops differently? But it sounds like same technique.
A quick search helped me find this video by Marques Brownlee about the M4 ipad pro. He seems to say the same as you. He advises to "be very careful" if considering ordering nano texture, as it affects sharpness, contrast and the appearance of blacks (direct link to where he shows the nano texture screen on the ipad pro):

I still dont get the idea of loving matte or nano texture as it kills the contrast ratio and no advantages over glossy displays in many ways.
Nano is hyped up name for Matte Screen. Obviously being offered at a $$$, it offers a little bit more refined experience than raw Matte.

This throws us back to 2006-2010: we had even the same laptops offered in gloss and matte, matte being a slightly premium version. But then manufacturers switched to glossy, because it is easier to increase contrast without going overboard like Apple did for much cheaper. Then we had a decade of glossy only laptops.

The reality is with my matte 720P dell i could spend 20hrs a day for 7 days and no eye strain. With Macs (i am using them since 2013) I always struggle to work more than 8 hrs on it.

TLDR: If you have money, Nano is better for health. Health can not be bought for $$$. Matte is superior option for health safet - US Coke does come with corn syrup not because it is better, but because the cane sugar and beetle sugar is much more expensive. US french fries come with 24 ingredients not because they are tastier than European ones which have only 5, but because of cost cutting measures without giving .02 cents about people's health.

how would nano texture improve my health?

Apple knows matte is better. They just needed to find a way to charge more for it.

Once they figure out how to charge for DC dimming, disabling temporal dithering, and disabling jelly scrolling, then we'll be talking!

Basic phone $999. Phone with a good display that's easy on the eyes $1499.

Edit: BTW, I should add that this nano texture stuff did absolutely nothing for me with the iPad Air. The display was still unusable mostly likely due to temporal dithering. So until all those issues are fixed, this nano texture stuff is a useless gimmick. There is a marginal reduction in glare but it's still nothing like the matte screen on my Dynabook laptop equipped with an eyesafe display which is practically glare-free.

Don't forget charging for PWM free (or less) screens. Currently, 74% of devices are better than ipad pro in terms of PWM.

In 2010s i was using 720P dell matte screen. It was washed out but was really easy on the eye. Since then i upgraded to retina macs and all of that, so probably would be hard to go back to the same feeling.

Glossy - color pop but reflective as a mirror.
Nano - washed out colors but easier on the eyes.
Thanks. I canceled my order and placed a new one with the nano texture. Silver M4 Max 64GB is coming 😍

I will be able to tell if this right in a few days. Very similr stuff happened between the Samsung S95C and S95D TV.

As a 14“ M4 Nano user for some weeks, I‘d say that the «washed out» effect is there but not a massive factor in real life, except when you do video and need blackest blacks and most intensive colors. For Design it is actually a bit closer to the actual printing result (and I still wonder why Apple screens cannot HW-calibrate :-/)

I wonder if nano coat will be available at places like Bestbuy? I know bhp will stock them, but they are not always the best price. If nano is not available (like 16gb of ram cto/bto options of the past) then it might sway the majority of sales directly to apple and we would not see regular bestbuy/amazon discounts.

I'm curious about the durability. I know the nano coating on the Pro Display XDR / Studio display are known to be quite fragile

Will a speck of dust on your keyboard still be enough to crack the screen glass still? 🤔
if only that is a booger that were dropped in the AM onto the keyboard and the person tried to close the lid by the evening when that thing became hard as rock.

I don't know what this is but I want it. Ready to throw my old m3 pro with its shabby screen into the trash.
